Squirrels Inside The Home

How to Get Rid of Squirrels in Attic or Roof

In the autumn, many squirrels try to find shelter and may come inside your home. Avoid this by trimming branches that hang near your roof and place a mesh guard on your chimney. Close up all holes into your home.

If a squirrel does become trapped in your chimney or attic, you dont want it to die inside. Make sure it has a way to get out. Hang a rope down through your chimney so it can climb back up to the roof. Or, buy a live trap to get the squirrel out of your house.

Do you have any tips for keeping squirrels away? Let us know below!

Dogs Are Natural Squirrel Deterrants

  • A dog is a great squirrel chaser, if thats an option in your backyard! Squirrels cant stand those pesky dogs! Save the dogs hair when you brush or groom it, and use it to mulch your garden beds. The squirrels wont go near it!
  • Human hair helps a well, according to one reader who shares, I used to have a problem with squirrels digging up my bulbs. Now, once in the spring and once in the fall, I ask my hairdresser to save a big bag of hair for me. I lightly dig this into the soil. Squirrels can not stand the smell of humans, so they leave the gardens alone.

Ensure Your Gutters Are Clear

No matter what type of home, gutters are a huge attraction for any type of critter. Nests can be created by birds and squirrels, or insects will be very comfortable living anywhere there is rotting or wet debris. If the infiltration of these animals in your gutters are left unchecked, they can lead to many other problems, so you want to address this right away.

The fastest way to keep animals away from your gutters is to make sure you get into the habit of cleaning them out regularly to get rid of any debris that might be blocking the regular flow of rainwater. Standing water is a huge attraction to a lot of nasty things, so keeping your gutters open is crucial.

If you are tired of cleaning out your gutters on a regular basis, there are some other solutions. A big one is to take time to install gutter guards. These types of guards have been created with you in mind, and keep unwanted debris from falling into your gutters and creating a blockage. There are a few different types of gutter guards. Here are the ones you might be interested in:

I Have A Squirrel In My Roof

Put simply, these frizzy-tailed creatures might appear adorable from the outside, but their inside is a whole different thing altogether.

They have been observed scratching and gnawing at rooftops, and their razor-like claws and teeth can tear down your roof. They will cut a new hole via the roof shingles or rip through a current one to gain access into your house.

Squirrel teeth are among the hardest of rodents. From polyethylene to the copper sheathing, there isnt anything that can impede them. Squirrels nibble and eat away at roof shingles to gain access to the decking and underlayment. Defective shingles expose your house to dampness and water damage. Besides, cut roofing tiles provide entry points for water leaks into your home.

Also, the squirrel is likely to chew on roof cables and electrical wiring.

How To Keep Squirrels Away From Bird Feeders

Protecting the bird feeders from squirrels takes a lot of wits, and the squirrels are likely to win. The process is more of an experiment with a lot of trial and error. But to help you out, here are my tw favorite things you can do:

  • Use a Squirrel Baffle! Use custom baffles on the bird feeders pole, so that the squirrels cannot reach it
  • Look for a squirrel-resistant feeder These rotate when a squirrel weighs them down, disturbing the balance. A good one to start with is the Brome Squirrel Buster.
  • Basically, if you use a squirrel baffle the animals wont be able to get up the pole. If you want to get an entirely new bird feeder, these squirrel resistant ones are also a thing of beauty. They suspend, rotate, and make it very difficult squirrels to get proper footing.

If youve got a quest for knowledge, we wrote an article about keeping raccoons off of your bird feeders that could offer some knowledge to your situation. You can find that article here.

Another live trap we recommend is by Rugged Ranch and is designed to catch multiple squirrels in just a few hours. This is ideal if you believe you have more than one squirrel in your home or even potentially a family of older babies who are able to leave the nest.

Catching multiple squirrels at one time should help you remove all the squirrels in walls at once and relocate them to another home before sealing entry points and moving on to preventative measures.

What Damages Can They Cause Inside The Attic

When you have a squirrel in attic spaces, it can get comfortable and may even breed offspring.

