Leaving Too Much Or Too Little Overhang

It is important to leave an appropriate amount of overhang at the edge of your roof. If the roof panels are cut too short, the water can leak down between your gutter and your siding. If they are too long, the water draining off of your roof will overshoot your gutters, falling to the ground instead.

Most experts recommend having the overhang measure anywhere between about an inch-and-a-half and two inches. Again, read the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the particular roofing panels that you are using. They should have recommendations in place regarding the amount of overhang that the roof panels require.

Minimum Roof Pitch For Metal Roof

How To Overlap Metal Roof Ridge Cap. EASY STEP BY STEP Video For Exposed Fastener Panels

One of the confusing parts about roof slope is the terminology used when indicating roof slope. While many of us might remember from high school math class that we measure angles or slope in degrees, the roofing industry prefers a different measurement. Ratios such as 3:12 is the common manner in which roof slope is notated.

Using a simple roof pitch calculator can help you determine the degree of your angle. The minimum pitch for a lapped, non-sealed metal roof is 3:12. That ratio equals just over 14 degrees.

Lapped metal roofs with sealant between the laps can go as low as ½:12, which equals around 2.5 degrees. Standing seam metal roofs have an angle of just over 1 degree. For both of these types of roofing, at their lowest slopes, would be nearly flat.

You can also use geometry to determine the angle if you only have a calculator at your disposal, but youll at least need to know the length of your rafter and have an understanding of the SIN, COS, and TAN buttons on your device.

Corrugated Screw Location For Wall Panels Or Metal Siding

There will be five panel screws and one lap screw per screw line. The lap screw is the screw that sits in the high and it is designed for a light gauge metal to light gauge metal connection. Lap screws are spaced 12 to 18 on center. The panel screws are spaced out so that every third corrugation has a screw including both sides of the panel sidelap. When the corrugated sheeting is 39 wideinstead of 37 wide the screw placement will be slightly different as shown in the diagram below.

We recommend that you use double sided mastic tapeat the panel sidelap for a wall condition also. The mastic tape will make the panel more weathertight. Mastic tape is always used for a metal roofing installation. On a wall application, mastic tape is shown in our installation guide and we do recommend that its used. The reality is many installers choose not to install the mastic tape for wall conditions.

There Are Essentially Two Parts Involved In Metal Roof Installation

Tuff Rib Panel Overlap

This involves six steps that ultimately help to install the metal roof.

Step 1

Start by measuring the area of the roof. First, measure it from the ground. This gives you an approximate idea of the area of the metal sheet you will need. Sloping roofs are hard to climb. So, dont take that risk. Also, measure the slop so that it gives the accurate surface area of the roof.

Step 3

Keep the work area organized. Do not keep screws and nails here and there. Have a box for each. Dont keep electric drills switched on. Also, keep the garbage can handy so that you can throw anything you want while working.

Step 4

Many corrugated metal roofing allows you to install it over the existing roof you may also remove the old roof if you dont want it anymore. Start by taking out the vents, boots, shingles, and flashing. Remove all the unwanted nails. Re-position the gutters if they are in the wrong place. Try to remove the old roof on a sunny day.

Step 5

Fix any damages that you see on the roof. Cracks and dents are usually common. Fix them as soon as you see them.

Step 6

Add an insulation layer so that it traps moisture between the sheathing and the metal roof. Secure the roofing felt using a staple gun.

Drive Screws Just Right

  • Fastening the panels just right is the key to a watertight roof. Here is what you should know:
  • At the eave, place screws on both sides of every rib and lined up to go through the foam closure strip.
  • Each row should be spaced no more than 24 inches with one screw at each rib on the overlapping side.
  • Start at the bottom, fastening across the panel in rows, working toward the ridge.
  • Drive screws to seat flat on the roof a crooked screw wont seal.
  • Dont over-tighten or under-tighten. Tighten just enough to compress the rubber gasket to the edge of the screw head, not past it.
  • Clean up any metal shavings or burrs right away. They will rust.

Benefits Of Lengthwise Overlap Of Metal Roofing Sheets

There are many benefits of overlapping metal roofing lengthwise, some being that it provides a stronger seam, better protection for your home, and an easier installation.

It can also save you time during installation since it carries less material waste.

It is very common for roofers to overlap metal roofing lengthwise since it allows you to have fewer seams.

It also makes your installation process simpler, as most walls are flat thus allowing you to have an easier time making the overlaps straight.

When overlapping metal roofing sheets vertically, you often see a screw or nail driven through each piece at the overlap to hold them together.

