What Should I Cover My Pergola With For Shade
A fabric cover provides shade, but for rain or snow protection youll need something more sturdy. You can purchase a pergola with a metal roof, or you can build your own waterproof cover out of corrugated metal or plastic. As a bonus, the raindrops will sound beautiful as they hit the solid pergola cover.
Rustic Pergola Attached To A Roof As A Covered Patio
The homeowners wanted to create an outdoor space in rustic style as opposed to their refined interior spaces, but still architecturally related to their property. Thus, the designer installed this rustic attached pergola.
This pergola is large enough to accommodate a party. It is completed with a round seating setting with a fire pit in the center. There is also an outdoor kitchen and a dining table set in this pergola.
The arbor columns are supported by cement plaster. The columns deliver enough visual tie to the house exterior. The rafter members and oversized wood beams create an unusual yet warm outdoor atmosphere.
If you notice, the use of hardware and structural bolts here is minimized to achieve a cleaner appearance. Structural supports and connections are engineered to meet stringent earthquake standards in California.
There is polycarbonate that goes under the standard shingles. It looks like it stopped at the edge of the shingles, enough to make sure the rainwater will go off the shingles and right into the polycarbonate.
The rainwater later flows off the polycarbonate and to the building roof that features a gutter to collect the rainwater so it wont fall under the pergola cover. That way, the pergola remains totally dry even during the storms with no wind.
If you are curious, the lower beams here are 6x 12 cedarwood. The ridge beam is 4×12 parallam and veneered with cedar sheathing.

Bright Attached Pergola With Flowers To A Roof Of A Gray House
What a beautiful and lovely pergola! This is different from any other pergola you may have ever seen.
This is basically a traditional brick pergola. However, instead of a usually exposed structure of post and beam, this pergola has an exposed gable roof structure. There is no column to support the pergolas roof. It is simply attached to the main roof of the house.
What makes it unique is the roof is decorated with flowers. The plant you see here is Distictis Bignoniaceae with blood-red trumpet flowers. This vine serves as a cover for this uncovered pergola.
The plants were planted in a small box made out of bricks on each side of the pergolas front. Later, those are crawling up to the pergolas roof.
It covers a seating area that can be used as a spot to enjoy some cups of tea outdoor.
If you are curious how the pergola is attached to the roof, you can see here that there is a vertical wall above the window and the door. The arbor is attached below the roof overhang.
The designer decided to leave some space between the roof and the rafters to let the airflow. It is important to allow airflow so the wood can stay dry. Changes in the weather cant bother the structure too. So, the rafters on the left side here are not attached to the roof.
The vertical wall above the door is vertical pieces of wood. They were bolted to the existing wall to hold the beams extending to the two front posts.

Pergola On Flat Roof: Can It Be Done Safely
I want to put a pergola on my flat roof but am not sure if it’s possible to construct one safely. My roof is a wide open flat surface built to be enjoyed as a rooftop deck with tufflex deck layer. I want to attach the posts directly to the roof but I don’t think that is possible due to compromising the integrity of the roofing layer . On the other hand I’m not sure how to calculate if concrete blocks are enough to prevent it from flying away which would be catastrophic as it would fall 3 stories. Unfortunately there is no structure I can attach it to other than the ~4ft walls around the roof that are capped with a metal sheet.
Has anyone done this or do you have ideas on if it can be done safely? I was originally planning to just attach the pergola to concrete blocks but I’m worried about gusts of wind and have no insight on if this is safe or what amount of weight is needed to secure it. For the pergola frame I plan to use bamboo due to its light weight and strength: my idea is that the center of mass would be much lower using bamboo vs a traditional hardwood or even an aluminum frame. It would also put less load on the roof itself, but I sacrifice potential stability as cedar pergolas are 5x the weight I believe.
The roof looks like this:
In summary, is it possible to construct a pergola on a flat roof safely given my constraints ?
Edit: The roofing material is actually tufflex
Edit2: Added a more representative picture due to commentary

Is It Cheaper To Buy Or Build A Pergola
This is only really a question if you are thinking of a wooden structure. For the modern Vinyl, fiberglass or even metal structures then buying a kit or custom design are the only options.
If you are comparing like for like in wood, then Homeadvisor suggests in most cases a kit will be cheaper than a DIY construction. It will certainly be quicker to construct and many of the headaches involved with a self-design will be avoided.
Obviously the compromise is in being constrained to the designs and sizes available to buy. If, however, you are comparing the costs of a DIY project to a custom pergola built by a pro then DIY can be significantly less. As the structure is relatively simple, there are many free plans available online that include, how to, sizes and quantities.