You wouldnt want to risk this as it can cause damage and life-threatening hazards.

Squirrels love gnawing through your exterior and interior walls. Squirrels also tend to chew on electrical wirings, timbers, or cables.

Besides this, they stack hay, twigs, and dried leaves in your attic. These are harmful to potential fire hazards.

They also leave behind a lot of their droppings and urine. If left unresolved, squirrels can cause odor problems and health risks.

These can also leak through your drywall and ceiling. Once the damage is too severe, it may affect the quality of your home.

You may also have to resort to a full attic restoration to clean up their droppings.

    Do Owls Kill Squirrels

Owls are carnivorous birds. Birds that are carnivorous and hunt for food are termed birds of prey. Squirrels are small mammals found in trees, so squirrels amongst other rodents are examples of mammals that owls eat. Owls will hunt and feed on squirrels and other small mammals when they are available.

When Are Squirrels Most Active In Attics

How to keep squirrels off your roof & attic

You will hear squirrels scampering about your attic mainly at dusk and dawn. You will hear noises early morning, and again through the evening. A squirrel may work alone or in a group to access your attic. If working in a group, these squirrels will work in shifts. During the evening hours, squirrels will mainly chew from the inside of your attic to create their access point.

Remember: Squirrels will usually make two holes into an attic or crawlspace: one entry hole and one exit.

Squirrels move into attics when the weather starts to cool. Squirrels need to prepare for the Winter season by building squirrel nests and storing food!

From Autumn into Spring, is the stretch of time you will hear the most activity in your attic. Squirrels mate in early Winter and produce offspring by late Spring. A comfortable home is essential for a squirrel family and squirrels will often inhabit attics if trees in yards or nearby brush are cut down and a squirrel loses a nest.

The average squirrel litter consists of four babies. A second litter in mid summer is not uncommon.

How I Caught The Squirrels In My Attic

So, now that I have covered all the basics, I will tell you how I got rid of the three unwelcome visitors in my home. As I said before, I checked with my local and state requirements and recommendations before tackling this problem. I also gave the little buggers time to reach a mature enough age to depart and survive on there own.In fact, I gave them all the way up until they were right at the age where the mother squirrel would be ready to force them out and start getting ready for her next batch. Unfortunately, they were not appreciative of my generosity. For several weeks, I did what I could to discourage them and to make my attic inhospitable.

We finally reached the point where I saw that they were not going to go on their own. This was mid-December and I was sure the mother was getting close to breeding again. The clock was ticking and I was nearing nuclear mode. So, I started closing up and sealing every possible weak spot on my roof. Dormers, gutters, roof gaps, etc. I spent a week working on everything to squirrel-proof my house.

NOOOOO! One of the juveniles kept coming back to the gutter guard located over their old entrance. He would pull and tug on it for about 10 minutes every day before giving up.But within a week, the juvenile had found an intersection in the roof that I had missed and was able to wiggle back in. Naturally, the other two followed. I should note that I am positive that there were no baby squirrels left inside to cause such determination.

    Consider Live Squirrel Traps

If you have squirrels squatting in your home, one way to get them out is through squirrel trapping. This allows you to remove the squirrels without touching them.

Although there have been few recorded instances of transmission of disease from these critters to animals, it is best to avoid handling them directly.

They can be aggressive when threatened, and their bite can be painful and easily infected. Instead, use squirrel traps to catch them without contact. Trapping squirrels in the attic or in the walls requires a tempting bait and a durable live trap.

You can make your own bait using bird seed, fruits, grains, and nuts, or you can buy from the store. The advantage of the latter is that it is specially designed to attract squirrels.

This commercial squirrel bait has a strong aroma of black walnut that can easily be picked up by the critters noses. Oils, seeds, and meat are combined to form a peanut butter-like consistency. Simply place on a cracker, on a bait stick, or in a small cup and place inside a trap.

Choose a squirrel trap that is humane, durable, and effective. This live squirrel trap is made to prevent injury to the captured animal. Double-check your trap before you install it to ensure that the spring mechanism is working and the door shuts securely.
