How To Replace Ridge And Hip Tiles
Replacing tiles at the ridges or hips of your roof is much the same as with other kinds of roof tile. You will first have to remove the existing damaged tile and reverse the process to fix a new tile to your roof. The exact method of doing so depends on whether your roof ridges and hips are fixed by mortar or dry fixings.
If your ridge or hip tiles need replacing, wed recommend refreshing the entire course rather than trying to fix just one or two tiles. This is because due to the nature of roof ridges and hips, any partial fix will only ever be temporary. Plus, if your roof ridges and hips are secured by traditional mortar, this gives you a chance to switch to longer-lasting, much lower maintenance dry fix systems.
Don’t Forget To Replace Roofing Felt
Replacing your tiles will hopefully ensure that any leaks in your roof cease immediately. However, there are instances where you will have to go deeper below the surface of the roof. If your replacement tile has not stopped your roof from leaking, it may be that your roofing felt is the issue. Even if roofing felt doesn’t seem to be damaged, it could cease to function if it is very old, so make sure you bear this in mind if you’ve exhausted all options with your tiles.

How Long Does The Moss Killer Last
Assuming that the roof isnt under tree cover, the moss shouldnt grow back for about 3 years, after 4 years there will be light growth.
For this reason, the homeowner should instruct a roofing company to re-apply the chemical every 3 years, thus preventing any moss growth and keeping the roof looking clean.
Moss killing chemicals are not expensive, expect to pay around £30 for enough to treat a semi-detached property. A backpack sprayer costs around £25 and the work takes around an hour.
If you purchase a more expensive backpack sprayer then you will find they have a very long reach, about 6 metres! That is enough to reach the top of the roof from access towers erected to gutter height.
So once the moss is initially removed nobody ever needs to get on the roof again. This reduces the amount of foot traffic on the roof tiles. Remove the moss once, re-apply the chemicals from gutter height with a sprayer every few years simple and cost-effective!
This type of work is often carried out by traditional roofing contractors, although few roof cleaning/coating companies recommend this approach as it doesnt involve pressure washers and expensive roof coatings/sealants.
It is possible to complete a roof cleaning project without pressure washing, but the chemicals do take a little time to work. Remember: the dirt you see on a roof is usually moss and lichen which can be treated and prevented with chemicals.

Early Detection Of Roof Tile Damage
Roof tiles that are inspected almost every 3 months, can be easily identified for any damage or cracks in them. Gutters cleaned each month will ensure that no debris is resting over the roof tiles and developing cracks. Early identification of any roof issue is essential for a fast response. Be it worn out underlying layers or damaged tiles, if left unidentified, it can result in cracks, holes, leaks, and water seepage into the construction. The more the damage, the deeper the impact, and the more pricey the repair will be. Identifying the precise problem area and points in the roof will ensure the repair, fix, and replacement right.
How To Replace Interlocking Tiles And Slates
For an unfixed tile, remove the damaged unit by first easing it up slightly, using a trowel and timber wedges, so that the tile can be slid out with the nibs clearing the top of the batten. The replacement tile can be inserted using the same procedure.
For a tile that is nailed, the neighbouring tiles should be lifted to expose the nail, which should be extracted carefully using a slate ripper or hacksaw blade and disposed of safely. The replacement tile can be inserted using the same procedure and re-fixed to the adjacent fixed tiles by using an epoxy resin adhesive applied to the interlock / overlock and headlap area.
Care must be taken not to bridge anti-capillary bars or interlocking water channels so that water can drain freely.
For a tile that is clipped, the clip can be prised off the interlock and the nail extracted, with the damaged tile removed as described above. The new clip and nail can then be fitted as normal , allowing the clip to rest in the clip recess of the adjacent tile. Hold up the clip, and slide the replacement tile into position, allowing the clip to be released onto the sidelock of the tile.
The above procedure can also be used to secure the tail of the course above the replacement tile.
If there are a number of damaged tiles that are clipped, it may be necessary to strip back the roof to the nearest verge or valley/hip in order to re-clip the replacement tiles.

No Pressure Washing No Flood Risk No Expensive Roof Coatings
As stated in other pages, roof coatings are often an expensive and short term approach to roof renovation/roof cleaning. There is a real flood risk, the coatings often look terrible after a few years and they being mis-sold by many many companies in the United Kingdom.
The manual approach to removing moss and applying a chemical may be considered an old fashioned roof cleaning method but it is time-proven and you certainly wont have to worry about paint peeling off the tiles.
Did I mention that manually removing the moss/applying a fungicide is often the cheapest cleaning method?
Expect to pay around £500 for a semi-detached house in Southern England. Compare that to £2000 for a roof cleaning and coating.
Damaged Clay Roof Tiles
One common cause of damage to clay roof tiles is people walking carelessly across them without the relevant equipment. If possible, ask window cleaners and satellite installers if there is another way to access the areas they need. However, if it is necessary to access the roof by ladder, make sure that ladders are not resting directly on tiles.
If individual tiles are damaged, it is best to replace them as soon as possible to avoid further damage to the roof. Tiles can be lifted up and any nails removed using a slaters rip or ripper, then simply fit the replacement clay tiles. Here is a great video to help if you have not tried this before, and feel comfortable working at height.