Can You Attach A Shade Sail To A Roof
Shade sails are essentially large sheets of canvas that provide shade. You may see pictures of shade sails that have been attached to the roof, either nailed into the shingles or tied to the gutters. These methods of attaching a shade sail can create problems for your roof. A professional will attach your shade sail to your roof at the soffit under the lower structural edge, where it is safe.
Its a much better idea to attach a shade sail to your other backyard structures, such as your gazebo or trellis. You can also support your shade sail with freestanding poles that are not in direct contact with the house. That way, your roof is safe, and you can still place a table beneath your shade sail.

Attaching To Roof Top Ledger Board
- Benefit: Allows more patio roof height, this is especially true on many track homes built on a slab which generally have a short wall height that makes attaching to the wall not a viable option.
- Not designed for snow regions, the ledger board can create a “snow dam” that puts undue stress on the ledger board. Putting holes in your roof is an added maintenence however the attachment point is outside your wall line so if a leak did occur you could visibly see it and it would not get into your home.
What Height Should A Pergola Be
The height of your finished structure will have an impact on its aesthetics but in most cases, the range seems to be between 8 and 10 . The aesthetic aspects are discussed further below when looking at overall size, but there are a few other things you should also consider.
- The clearance height on the underside. When thinking about your design you should start by considering the amount of clearance height you want. It is quite possible on a custom design for the dimensions of the rafters and crossbeams to equal up to ~18 inches of height. Therefore a structure with a total height of 84 would only have an underside clearance of 610 . As a minimum, the height on the underside should be 68 which is the same as door height.
- Remembering future accessories. Once constructed you may want to add lights, fans, speakers, etc. If they hang below the rafters then in order to maintain the minimum clearance the total height will need to go up.
- Roofline. If you are attaching your Pergola to your house or placing it next to it then you will probably want to stay below the roofline. There are techniques that can be used on properties with a very low roofline such as adding an open gable but this then becomes a bigger project.

Cedar Pergola Attached To A Brown Roof
This attached pergola creates a different look from the exterior and the roof.
In fact, the exterior of this house has three different elements. The roof is in brown color. The front walls are made out of polished bricks. And the pergola is made from stained wood. Each of them, though it shares a similar shade of brown, has different color and style.
The pergola is a 16 x 18 structure that is from cedar wood. It features black post bases and beam supports. What a nice idea for a large timeless home exterior design remodels. The pergola doesnt have a fully covered structure, but it is shady enough to cover a seating area. The seating area, however, is placed right in the front porch, which is totally covered. This pergola is left empty maybe it can be used as a carport too.
Why a carport? Because it is paved in what seems like travertine. Travertine is a common paver material, and it can be used as a driveway too.
A Roof Can Raise The Value Of Your Home
When considering permanent improvements to your home, resale value is often one of the first considerations. Whether you intend to sell your home in the future or not, there are many benefits to increasing its value.
- An increased home value increases your personal net worth. This works in your favor if you ever need a loan or wish to refinance your home for whatever reason.
- Even if you do not currently plan to sell your home, life happens. Perhaps your home will be too big for you when your children grow up or maybe you accept a job that requires relocation.
- If you are mortgaging your home, increasing the value of your home also positively impacts your debt ratios, opening up the new mortgage and insurance options.
That said, a permanent roof on your pergola is an easy way to add a bit of value to your home. Buyers and appraisers alike can appreciate the other benefits to having a roofed pergola, same as you.
