The best roofing material for a low pitched roof depends on the slope of your roof. Assuming your roof is shallower than 4:12 and you want to use metal roofing, then the determining factor is just how shallow your roof is and the amount of money you are willing to pay.
For a roof that is only slightly shallower than 4:12, then your best bet is lapped, corrugated metal. The term lapped means that the sections of the roofing panel lap over one another on the edges. The fastener typically a 2 metal screw with a thick rubber washer screws from above through the overlapping edges of the panel, into the substrate beneath the metal panels.
The neoprene washer provides an excellent seal, and the self-tapping screws themselves make only a minimal intrusion in the metal, as the threads are fine. The washer seals the top of the hole, which is made through the part of the lap that is raised, not the valley. In that way, water will not pool on top of the screw holes but run down the sides of the lap.
If the sealant is not applied to the lapping metal panels, then the shallowest slope is 3:12. Some metal panels that lap require sealant between the seams, in addition to fasteners. If you opt to apply a metal roof sealant, such as a butyl sealant, between the laps, then your minimum slope is ½:12.

Snap A Square Reference Line
- A square reference line is important for installing roofing panels evenly. Use the 3-4-5 method to establish a reference line 90 degrees to the eave.
- First, make a mark along the eave three feet from the corner. At that mark, measure four feet toward the ridge. Then, from the original corner, measure five feet and mark where it intersects the second mark.
- Snap a line from the first three-foot mark through the intersection of the second and third marks. Since the Getaway roof is larger, I measured to 21 feet, 28 feet and 35 feet to make my square reference line.

Roofs arent always square. When you are installing the roofing panels you want to keep the eave or low side of the roof nice and flush. You dont want the metal roofing going in and out with each sheet sticking out further than the previous sheet. This makes the roof look sloppy and unfinished.
We recommend a 2 gap between the metal roofing sheets at the peak of the roof. This will allow you to move the sheeting up or down the roof. The purpose of this is to keep the roofing panels at the lower eave straight and flush. If the metal roofing is too long the excess roofing can be moved to the top of the ridge and the panels at the eave will appear straight.

How To Fix Roofing Sheets
For Box Profile 34/1000 sheets the fixings required will depend on the material used in the purlins. Cladco offer a range of fixings available to fix into most purlin materials. For example:
Self drilling TEK type screws with a 5/16th hex head and a stainless steel and neoprene bonded saddle washers, used in lower section of sheet profile to fix sheet to either wood or metal purlins. Longer screws up to 175mm in length are available for fixing through insulation materials or boarding.
Self drilling stitching TEK screws are available for fixing trims to sheet or sheet to sheet on laps. Colour caps are used to cover screw heads.
To fix the sheets, each 34/1000 Box Profile sheet has 6 troughs, for securing we recommend you fix the sheet into trough 1, 3, 4 and 6. The bottom end of the sheets you can fix in each trough to help prevent wind uplift of the sheets.
Colour caps are used to cover the ends of fixings, this allows the fixing to blend into the sheets colour.

Install Drip Edges And Closure Strips
Begin installing drip edges along the eaves and rake of the roof. Use 1-¼-inch galvanized roofing nails to secure them and place the nails about 16 inches apart. If you need multiple runs of drip edges, lap them by 1/4 to 1/2 inch, and keep the nail back from the lapped joint. As you go along, pay attention to gutters. Drip flashing should overhang gutter lips by 1/2 an inch.
Add sealant tape along the drip edge and then peel back the backer paper of the closure strip to place it on top of the tape. Dont stretch out the closure strip.
How To Lay Corrugated Roof Sheets
For a single pitch roof the minimum pitch we recommend is 10 degrees. For a single run of sheets start at the eaves and in the corner away from the direction of the prevailing wind . If the first sheet is not laid perpendicular to the eaves and ridge, adjustments will have to be regularly made when laying other sheets and a saw tooth effect at the eaves will be seen. This may be unavoidable if the building is not square.
The first row of sheets should extend over the bottom purlin and the eaves so that rainwater can drain into a gutter or beyond the wall.
Sheets should be overlapped by the next sheet in the run by at least one profile or corrugation .
Please note maximum length of sheet we can supply is up to 5m in 0.5mm thickness and 6m in 0.7mm thickness. If you require a longer length, you will need to do a 2-sheet run as above.
You should always overlap the sheets by at least one corrugation. When overlapping sheets its recommended to use mastic lapping tape.
For side laps. It is good practice to use mastic lapping tape and stitching screws to ensure a robust weather resistant joint on side laps. Lapping tape with a section of 9mm x 1.5mm mastic should be run along the crest of the profile that is to be lapped, sheet to sheet stitching screws should then be used at 600mm intervals down the lap to consolidate the bond created by the lapping tape.

Underlayment Application Of Asphalt Shingles On Low Slope Roofs

Start with a 19-inch strip of 15 lb. asphalt-saturatedfelt along the eaves, and lap succeeding courses by19 inches as shown in Figure 2-3.
Wherever there is a possibility of ice or snow buildupor the backup of water from leaves or pine needles, installa self-adhering bituminous membrane along the eaves thatextends up the roof to a point at least 36 inches inside theinterior wall line.
An alternative approach, not widely usedanymore, is to seal all laps in the lower courses of roofingfelt with lap cement or asphalt plastic cement.
In areas with extensive snowfall or windblown rain, the best protection against leakage is to cover the entire low-slope roof area with a bituminous membrane, as shown in Figure 2-4.
Vertical end laps should be at least 3 inches and horizontallaps 6 inches. If the roof changes to a steeper slope,for example, where a shed dormer joins the main roof, extendthe membrane 12 to 18 inches up the main roof slope.
Bituminous membranes are self-healing around nail holes,and because they bond fully to the sheathing, any leaksthat occur cannot spread.
As a safeguard against expensive callbacks, many roofers now apply membrane to the entire surface of any roof with a slope of 4:12 or less.
