Diy As Much As You Can

Are there certain finishes in your home youd love to have, but you cant afford? Its time to watch some videos and give it a try yourself. Going the DIY route can save you money, especially when it comes to things like painting or laying flooring.

But not all work that you DIY will be a money saver. If you dont know how to do some of the big jobs, like plumbing or electrical, it may cost you more to have someone fix your mistakes down the road.

Exterior House Design Example

Our house combines just two basic roof types, gable roofs and shed roofs. The main roof is a 14:12 gable roof. At the front of the house is a bump out which is covered with a 4:12 shed roof. Just to the right of this large bump out is a very small bump out for a kitchen area window seat. The roof over this bump out is a sideways extension of the 4:12 shed roof over the large bump out beside it. On the upper half story, protruding from the main gable roof, is another gable roof which forms a 14:12 gable dormer. At the back of the house a 4:12 shed roof dormer which protrudes from the roof making room for the stairwell and the bathroom on the upper half story. Next to the front door, a very small bump out is covered with another 4:12 shed roof. Another bump out on the opposite side of the house is also covered with a 4:12 shed roof.

This house shape definitely includes several small extra roofs but it was not too complicated to frame all of this. There is nothing in this design that would have experienced framers scratching their heads.

Your bubble diagrams will need to morph into firmer lines with defined interior and exterior walls. These lines will either define or be defined by the final house shape. By allowing the bubble lines to roughly define the house shape, you may end up with a fairly complex house. There are a few possible approaches here:

Stick The Bottom Part Of The Underlayment To The Roof Of The House

Install the second course just like the first, using the guidelines on the underlayment to get the correct overlap. When an ice dam forms on a roof , ice and water can work their way up under the shingles and leak back into the house. Also, strong winds can blow rainwater under shingles. Self-stick roofing underlayment can prevent this because it sticks to the roof decking to seal out water. It also seals around nails, which keeps water from leaking through nail holes.

Rolls of self-stick underlayment have a plastic backing so the material won’t stick to itself. The backing is separated down the middle. Line up the lower edge of the roll with the outside of the drip edge. Peel back part of the uppermost backing on the roll, and nail the top corner of the underlayment to the decking. Start pulling the roll across the decking using the backing, making sure the material is lying as flat and as straight as possible as you pull.

You’ll be able to roll out long sections at a time if you have a low-pitched roof, but the underlayment may slip off the eaves on steeper roofs, so roll out no more than 10 ft. there . It’s important to make sure all your underlayment lies flat before you fasten it to the decking. Ripples and lumps can telegraph through the shingles and may be noticeable from the ground.

Before you Google how to shingle a roof, check out these six reasons why you shouldnt DIY your new roof.

Installing The New Roof

  • Roof valleys are sensitive spots susceptible to leaks, so install secure flashing on all valleys.
  • Also, install flashing on the roofs peak, and cut the excess off. Use your self-stick underlayment to cover the cut edges.
  • Install your started shingles on the bottom and work your way up. These will start 1/2 inch overlapping the drip edge and gutters.
  • Use your roofing nailer to install your asphalt shingles, row by row, overlapping every single row. Make sure to install them running over the edge of the row, never short. Cut off the excess when you are finished using your hook blade tool.
  • Install step and dormer flashing around your chimney, skylights, and other structures on the roof.
  • Install your vent flashing and install your shingles over the flashing for a flush look.
  • If needed, cut the holes for your attic vents.
  • Cap the ridge/peak of the roof by installing your shingles perpendicular to the shingles on each side.
  • Lastly, seal all of your exposed nails and edges with your sealant.
  • Clean up the roof and safely get down.

Why Do I Need A Licensed Contractor

As we said above, only a licensed contractor can apply for a building permit. So if you dont have a licensed contractor, you wont be getting a building permit for roof replacement. That could be a big problem if a building inspector happens to notice your work. If an inspector sees that you are doing work without the required permit, they can order all work to stop until you get a permit. If your roof is torn up and has not been fully replaced, stopping work could leave you and your home unprotected. You or your contractor could also face a fine for performing work without a permit. In the worst case, you could be ordered to remove any work that was done without the necessary permit for roof replacement. In other words, you could be required to completely rip up your brand new roof.

    Do Your Own Roof Replacement

Roof replacement requires no special skills and can be done by anyone with the proper tools, materials, and guidance. Roofing materials are designed to last an average of 40 years. All roofs will eventually become worn and weathered and will need to be repaired in part or replaced completely.

