How Many Architecture Shingles Come In A Bundle

How Many Bundles Of Roofing Shingles In A Roofing Square?

Once you found out how many bundles of shingles in a square, you may wonder, is it the same as all kinds of shingles? Lets take an example from architectural shingles.

Well, you may find many different answers regarding this topic. Some manufacturers sell 4 bundles for a square while the other sell three bundles only. The number of shingles per bundle is also different some come with 22, the other comes with 26.

For architectural shingles, since manufacturers sell different numbers per bundle, it is always important to count your roofs width beforehand. Also, it is important to know how many bundles of shingles in a square. That way, you can avoid running out of shingles.

How Is Square Footage Counted In A House

If you live in a perfectly rectangular area, measure the length and width and multiply by two numbers. For example, if your one-story house is 60 and 40 meters high, then your property is 2,400 square feet .

Does the square footage of a house include the basement?

The basement is usually connected to the main part of the main house and is accessible from the main living area by stairs. However, sometimes only the top images of the lower floors are included in the total square of the house.

Are steps included in the square footage of a house?

Stairs: Running / trampling and landing are both calculated by the sum of the squares. They are measured as part of the floor â the descent, â so they are usually counted twice in a typical two-story house with a basement.

Does the square footage of a house include the walls?

A common practice requires measuring squares from your exterior walls, as opposed to measuring the interior dimensions of each room. This includes each wall as part of your square, though it is clearly not a usable area.

Cost To Install A Gaf Roof

A professional licensed roofing contractor charges around $2-2.5 per square foot to install regular architectural or 3 tab shingles $3-3.5 per square foot to install premium shingles. This includes labor, building permits, tear off and disposal fees.

Typically, professional installation is about 60% of the total roof replacement cost.

Its important to realize that contractor labor rates can vary greatly depending on where you live and the local economic conditions. Higher income areas on both the West and East Coast can see installation rates that are 15-18% higher than the national average.

The reverse is also true regions with lower median household earnings will have contractors that charge 10-13% less than the national average.

Another factor that may significantly increase your total installation cost is the complexity of your roof design. If it has many dormers, penetrations, valleys, etc it will be much more difficult and time consuming to do the install.

These design features also make it more challenging to make the roof watertight, compared to working on a simple gable style roof. Depending on the installation difficulty, a roofer may charge you 25-40% more for the job, on top of his base rate.

Hip And Ridge Cap Shingles

Hips and ridges are covered with cap shingles, which are 1-ft. shingle squares that wrap over the hip or ridge. Like regular shingles, they overlap for a 5-in. exposure. On roofs shingled with three-tab or no-cutout shingles, you simply cut standard shingles into caps. You can cap about 35 lin. ft. of ridge or hips with each bundle of three-tab shingles that come three bundles to the square. You can also salvage waste shingle pieces and portions of damaged shingles for use as caps.

For roofs shingled with laminated shingles, multi-cutout shingles, and other patterned shingles, youll have to order hip-and-ridge shingles that are manufactured as companions to the specific shingle product you are using. Theyre sold by the bundle and usually cap 35 lin. ft., but check with your supplier because some products vary. Just measure the length of the ridges and hips and divide by 35 to determine how many bundles of regular or hip-and-ridge shingles youll need.

To calculate a roofs dimensions, you need to measure the roof as if it were flat, then account for roof pitch, calculate square footage, and finally determine how many squares of material are required for the roof.

The calculator above can handle all of this, simply enter the length, width, and pitch, and it will determine the size of the roof in squares.

Start by measuring the roofs length and width in feet as youre standing on the ground. Remember that the length and width need to be found for the roof, not the house, so take into account that the roof overhangs the building.

    Count The Sheathing Pieces

The easiest method to figure your square footage is to estimate using the exposed roof sheathing. If youre shingling over your old shingles, then this method wont work. But if you are completely removing your old roofing or completing a new build, then this method works for you.

A complete piece of roof sheathing is 4 x 8. Thus, the square footage of one piece is 32 feet squared. Count up all the sheets on all sides of your roof. Add them up. Then account for half or quarter pieces on the edges and roughly add them up to make complete pieces.

Once complete, you can multiply the number of sheathing pieces you have by 32, which will give you a fairly accurate picture of the square footage of your roof.

    Gaf Shingles Pros And Cons

How Many Square Feet Does One Bundle Of Architectural Shingles Cover ...

The biggest advantage of GAF products is that they can suit any budget, aesthetic taste and architectural home style. Because GAF is the largest and oldest roofing manufacturer in the US, you can trust the quality of their roofing materials.

However, like any other roof, these shingles have their own flaws and disadvantages.

One of the biggest is that the shingles have an up-word bent when you install them. This makes them susceptible to blow off if there is a strong wind. This is NOT a manufacturing defect its how the shingles are designed. GAF explains this in their technical installation manual and suggests that they will settle down within 4-6 weeks. Sunshine also really helps in this settling process.

The problem is that if these shingles are installed during inclement weather seasons, such as fall and winter, you are risking a much higher chance of multiple shingles getting blown off. As a result, many roofers recommend to do the roof replacement in the spring or summer.

Another is that its hard to find a certified Master Elite Roofer if you want to get the upgraded warranty. Most roofers dont want to go through GAFs training program, and there are only 2-3% professional contractors that have this certification.

Lastly, in 2013, there was a major class action lawsuit again GAF Timberline shingles, and a number of manufacturing defects have been discovered. The suit has been settled and the issues have been eliminated. We covered this lawsuit in detail, here.
