How To Secure Yourself On A Roof

Using A Ladder To Climb From A Roof To A Higher Roof

ROOF HONEYCOMBING! Protect Yourself From Roof Raiders! (Rust Advanced Building Techniques EP2)

Many residential homes have a single-story portion and then a part of the home that is two stories tall. Once youve used the above steps to get onto the lower portion of the roof, you may need to get onto the higher part.

Attaching a ladder to a roof to get onto a higher section of the roof can be tricky and dangerous, so if youve never done it before, its usually best to call in a professional who will know what theyre doing and have the proper safety equipment.

How To Transport Windsurfing Equipment

Surf equipment is heavy, bulky, and expensive and so the best way to transport windsurfing equipment is by putting it in a separate trailer. However, this can be expensive.

Of course, you could try stuffing it inside the car, but this is really only possible when youre traveling alone and in a big vehicle. And all that unsecured equipment can cause a lot of damage to the occupant in the case of an accident.

So, if youre traveling with friends or family, the best way to transport windsurfing equipment is by tying it down on the roof rack. This frees up more space for passengers and supplies inside the car.

Strapping the equipment on top of your car may seem difficult but not when you have the proper gear like a tie down strap from WRAPTIE.

How To Use A Roof Safety Harness

Using a roof safety harness correctly sounds like something that should not be a big deal, but it is. Its a process, and its not overly difficult, per se, but it will take time. On the bright side, though, its not that expensive to use a roof safety harness properly. While you will need to acquire multiple pieces of equipment, and it requires a fair amount of labor and means following carefully laid out instructions, its overall simplicity and lack of major costs incurred make it something that can be carried out without too much trouble. In fact, a quality roof harness system itself should not be terribly hard to acquire and install and will likely cost you less than $500.

Figure A: Roof Bracket Nailing

Bracket nails must go into roof framing supports below the sheathing.

Build a slide guard with roof brackets and 2x6s as a first line of defense Once youre safely up to the roof, youll want to set up roof brackets and planks all along the eave. These serve a dual purpose. They allow you a safe place to step onto and rest tools and materials. And they also act as a slide guard that will help prevent you from falling off the edge of the roof if you lose your footing higher up and slide down.

First locate a truss or rafterthe roof brackets must be nailed through the sheathing and into these structural members. The exposed rafter tails on our roof made this easy. If youre not so lucky, listen and feel for a solid spot as you tap across the roof with a hammer. When you locate solid wood, carefully slide the blade of a pry bar under the shingle to separate it from the shingle underneath, and gently bend the tab up. Then you can place the nails where theyll be covered by the shingle . If you feel the nail miss the rafter , pull it out and put a dab of caulk or plastic roofing cement on the hole to seal it. Then move the nail over an inch and try again.

Roof Boots Come First

How to Secure Yourself when Working on a Roof

If you have a leak thats centered around a chimney or a pipe, you have rubber roof boots that come up from the tiles to press against the item in question.

Check your roof boots by removing them and inspecting any dry rot underneath or moisture, and deal with that appropriately. You may only need to remove your roof boots instead of removing an entire section.

Again, you might have to use the spray trick up here since a skylight leak doesnt necessarily mean its dripping near the skylight indoors.

Climb Up The Ladder And Secure It To The Roof

Once youve correctly set up your ladder and done any stabilization that you need to on its base, youre ready to climb up the ladder and secure it to the roof. At this point, the ladder should be pretty stable, and this last fastening is just for an extra bit of safety.

There are two main options for securing the top of a ladder to a roof: a cord or a specialized device.

If a gutter runs along the roofline where you are setting up a ladder, using some type of cord to attach the top of the ladder to the roof will be your best option. Tie one end of the line onto the top rung of the ladder, loop it around the top rung and the gutter, and securely tie it off.

You can use almost any strong cord, but below are a few of the most popular cord options for securing the top of a ladder to a roof:

  • Bungee cord
  • Parachute cord
  • Strong wire

If there isnt a gutter running along the roofline, or you want to use something other than a cord, you can go for a ladder stabilizer or hook. Ladder stabilizers attach to the top of a ladder and stabilize it by providing a larger surface area contacting the roof.

Whichever option you choose, make sure everything is secure, so your ladder wont shift laterally or slide out from under you.

Wear The Right Clothing

Dont just climb onto your ladder wearing any old outfit. You should always wear shoes with non-skid bottoms and gloves with gripping palms so you dont slip while on your ladder. You should also wear a long-sleeved shirt to protect your skin and safety goggles from any debris you find on your roof.

Loading A Kayak By Yourself

Now that you have all the gear you need to load your kayak, its time to talk about the kayak loading process.

While most folks prefer to get help from a friend when loading a kayak onto their vehicle, you may have to do so independently. So, having a good idea of how this works is very helpful.

The easiest way to load a kayak by yourself is as follows:

  • Place your boat behind your car with the bow of the kayak facing the trunk of your vehicle.
  • Pick up the bow of your kayak and place it on the rear part of your vehicles roof. If you are concerned about scratching your car or your kayak, consider placing a towel or blanket on your vehicle during the loading process for extra padding.
  • Lift the stern of your kayak off the ground.
  • Push your kayak forward and into place onto your vehicles roof rack.
  • Tie-down and secure your kayak properly before hitting the road.
  • Warning: Loading a kayak on your own can be difficult. If you do not feel comfortable lifting a heavy object above your head on your own, please do not attempt to load a kayak by yourself.

    Storage Of Your Windsurfing Gear

After a hard day at the beach it is an absolute must to stow your windsurfing gear properly otherwise you may find next time, rotted, rusted and stinky gear the next time you head out.

Before stowing your windsurfing equipment, remove the foot straps and keep them separate. Avoid storing your equipment in your garage or direct sunlight. The best place to store this gear is within your temperature-controlled house. Temperature extremes or high humidity arent good for most sporting gear.

    • Pay attention to the moving elements of the board, such as the mast track, centerboard, and fin box.
    • Remove the foot straps and set them aside if you have time. Allow it to dry completely without the battens before storing it.
    • Windsurfing equipment should not be kept outside.
    • Long-term sun exposure will fade and damage your gear, particularly the foot straps and the mono film on the sail.
    • Hanging a windsurfing sail is the best method to store it. If that isnt feasible, coil it around the mast loosely or fold it appropriately.
    • When it comes to the windsurf board, clean and dry it before putting it in the bag and mounting it on a wall rack.
    • Takedown the mast and place it in the bag. The boom should be disassembled, as well as the ropes and harness lines.

How to Secure Yourself on a Roof

When you finally make it to the roof, you need to know how to walk properly in order to prevent major falls and accidents. Preparation is key in this type of situation. First and foremost, do not plan to do any work on a day where the weather is less than ideal. Avoid doing work while the roof is icy, covered in snow, or wet from last nights rain. You need a dry roof and a day without major winds so that you can set yourself up for the most success.

You will also need to wear appropriate clothing. Loose-fitting clothes will give you the greatest range of motion. Rubber-soled shoes are also particularly helpful when gripping the surface of the roof.

In order to climb a steep roof safely, you will need to hold your body in the proper position. Lean your body forward toward the top of the roof to help maintain your balance. A steeper roof will require you to lean forward more significantly. As you advance toward the top of the roof, take it one slow step a time. Many experienced roofing experts recommend walking sideways, placing both feet together with each step.

When it comes time to dismount, remain crouched down just slightly as you descend.