This will leave a hole in your roofing sheet which you would have to patch with flashing and caulk. This is not as efficient as overlapping metal roofing lengthwise, as it doesnt require any extra materials for patching holes or covering screws/nails

    Fixings And Flashings Youll Need

    Pro-Rib Panel Overlap
    • Screws/Nails: Fairly self-explanatory, these fixings are should be installed at the peak of the corrugations at 200-300mm centres.
    • Eaves Filler: These are designed to fill the gap between your eaves and sheets which is created by the corrugations undulating design.
    • Wall Flashing: As the name suggests, this flashing should be used when your roof sheets abut a wall and will provide a finish that prevents the entry of water.
    • Ridge Cap: This will be a separate product designed to cover the ridge of your roof. Typically, this will include an overhang which can be fixed to the tops of your sheets.
    • Verge: Like the Ridge Cap, this will be a component used to finish the sheets where your roof meets the gable.

Failing To Check With Your Insurance Company For Potential Problems Before Installing Your Roof

Insurance companies usually have certain requirements when it comes to the types of roofs that they will and wont cover. For instance, did you know that some insurance companies wont cover metal roofs that have been installed over existing shingles.

The best way to avoid any problems is by contacting your insurance agent to talk to them about the terms of your policy. That way, you can find out if there are any specific rules that you need to follow when it comes to choosing materials or installing your roof.

Remove Old Roofing And Repair Any Damage

While it is possible to install a metal roof over old asphalt shingles, a full tear-off of the old roof is highly recommended. Removing the old roof will allow you to inspect the sheathing and flashing and replace any problem areas before moving forward. That way, the sheathing and flashing can be inspected before the new roof goes down, reducing the chance of a leak.

    • Start from the top of the roof and remove the old shingles along with the flashing, underlayment and vents.
    • Hammer down or pull any large nails that are exposed by the removal.
    • Inspect the underlying roof sheathing for damage and make any needed repairs with sealants and roofing adhesive.
    • Install a layer of roofing underlayment, including a layer of felt paper or rosin slipsheet, as recommended by the roofing manufacturer. Metal panels expand and contract at different rates than the sheathing, so its important to follow manufacturers guidelines regarding underlayment.

Two: Cover Your Roof With Felt

The next step is to cover your roof. Purchase some standard roofing felt from your local home improvement store. Staple it onto your roof by inserting a staple every three inches on the edges of your room and every six inches in the space past the edges. Let deferent pieces of the felt overlap by at least three inches.

What Is The Most Common Cause Of Metal Roof Leaks

    Exposed Fastener Metal Roofing System

Example of an exposed fastener metal roof installed on wood strapping.

Exposed fastener metal roofing systems are commonly used on suburban homes in Ontario. As the name suggests, the fasteners are exposed. Screwed through the surface of the metal panels, these metal roofs are installed over battens or wood strapping. The panels overlap on all sides. These metal roofs have the following major advantages of a metal roof.

    • does not support fungus/organic growth
    • less expensive than asphalt shingles over time

In addition to having all of the major benefits a metal roof can offer, an exposed fastener metal roofing system has the following extra advantages.

    Exposed Fastener Extra Advantages

    • can square up the appearance of a sagging roof

Locally Available Materials: galvanized steel, galvalume steel and aluminum.*

*Note: it is generally not recommended to install aluminum over strapping because it is a softer metal and can bend over the gaps if stepped on.

Locally Available Finishes: pre-painted SMP, PVDF and stone coated .

Locally Available Styles: metal tile, metal shake, metal shingle.

What Is The Screw Pattern For Corrugated Metal Roofing

The screw placement for corrugated can be a little tricky. The fasteners are located in different locations for roofing and metal siding conditions. Then if that wasnt confusing enough metal roofing manufacturers have differing opinions on the correct corrugated screw placement for a roofing condition. Hang in there and we will explain this one to you in detail.

Just in case you are a visual learner we created this easy step by step video also.

There are two schools of thought when it comes to corrugated metal roofing screw placement. Both are correct.

  • Installing the metal roofing screw in the high of the corrugated roofing panel as shown below. The advantage to this method is the screws are exposed to less water and debris. The main disadvantage is a less secure connection.
  • Screws that are installed in the low of the metal roofing panel will result in a more secure connection, but will be less weather-tight. The screw will compress better when attached in the low and you are less likely to distort the metal roofing panel when you tighten the screw.
  • If the fastener is placed in the low of the panel it partially obstructs water and debris. The low of the panel is skinny and the fastener takes up most of that space. As the water drains it will go over the screw. Screws that have backed out over time or that were installed incorrectly will leak. You will avoid the bulk of this issue by installing the fastener in the high of the roofing panel.