There are several types of roofing material including wood, asphalt, slate, and metal. This article will focus on the installation of asphalt roof shingles.

    Step 1 – Work Safely

Working on a pitched roof might take a little getting used to. All that is required to maintain secure footing is 2×4 lumber that is 4 or 5 feet in length. Lay a 2×4 board flat and horizontal onto the roof a few feet below where youll be working.

Drive a #16 nail through each end of the 2×4, through the shingles and most importantly, into the edge of a rafter. Use the 2×4 as a cleat to keep you from sliding down the roof. Pull it up and re-nail it in place as you work your way up and across the roof.

Step 2 – Remove Worn and Damaged Shingles

Using your hammer claw and a utility knife, remove all damaged or worn shingles, all the nails, and the felt roofing paper from the plywood sheathing in the area to be re-shingled.

    Step 3 – Get Started

    Do You Really Need Permits

Can you do your own electrics? Or build a porch?

Many DIYers who take on home improvement projects are unaware of the building permits required by their city or town. This is a costly misstep and one to be avoided.

Its in your best interest to obtain these permits. Now, there are roofers who choose not to obtain the required permits when roofing a home, but they do so at their own risk. If a city inspector stops to check your permit onsite, he or she can immediately put your roofing project to an abrupt halt until a permit is issued. If this happens after youve removed your old roof, then youll have to scramble to find a way to protect your home from rain and cold or hot temperatures until you get a permit.

Also, replacing your roof without a permit is a building code violation. This could affect your warranty or even make it void. It could make the property non-transferable to a new buyer. In other words, building without a permit can prevent you from selling your home in the future.

Areas Of Playa Del Carmen Where You Might Build A House

If you are looking to build a house in Playa Del Carmen or the area, here are some factors you need to consider.

  • If you are looking at the downtown area to build a house you will need to think about cost of land and permit process. Most of the central area of Playa Del Carmen is being turned into higher buildings with multiple units. . This means that land cost are much higher and often not cost effective just to build a house. Your permit process will also be more rigorous in the center.
  • In a planned community. There are developments with lots for sale . These areas can be attractive because they are regulated and you can have some assurance of how the area develops. This does however mean that you have certain restrictions on what you build, size and many other restrictions. Some of these are so restrictive it means basically picking a model of approved houses and deciding on finishes.
  • Outlaying areas of downtown and just outside Playa Del Carmen. Once you get into some of the newer parts of Playa or just outside you do need to think about services. This is not just electric, it can mean cell signal and internet. This can mean going off grid . The good news about choosing to build a house out of the center or outside of town are the amount of restrictions and easier permit process.
  • Hire An Experienced Home Builder

If youre working with a home builder, hire an experienced one. While an experienced home builder might cost more than one with little to no experience, youll likely make up the cost during the building process. An experienced builder can help you figure out where to spend and where to save. Theyll probably have creative money-saving ideas. And they can help you avoid problems before they arise since theyve likely had a lot of experience navigating problems in their career.

Sample Maximum Roof Beam Span Table

Spruce, Pine or Fir, No.1 or No.2 with 31.3 psf of Snow LoadingMaximum Rafter Span of 16 feet

This table is simply a sample and may not be valid for your region.

The spans in this table are based on a maximum supported rafter span of 16 feet, where the supported span is the total horizontal distance spanned by the roof rafters divided in half . So this table could accommodate a house with a total rafter span of 32 feet.

Now recall from Part 3 of this module, Beam Span Tables, we discussed that we may need structural posts to support the floor beams. In the same way you may need posts to support your roof beam. If your span table shows the roof beam cannot support the roof rafters for the whole length of your house, you will want to choose a built-up roof beam whose maximum spans are the same as your chosen floor beam spans. In this way, you can continue your floor beam structural posts all the way from the basement up to the roof beam. It is not a continuous post however. A post for each story sits on the floor surface up to support the floor beam above it. The next post sits atop this floor beam and runs up to the next floor beam or to the roof beam.

Dont Test Your Roofs Weak Spots

Using Rubber To Waterproof a Flat Roof | This Old House

What is it about a problem spot on the roof that we just want to step on? As tempting as it may be to test it out with a little pressure, dont do it! You may want to use your foot to check for weak spots on your roof, but thats not the right route to take. Professional roof repair services recommend that homeowners refrain from walking on their roof altogether. Not only is it damaging to the roof, but it can also be dangerous for you, too, as the chance of a slip or fall is high. Plus, if your roof is really weak, you may end up with a hole in your roof, and you could be going through it!
