How Many Solar Panels Can Fit On My Roof

Find How Much Energy Solar Panels Produce In Your Area

RV Solar Journey Part 3 – How many panels can we fit on our roof?

Now that you know how much electricity your home uses in a month, you need to find the amount of sunlight your area receives. This is usually measured in something called peak sun hours, which is essentially the intensity of sunlight in your area.

You can find the average number of daily peak sun hours for your state here. This number is how much sunlight you receive daily, but we need to know how much you receive monthly. To do this, simply multiply your states daily peak sun hours by 30.

The monthly peak sun hours you get tells you how many kWh of electricity 1 kilowatt of solar panels will produce in your area in one day. So, if your state receives 150 monthly peak sunlight hours, 1 kW of solar will produce 150 kWh of electricity per month.

Not sure about the differences between kW and kWh? Read our guide about kW versus kWh and what they mean.

How Many Solar Panels Do I Need For My Home

Its no use installing just one solar panelyoull need more than that to reap the financial benefits of a solar panel system. While the answer isnt always so simple, weve put together some example cases to help you understand, at a high level, how many solar panels you need to install an effective solar array.

How Much Do Solar Panels Cost On Average

The average cost of a solar panel is around $0.65 to more than $2 per watt for high-end models. That means an average 6 kW system will set you back up to $12,000, depending on the location. This is exclusive of installation costs, which can bump the price up by another $5,000 $10,000.

As a rule of thumb, PV systems in warmer locations are cheaper but require more panels, while the opposite is true with colder climates.

Fortunately, tax credits and incentives can cut solar panel installation costs and provide further savings throughout their lifespan.

Do I Need A Solar Battery Storage System

Deciding whether to install a solar battery storage with your solar panels depends on your interests. If you would like to avoid energy bills and reduce reliance on grid power, then installing your solar panels with a solar battery storage is the most appropriate option. However, if your goal is to reduce your energy bills, then installing solar panels without a solar battery storage can be an option.

A solar battery storage has several benefits

  • You can store the unused energy generated by your solar panels
  • You will be less reliant on the grid electricity
  • You will be more environmental friendly
  • You have reduced or no electricity bills

Households that install solar panels with a battery storage, use about 80% of the energy they generate while households without a battery storage use only 40% of energy they generate.

The amount of money you can save by installing your solar panels with a solar battery storage depends on the number of solar panels installed, the size of solar battery installation, and how much the batteries can discharge.

If you would like to save more energy, then you would have to install more panels and more batteries. A solar professional can advise you on different options and costs.

Space Between Solar Panel Rails And Support

How Many Solar Panels Can I Fit On My Roof?

Solar panel rails should have 12 to 16 inches of space between the first support and the end of the rail. Too much space between the rails and the panels could bounce, dangerous during a heavy storm or strong wind gusts. Two rail pieces must also have a rail splice for stability and support.

Space for roof rafters is 16 inches on the average roof, while the standoffs have a 48 inch space between each post. If you are going to install four PV modules measuring 65 x 39 inches each, the combined dimensions will be 160 inches.

Each panel has to be fastened to two rails, and the rail has to be long enough for all the panels. In other words the rail must be at least 160 inches long. If the rail is too long you can cut if off anyway, and it is easier to deal with than being stuck with s short rail.

Solar panel brackets have to be bolted with correct flashing. This will keep the rail from moving and exerting pressure on the other parts. The clamps must also be the right size and number to ensure a proper fit. Remember, your panels are resting on these mounts, so they have to be as sturdy as possible. We strongly recommend the Relmon Z brackets as they are sturdy and well built.

Do Solar Panels Need To Face South

No, east or west-facing roofs can sometimes achieve a high effectiveness rating. In some cases north facing panels can also make sense!

Keep in mind that the savings you can make by switching to solar energy depends not only on the orientation of your roof but also on factors such as the slope of your roof, and where in the country your property is located. Our handy, impartial, and completely free tool will take these factors into consideration and provide an accurate calculation in minutes.

How To Calculate The Solar Potential Of Your Roof

There are a few rules of thumb you can follow that can offer a general idea of how much roof space is needed for solar panel installation. These guidelines can also help determine how much roof space you have available to put solar panels on.

Generally, every square foot of roof space has the potential to generate about 15 watts of solar energy. Thus, a solar panel installation on a small home might only need around 200 square feet of roof space, while a larger home can require more than 1,000 square feet of roof space to properly offset electricity usage.

To offset an average amount of energy usage by the average American home, youll typically need around 18 to 24 panels to be effective. That is, of course, if everything about those panels is ideal, where the positioning is optimal, the panels are of a standard rating, and the location gets adequate sunlight year-round. If you change any of those variables, the number of panels you need is going to change as well.

If you want to get a sense of how many panels a roof can support, you don’t need a fancy solar panel square footage calculator. Heres an easy calculation you can do: Multiply the square footage of your roof by .75 to account for the required solar setback. Take that number, and divide it by 17.5, which is the average square footage of the standard solar panel size. The resulting number is the maximum number of solar panels you can fit on your homes roof.

The Size Of A Solar Panel

Its essential to understand that solar panels are not designed with the same size. So, this means that you might require a different number of solar panels, depending on the model you pick.

