Shingle Nailing In Areas Of High Winds
For areas subjected to high winds, use six nails as shown in Figure 2-11 or add twodabs of sealant at the bottom of each tab (as discussed
at WIND DAMAGE to ROOFS and as shown in Figure 2-7).
Also special wind-rated shingles with heavier sealing strips are available by special order and may be required in some jurisdictions.

Benefits Of Rolled Roofs
- Affordability: Installing rolled roofing is often less than half the cost of installing an asphalt shingle roof
- Ease of installation: Rolled roofing is simple to install as a DIY roofing installation project. Its easy to cut for eaves and ridges, and many options are peel and stick that dont require any additional tools. Even if you have a professional install it, youll likely pay less per square foot for the installation than you would with any other roofing material
- Ideal for flat roofs: Flat roofs and low-slope roofs often arent a good place to install roofing shingles because water can make its way under the individual pieces. Rolled roofing provides a much better solution for these roof types
- Easily transported: Transporting rolls of rolled roofing is easy, as each roll weighs about 75 to 100 pounds. You can pick up materials from your local home improvement store using your own car, and its relatively easy to carry rolls up to your roof for installation. Asphalt shingles are far heavier and usually need to be delivered and lifted up to your roof using heavy machinery.
Install Deck Protection & Starter Shingles
Now its time to install the roof deck protection. These roof components act as a weather-proofing and protective barrier between your house and the elements, helping keep water and cold temperatures out.
- Drip edge at the eves. Start by laying roof deck protection, or shingle underlayment, over the decking . Use chalk lines to determine where youll lay them.
- Using your cap nails, secure the deck protection to the roof. Overlap each row at least 3 to 4 inches. If you live in an area with inclement weather, you should consider using a special leak barrier protector.
- Then, install new flashing and starter shingles at the edges.
- Nail the drip edge in place using your hammer and roofing nails. Always install flashing around a chimney and other valleys where two roof planes meet as these areas are more prone to leaks if not protected.
Tip: When installing deck protection, work from the bottom to the top of the roof.

For An Affordable Roof Option Consider Roll Roofing This Material Is Very Easy To Install And Only Requires Basic Carpentry Skills
- Total Time:6 hours
- Skill Level:Intermediate
For a utilitarian solution when appearance isn’t as important, consider roll roofing, which is made of materials similar to composition shingles but generally not as durable. Be sure to check the warranty, which may be for only one year. If you install roll roofing using the double-coverage method, it will last longer.
Roll roofing is often installed over bare wood sheathing or sheathing that has been painted with a primer. Applying roofing felt first will better protect the sheathing against condensation, as well as against leaking.
If the roof is sloped, you can use the exposed-nail method. For a slightly sloped roof, use the concealed-nail method shown. For a flat or nearly flat roof, use double coverage, although a torch-down modified bitumen or EPDM roof is a better solution.
Working with a helper, expect to spend half a day installing flashings and roll roofing for a 700-square-foot roof with modest complications. Prepare the roof by tearing off the old shingles, or by preparing for a reroof. Since this is the least difficult of roofing materials to install, only basic carpentry skills are needed.
Do You Need To Prepare The Roof
Once you got the measurements and the rolled roofing, you should prepare the roof for installing the roofing.
You cannot just go ahead and apply the rolled roofing. Its vital that you get rid of the excess grime, dirt, or any other impurities from the roof. Dont hesitate to brush the roof and even to use a leaf blower for blowing all the leaves and debris that may be lying on the roof.
Put on some long pants and work gloves during the cleaning. Make sure that the shoes come with deep ridges so that they ensure a sturdy grip. Stay safe and dont go on top of the roof for hosing it. You should remain in a safe place at all times.
Dont forget to clean the gutters as well if your roof has gutters.
- Place the materials out on the floor
As you dont want to skip any steps, its better that you lay down all of your items before you proceed with the installation. Roll out the roofing sheets so that they lay flat on the ground. Use some bricks in the corner for keeping it in place the trick is also going to reduce the resistance later on.
If you decide to install the roll roofing in the winter, you should roll the roofing sheets in the garage as the cold temperatures may damage the roofing sheets.
You should cut pieces into 12-18 ft sections, laying them out flat in the backyard. Leave them in the sun for a day or so. When the temperatures go below 45 F degrees, you should store the roofing inside.

What Is Rolled Roofing
Rolled roofing is a mineral-surfaced roofing material that comes in rolls. It is thinner, less durable, and cheaper than asphalt shingles.
Is rolled roofing too good to be true? While rolled roofing is cheap and easy to install, its resale value is perilously low when it is used to roof-occupied structures. Rolled roofing is best installed on unoccupied structures, such as sheds, shops, garages, and other outbuildings. Before you dash down to the home improvement store and pick up a few rolls, you should be aware of the significant disadvantages that come along with the advantages of this product.

