How To Paint Galvanized Steel Roofing Panels
Metal roofing panels are often made of galvanized steel because it is resistant to water damage and is highly durable to impact. Although you can leave the steel panels unpainted, many people choose to paint them a color that complements the remaining exterior of the structure. Painting a galvanized steel panel roof is not all that different from painting other metal objects, but you must ensure that the surface is perfectly clean before beginning the application process.
Wait until a day when no rain is expected and the temperature is cool. Place a ladder next to the structure and climb up it to access the roof.
Sweep off the roof using a broom to remove all pine straw, leaves and surface dirt.
Identify rusty areas or flaking paint and sand them with a handheld oscillating tool with sanding accessory and medium-grit sandpaper until the surface is smooth to the touch.
Fill a bucket with 2 gallons of water and 1/2 cup of trisodium phosphate . Scrub the surface of the metal roof panels with the mixture, using a long-handled scrub brush to loosen stuck-on debris.
Attach a long garden hose to a pressure washer and carry the pressure washer up to the roof. Backpack washers work best for this because your hands remain free. Hold the nozzle 12 inches away from the metal roof panels and spray them thoroughly to remove mildew or other stains.
Allow the roof to dry thoroughly, which may take one to two hours or overnight.

Can You Paint Corrugated Galvanized Steel
You cant really paint on galvanized steel, whether corrugated or not. The paint doesnt adhere well to the metal surface because of the zinc layer after the galvanization process.
The zinc doesnt only reduce corrosion but also rejects paint. However, using white vinegar to clean the roof and adding a primer coat may help with this.
Best Paint For Galvanized Metal Roof
Corrugated metal roofs are made from galvanized metal. If youve ever attempted to paint a galvanized metal surface before, you know that paint doesnt adhere well. During the galvanization process, zinc is layered on the metal to reduce corrosion, which can have the adverse effect of shedding paint.
Next, were going to use a primer that will allow us to safely apply whatever paint we prefer on top. But were taking things a step further by also using a high-adhesion protective enamel as our final topcoat.
Ive used quite a few of these products, but once again, my favorite is a Rust-Oleum. This time its the Rust-Oleum High-Performance Protective Enamel. Its corrosion-resistant and extremely durable, helping to protect your metal roof from natures wrath.
To help aid with the prevention of rust, this formula is rust-preventative. It also looks incredible and has great coverage, but its really the long-lasting durability that earns it the win from me.

A Aluminum Exposed To The Elements For Less Than Six Months
1. Prepare panels that need painting by cleaning with a common household laundry detergent. This would be a mild detergent such as Gain or Tide. After cleaning the panels, they should be rinsed completely with clean water. Panels should then be left to air dry.
2. Apply a cold water and phosphoric acid mixture to prepare the aluminum surfaces to accept and cling to paint. A pre-mixed solution of this type can be found in most paint stores under the name Aluma-Prep made by Amchem. The manufacturers instructions, found on the label, should be carefully followed when a commercial pre-treatment is used. A second option to buying the commercial pre-treatment is to prepare your own solution using the following ingredients and portions:
18% phosphoric acid 22% water 25% isopropyl alcohol 35% butyl alcohol
3. Apply the mixture above onto the aluminum panels with a cloth or brush. Do not allow the solution to dry. After approximately three to five minutes the panels should be rinsed off completely with clear water.
CAUTION: When using any acidic mixture, such as the one described above, precautions must be taken to shields skin, eyes, face, and any other exposed parts of the body. Be sure to wear protective clothing such as safety goggles and rubber gloves.
4. When aluminum panels are completely dry a coat of any good metal primer may be applied. Aluminum paints that are made for metal are outstanding when used as primers.

Can You Paint Over A Rusted Metal Roof
The obvious first question is: can you paint over a rusted metal roof? It would be extremely convenient if all you had to do was slap a new coat of paint onto that aging, corroded old roof.
Well, you can but its going to take a few more steps than just painting it and calling it a day. Before we can even think about painting, were going to have to do something about that rust.
First, we need to remove as much of that rust as possible. Next, we need to prevent the corrosion from continuing to expand.
To take care of the first step, removing the rust, were going to need to physically attack the rust and remove as much of it as possible by force.
For halting the rust in its tracks and ensuring that it wont continue to eat through our new coating and degrade the existing metal any further, were going to use a special primer with a rust killer built-in. Once coated with the rust killer, the oxidation will no longer be able to grow and weaken your roof.

Field Painting Unpainted Galvanized Steel
Unpainted galvanized steel panels may need to be painted after being placed in the field. This may be done by using the steps below:
1. The panels may have accumulated white rust that will need to be removed before painting. If this rust is light it may be removed without too much loss of the zinc coating on the galvanized steel panel. Removing heavier white rust will probably need a more intense treatment which usually results in some loss of the galvanized coating. White rust is a type of oxidation and will involve some scraping to remove a heavy layer. The abrasion may be done by motorized equipment or chemical scouring.
Removing light rust from a galvanized steel panel before painting can usually be done by scrubbing the panel with household cleaner. Products such as Bon-Ami or Ajax will usually work on the white rust oxidation and the panel should be restored to the original finish of the galvanized coating.
As mentioned above, heavier white rust will need a stronger treatment to remove the oxidation. Of the numerous products that claim to do the job, two have actually been tested by a manufacturer of galvanized steel and discovered to be successful in removing heavier white rust residue.
Remove Rust From A Metal Roof
Removing the rust from your metal roof is going to take some physical work. To do this, there are two major methods you could employ.
The first method is going to utilize chemicals to attempt to neutralize the rust and weaken it so that you can then remove it with a scrub brush.
For the second method, youll need to employ the help of a pressure washer.
Before attempting either method, ensure that youve removed the largest flakes of rust from your roof with a dry scrub brush.
Method 1: Trisodium Phosphate
A word of caution: be careful when using trisodium phosphate. Its a harsh chemical thats very effective at what it does, but you dont want to get it on your skin, clothes, eyes, or anywhere else. Make sure to wear rubber gloves and clothes that youre concerned with getting destroyed, just in case.
Youll need to dilute the trisodium phosphate before applying it. It comes in a powdered form but will need to be mixed with water at a ratio of one cup trisodium phosphate to one gallon of water.
Once mixed, youll need to apply it to any rusty areas using a sprayer. Give it a good 15 minutes to penetrate the rust and start working. Then, using a hard-bristled scrub brush, scrub all of the rust and remove as much of the staining as possible.
Method 2: Pressure Washer
Youll need a pressure washer to make this work, and it needs to reach at least 2500 PSI if you want to remove the rust from your metal roof.

Preparing A Metal Roof For Paint
The success and longevity of the paint on the metal roof will come down to the level of preparation that is done on the surface before you paint. We are focusing here on painting a bare metal roof, but if you have a previously painted metal roof, you may need to remove the old paint with a paint stripper before continuing. If the old paint on the roof is in reasonable condition and not flaking off, you may be able to leave it on and paint over it.
The roof must be thoroughly cleaned and inspected for additional preparation that needs to be done. Start by spraying the roof down by using your pressure washer or your garden hose with a sprayer. This will wash all the dirt away so you can get a clear picture of the condition of the roof.
If there are some rust spots, they need to be cleaned before laying down the primer and paint. This is where the scraper comes in. use the scraper to scrape away any stubborn dirt as well as any surface rust.
If the rust is more than superficial, pour some vinegar on the rust spots and let the vinegar soak into the rust for a minute or two, and then use the scraper to remove the rust. It should come off fairly easily.
Wash the roof again and allow at least an hour for the roof to before moving on to the primer.
