The Edges Of My Rubber Roofing Can Be Seen From The Ground And Dont Look Good When They Get Dirty What Can I Do About This
After cleaning, many RVers treat visible parts of the rubber roof with an EPDM-safe protectant to clean and protect against future stains. Protectants can also help minimize messy, though natural, oxidation.
Now that youve cleaned and protected your RVs EPDM roof, take a minute to learn how to clean & protect your RV awning.
Be Sure Not To Use These On A Rubber Roof:
These can all cause a lot of damage to your rubber roof. One of the main benefits of a rubber roof compared to a PVC or Fiberglass Roof is that they are a lot more durable. You just need to use a little caution when selecting what to clean them with is all.
With all the chemicals and toxins in the general cleaners, I have always wondered what is considered safe? My 4-legged family members play and lick and do all kinds of dog-things right in the same spot that I am cleaning my toys and trailers after all.
Apply A Moisture And/or Microbial Barrier
Roofing materials and technology has advanced greatly within the last few decades.
One of those advances is the ability to apply chemicals to your existing roof that repels water, or prevents algae and mold from developing. New roofs are often constructed of materials that have these properties impregnated into them.

Why Is It Important To Clean An Rv Rubber Roof
Regular roof cleaning rids dirt and grime while extending its value. Exposure to rain, water, ice, and other outdoor elements deteriorates rubber over time. As the roof weakens, it becomes more susceptible to cracks, rips, and caulking separations. Moisture can eventually enter these crevices and cause expensive repairs.
Whether its your house, apartment, or camper, water damage occurs just about anywhere. Wetness destroys electrical and mechanical components in your RV, meaning you will have no choice but to replace them. Damp areas also eventually turn into black mold and fungi, which can cause health and respiratory issues.
Parking in shaded areas increases the risk of mold or mildew formation. Staying under trees also poses an issue, as falling fruit and seeds promote roof moisture. Instead, keep your rig in sunnier areas as much as possible to dry the rubber and keep it clean.
Furthermore, RV insurance does not cover most water damage. So, properly cleaning your RV roof at least four times a year is cost-effective and prevents these expensive damages. If you live in a highly polluted area, you should clean your RV more often to guarantee clean rubber.
Patching A Field Hole In A Rubber Roof
As you can see in the images above, the hole is in the field, meaning leaks are caused by the hole itself, and not by seams or patch work coming off. This is the easiest type of repair.
In fact, if this is the only type of leak that you have on your roof, and there are only 3-5 of these, you may not even need my KIT. You can get away with much less expensive hole patch kits that cost $16-20. You can even use rubbing alcohol instead of EPDM cleaner for a small job like this. However, if you have many holes and some outside corner flashing that needs to be repaired, the cheap kits will not work for you.
1) To apply a patch to a field hole, make sure that your patch is at least 6×6 for a pea-sized hole. For large holes you will need at least 3 overlap on each side.
2) Once the surface is cleaned and primed, take your patch and trim corners if necessary . Next, remove half of release paper and fold it back. Half of your adhesive surface is now exposed. Try not to touch this surface.
3) Place the patch with half of released tape folded, over the hole, making sure the hole is in the center of the patch. Press the patch down firmly with your fingers, and avoid any air bubbles.
4) Next, remove the remaining release paper, and press firmly with your palm on the remaining half of the patch. Slide your hand from the center out, making sure there are no air bubbles.
6) Using a caulking gun and a lap sealant tube, apply 1/4 bead of lap caulk around the patch edge.

Cleaners To Avoid Using On A Rubber Rv Roof
There are many more products that you can use to clean your RVs roof than you cant, but youll definitely want to avoid any petroleum-based or citric acid-based chemicals, as well as anything with mineral spirits.
These distillates can spell disaster for your rubber roof because of a chemical reaction that causes the rubber to swell and detach from the structural substrate below. This makes the rubber more prone to damage, not to mention these chemicals also discolor your roof.

How To Repair Aluminum Rv Roof
Have a metal roof on your RV? Heres how to seal and repair their punctures.
Resealing aluminum RV roofs
For aluminum and other metal RV roofs, resealing is done with a special coating designed for the material, such as Dicors Metal RV roof coating. This forms a rubber-like top layer and is resistant to mildew and rust.
Of course, you wouldnt apply a thick white coating to a rounded metal RV like an Airstream. For these , sealing joints and rivets with a caulking gun is essential.
Repairing punctures or tears
Depending on the size of the puncture, you may be able to repair your metal roof with a peel and stick patch. Make sure to buy one that is designed for metal roofs, as the adhesive formula is a little different. Simply clean the area, stick the patch over it, and roll out air bubbles with a small roller.
For more significant damages, the best way to repair a metal roof is by replacing the metal panel, which is a process that will vary depending on your particular RV.

Long-lasting repairs to an EPDM roofing system requires the right repair materials and careful prep of the repair area. EPDM roofing membrane is made with synthetic rubber and is incompatible with asphalt-based products. Never use any roof cement flashing and asphalt-based roof coating, including aluminum roof coating. These materials will contaminate the EPDM rubber membrane, leading to a more extensive repair.
Have your roof cleaned and inspected periodically to evaluate the roof coating. If you need to reseal a rubber roof, it might need a special fabric applied, a base coat, and an elastomeric coating as a topcoat sealant. Or you might be able to use a peel-and-stick roofing patch made of EPDM material. If you need an adhesive, use a specially formulated product called “an EDPM rubber roofing adhesive.” EPDM roofs can be repaired or patched if the original roof material is in good shape and the seams are holding.

Tpo Rv Roof Maintenance Tips
1. Pick a good detergent to use- most household laundry soaps or dish soaps will suffice if you cannot afford Dicors cleaners.
2. DO not use cleaners with harsh chemical ingredients in them. Those chemicals can damage the TPO roof and shorten its life.
3. Use a sponge mop for light cleaning but for bird droppings and other heavier dirt, use s soft-bristle brush to remove the dirt.
4. You can use bleach to clean up any mold you find on your roof. Just make sure it is properly diluted so you do not harm your roof. Or use an effective mold killer product instead of bleach. Just make sure it is not damaging to your roof.
5. When you find cracks in the roof, use Dicors lap sealant. That should be the best product for these repairs. Follow the instructions on the container to get the repairs done right.
6. Watch those seams. Make sure they are sealed well and nothing is peeling back. Re-seal those seams to hold them in place.

Roof Cleaning Pros And Cons
The average roof needs to be cleaned about once a year. This process obviously keeps your home looking great, but it can also preserve your roofs structure. Growths likesuch as algae, mold, and moss can weaken and erode your roofs surface, paving the way for future leaks. Dirt and debris also prevent proper drainage, potentially causing water to pool on the roof and cause damage.
The major drawback to roof cleaning is the price, particularly if you have a large home, a steep roof, or multiple stories. Additionally, cleaning too aggressively can cause damage, strip granules off shingles, and potentially crack roof tiles. You may also risk voiding your roofs warranty.

Periodically carry out visual checksThe beauty of an EPDM roof is that they require very little maintenance and will withstand years of neglect without any leaks or issues. However, its always a good idea to periodically carry out visual checks on your roof. This way you can spot any repair work before they become a serious issue. A useful tip is to also check up on your rubber roof after a particularly bad spell of weather such as a storm as this will help to spot any little concerns.