How To Install Roll Roofing For Maximum Life
Nonetheless roll roofing installations will have a longer life if installed according to the product manufacturer’s instructions, nailed at proper intervals, and with seams properly sealed.
It’s also important to install roll roofing over a smooth sound roof deck.
If the roof decking sags, ponding on the roof surface after rain may reduce its life.
Overlapping strips of asphalt roll roofing are installed over the roof surfaces with overlapped edge joints sealed, usually with a heated asphalt compound, or cold-applied using a similar sealant that functions at lower temperatures.

Probably in part because asphalt roll roofing is typically used on low slope and nearly flat roofs, it can have an anticipated wear life of less than ten years, often five years.
The life of roll roofing may be extended by coatings.
Place The First Layer Of Your Rolled Roofing
While youre laying down the rolled roofing, you should also stretch it for eliminating all the wrinkles and the creasing. Push it firmly into the wet cement so that it stays in place.
Use a sturdy hammer and 1in roofing nails at 10 in intervals across the roof. You should hammer the nails right into the roof, making sure that no nails are sticking up above the layer.

Deny Replacing Shingles In Extreme Weather Conditions
Introducing roof shingles to renew worn-out ones is competently executed during days when its fairly humid about 55 degrees. The issue with installing new shingles in heated weather is that your sealant will toast out shortly. Make sure to prevent direct sun.
On the other hand, roof shingling in the winter season can result in shingles becoming brittle and liable to break apart. Lastly, resist showers and intense gusts due to safety considerations.

You Wont Get To Replace Crucial Roofing Materials
When you get a metal roof-over, you bypass the tear-off process of getting a new roof. This will save you money, but you miss out on replacing crucial materials that are included in a full roof replacement.
For example, one of these crucial materials is the underlayment. Its your roof systems last line of defense for keeping your decking dry. When you roof over your asphalt roof with a metal roof, you have to rely on the underlayment from your old roof. You also wont get the proper kind of underlayment specifically designed for a metal roof.
Roofing materials arent meant to last forever. Thats why if youre already going to invest in a metal roof, I recommend starting from scratch with clean decking.

How Effective Is Rolled Roofing
Rolled roofing can be quite effective for protecting your home or building from water intrusion, and some types of rolled roofing can also protect against UV damage from sun exposure. Rolled roofing is often used on flat roofs, where the risk of water pooling is greatest, which should speak to its efficacy.
Unfortunately, rolled roofing doesnt last nearly as long as asphalt shingle roofs, slate roofs, wood roofs, or just about any other type of roof. The average lifespan of a rolled roof is five to eight years, as compared to the typical 20 years youd expect from an asphalt shingle roof.
Continue Installing Roof Shingles In 6 Row Sets
The eighth step is to continue installing shingles in 6 row sets. The seventh row of shingles will start with a full shingle, just like the first row installed.
Continue following the same 6 row pattern that you did the first time and install the shingles until you get to the roof ridge. The last row of shingles can overlap the ridge if you are not using a ridge vent. If they overlap they can be nailed to the opposite roof.

So What Is Roll Roofing
Rolled roofing is a mineral surfaced oil-based asphalt product that is available in 100 square feet rolls and weighs about 75 pounds per roll. It can be found in almost any home improvement outlet, hardware store or online source. Though roll roofing is similar to asphalt shingles, it is considerably cheaper, thinner and less durable.
How To Install Roll On Asphalt Roofing
Many building supply and hardware stores sell roll on roofing. The material is similar in composition to asphalt shingles but thinner. Many homeowners with do-it-yourself experience can quickly learn how to install roll on asphalt roofing. It is appropriate for low-pitch roofs, like those on sheds, gazebos, or three-seasons rooms. To avoid working with stiff and brittle material, we suggest that you choose a day for your project when it is at least 50 degrees. Bay Roofing has created this general guide for how to tackle this project yourself.

How Do You Calculate How Many Shingles To Buy
Measure the actual surface area of your roof rather than basing your calculations on the homes square footage. Roof pitch and elements such as gables and dormers will affect the amount as well. Use a simple roofing calculator to get a rough idea of square footage. For a more accurate picture, use a roofing calculator that can take all of these peripheral factors into account or consult with a roofing contractor.

Install The Building Paper
The second step is to install the 15 pound building paper. Building paper can be very slippery so great care must be taken when standing on it.
Roofing paper nails with plastic caps work best to hold the paper without ripping it. Make sure to only stand on places that are well nailed on and also try to always stand on a plastic nail head.
Line the building paper up with the drip edge and install one nail near the corner end. It can overhang the rake and be cut off squarely later.
Roll the paper out along the drip edge. Align it with the drip edge and install a second nail to hold it in place. Go back and install nails every 12 inches along the edges and 24 inches in the center.
The top edge does not need to be nailed because it will be nailed on with the next overlapping row.
Install each successive row making sure to overlap the previous row by 4 inches minimum.