Hence, you can determine the size of your solar array depending on the model and brand that you prefer to purchase. Keep in mind that you need to focus on what you are installing and the specific measurements. This is particularly true if you plan to set up the optimal number of solar panels on your roof.

In particular, the average solar panel measures 78.74 x 157.48 cm. You could utilize this to compute the number of panels your roof will hold approximately. In this computation, each panel takes up about 1.239-1.44 sq. m of space.

Hence, you can set up a maximum of 12 to 15 panels for a 19.72 sq. m of roof space. You need to round your number lower instead of higher if your computations do not result in a whole number.

Size Of Your Solar Panels

How to install solar panels yourself on your roof. (It’s easier than you think)

While there is a common size of solar panels, you still have to research your preferred brand and model measurements. This means that the number of solar panels you can fit on your roof can vary. For example, a Tesla solar panel wont be the same size as a solar panel from LG or Panasonic.

Pay attention to the specific measurements of your preferred brand, especially if you want to install the greatest number of panels you can fit on your roof. The average size of a solar panel is 78.74 x 157.48 cm. You can use this to calculate how many solar panels you can fit on your roof since each panel will take up approximately 1.3 to 1.4 square meters.

If you do not have enough space, you may need to invest in high-efficiency panels or those with higher power output. This way, you can install fewer panels and still cover your energy needs.

How Much Solar Power Will You Need

To determine your homes average energy requirements, look at past utility bills. You can calculate how many solar panels you need by multiplying your households hourly energy requirement by the peak sunlight hours for your area and dividing that by a panels wattage. Use a low-wattage and high-wattage example to establish a range . Note that the size of your roof and how much sunlight your roof gets are factors as well.

If you work with an experienced solar installer, they will handle all these calculations for you. If youre searching for a calculator to figure out how many solar panels do I need?, look no further. Can I Put Solar Panels On A Flat Roof

Absolutely! Putting solar panels on a flat roof is not a problem, but it does require a few adjustments.

To optimise solar gain, panels are best set up at an angle when mounted to a flat roof.

You will also need to account for extra space when calculating how many solar panels will fit on your roof, as any row of solar panels needs to be around 1 metre away from the solar panels in front of them, from the suns perspective. This is to avoid shading from the raised profile of the panels.

It is also worth noting that as the panels are angled, they are subject to increased wind exposure. This requires that the roof is structurally sound. If needs be, a structural survey can be arranged.

Lastly, if you wish to install solar panels more than 20cm proud of the roofline of the property , you will need planning permission from your local planning authority.

This figure varies. Your electricity retailer imposes restrictions on solar power capacity depending on where you live in, sometimes even which town you live in!

These two factors, the number of solar panels and their power output are also subject to how much clean energy you want to generate for home or business use.

Lets look at the factors involved in limiting your solar power while exploring the levels of energy you can achieve in your area.

How To Calculate Solar Panel Space For Roof Example

How much electricity can I generate with solar panels on ...

Each solar panel row should have half an inch space between them. There should be 2 to 3 feet of empty space per 2 to 3 rows so a repairman can troubleshoot the solar panel . This is a general guideline as some racking mounts may need more space. Check the racking mount instructions for the specific number.

Here is an example with the solar panels to be installed in portrait. Each panel is 65 inches long and 39.4 inches wide. For convenience the width will be rounded to 40 inches.

The roof space is 360 inches in length and 240 inches from bottom to top. To calculate how much space can be used for solar panels, you have to subtract 12 inches from the edge on each side 924 inches total), as that is the limit in most US building codes.

Subtract 24 inches from the roof top to bottom surface:

240 â 24 = 216 inches

Divide 216 inches by the solar module length:

216 / 65 = 3.3

You can put 3 solar panel rows on the roof.

/subtract 24 inches from the roof width surface:

360 â 24 = 336

Divide 336 by the solar module width:

336 / 40 = 8

You can install 8 columns on the roof. 24 solar panels arranged in 3 rows and 8 columns can be installed on a 30 ft x 20 ft roof with 12 inches of space available on either side.

How Many Panel Rows Can Fit On My Roof

For solar panels that will be installed in portrait mode , divide the length of the array by the panel width in inches. To find the panels for each row, divide the array width by the panel length.

Array Length / Panel Width = Number of panels per row

Array Width / Panel Length = Number of solar panel rows

Assuming each solar panel measures 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 feet and available roof space is 14 ft W x 38 ft L, two rows can be installed. This assumes the modules are installed portrait style and at the same angle as the roof. If the panels are 3 1/2 ft wide, ten panels can be installed.

These formulas give you a general idea of how many panels can be installed. But the figures have to be adjusted to account for the hardware specs. This is why there needs to be a few inches of space at the end of each rail. The calculations account for longer rails because it can be sawed off anytime.

How Much Do Solar Panels Weigh

If youre planning on installing a rooftop solar system, understanding the weight of your solar panels is another key factor to consider. Knowing a solar panels weight is the best way to be certain that your roof can support a full installation.

While panel weights vary from brand to brand, most panels weigh about 40 pounds.

SunPower panels are the lightest of all major brands*, with some of our panels weighing as little as 33 pounds. For comparison, at the top end of the range some conventional panels weigh as much as 50 pounds.
