How To Tell The Difference Between Tpo And Pvc Roofing

Durability & Puncture Resistance

PVC vs TPO roof membrane Burn Test

The most obvious reason that people choose TPO over other types of roofing material is because they want something durable and resistant to punctures, especially if you live in an area that is prone to hail or strong winds. Strong hail impacts can destroy a roof quickly, so having a durable membrane on your roof is key to a long lasting roofing system. Most TPO membranes of equal thickness compared to EPDM rubber membranes have a significantly higher resistance to punctures, which means less repairs and less maintenance.

. Also, is TPO roofing PVC?

While TPO and PVC are both in the thermoplastic, single-ply family, they are very different in their base chemical composition. Both TPO and PVC look similar but PVC has been used as a roofing material since the 1960s, while TPO roofs started to be used in the 1990s. PVC has over 50 years of proven performance.

Likewise, what is a PVC roof? PVC roofing or polyvinyl chloride is a single-ply roofing solution used on commercial or industrial roofs that are flat or low sloped. PVC or polyvinyl chloride, is the third-most widely produced synthetic plastic polymer.

Which is better TPO or EPDM?

That being said, TPO seams tend to be much stronger than EPDM seams because of the way they are adhered to the roof. While EPDM is usually placed in a single sheet without seams, if there are seams, they may not be as strong.

Fully Adhered Or Mechanically Attached: Which To Choose

Roofs are typically fastened to commercial buildings in one of two ways: mechanically attached or fully adhered . Virtually all roofsfastened through either methodsit on top of a layer of insulation that rests between the roof and a metal deck, which is fixed to the structure below. Why do you care? Because failing to match your roofs construction with your actual needs can mean youre paying for value you dont actually need.

Mechanically Attached

Mechanically attached roofs are by far the most common, dominating around 80% of the market. They can be installed faster and at a lower cost. Builders like them because they can be easily inspected by the manufacturer, who can quickly validate the workmanship by verifying the fastener pattern and their proper installation.

On top of most buildings is a metal deck, then a layer of insulation, then the roof. When installing mechanically attached roofs, the membrane roll is laid down and then the screws are driven directly through the insulation boards into the metal deck below. Typically, the screws are drilled in at the edge of the membrane roll then covered with the edge of the next sheet as the rolls are successively put down. A watertight seal is then created by heat-welding the membranes together with a hot-air gun. This seals any gaps and creates a single, flat, waterproof surface.

Commercial Roofing: The Differences Between TPO & PVC ...

If youre concerned about heat and UV resistance in your building, you can choose either material.

Since both products come in light colors that exhibit reflective properties, the excess build-up of heat in building interiors can be properly managed by both types of membranes. This translates to better energy efficiency, more effective cooling, and lower energy bills as well.

Verdict: Both PVC and TPO roofs are good options in terms of energy efficiency.

Tpo Vs Pvc Roofing: Which Is Best For Your Commercial Building

TPO and PVC are both single-ply, thermoplastic roofing materials. While PVC has been around as a roofing material since the 1960s, TPO is relatively newer, taking hold of some market share in the 1990s.

Thermoplastics contain polyester or fiberglass to make the roofing more durable and a great option for dealing with inclement weather. So, with the materials being fairly similar, how do you choose?

Tpo Vs Epdm: Which One Is Best For You

TPO roofing vs EPDM roofing, which roofing system is best for your building? The fact of the matter is that both of these roofing systems work extremely well at protecting your commercial building, as well as the contents inside your house. Your choice is completely dependent upon your geographic location. You should take into account the amount of rain, hail, and heat that your area receives.

Your choice may also depend on other external factors. For instance, your intent to get solar panels installed on the roof. Both of these systems can be mechanically fastened which may be an advantage in cold weather installation. They also have the ability to be fully-adhered systems, which is the best approach for the sake of warranty usage and durability.

Many homeowners wonder: is TPO membrane really cheaper than PVC?

While PVC MEMBRANE is more expensive than TPO roofing, per square foot of same thickness material, the overall system costs is about the same, or even in favor of PVC.

Therefor, we can answer the above question in two ways.

1) Cost of materials when you consider everything is about the same, as we explain in our TPO Prices guide.

2) Total installed cost may be in favor of TPO, because contractors just put more markup on PVC .

Labor is the same for both systems, or even more intensive for TPO, because of glued seams, that were introduced by TPO manufacturers in the past 10-12 years .

In the end since materials and labor costs are the same , TPO does not have any price advantage over PVC membrane.

However, if you get different quotes, discuss with your roofer that their costs are the same, and why are they charging more for PVC roofing.

Tpo Vs Pvc: Choosing The Best Roofing Membrane For Commercial Roofs

Helping Property Management Companies- Owners- Investors- Commercial- Multi Family #yourroofourpassion

TPO and PVC are single-ply membranes designed to be used on low slope and flat roofs for either residential or commercial buildings. They are a part of a broad family of roofing membranes that are more commonly used on commercial roofs. There are specific differences between TPO and PVC worth knowing when deciding which one to choose for your commercial roof.

TPO stands for Thermoplastic Polyolefin and PVC stands for Polyvinyl Chloride. PVC has been commonly used since the 1960s on commercial roofs. TPO was originally designed to be an improved version of both PVC and another rubber membrane called EPDM or Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer. TPO combines the benefits of PVC and EPDM, making it more flexible and reflective, as well as environmentally-friendly and more weather-resistant.

Is There A Visual Difference Between Tpo And Pvc

What kind of TPO exactly can you see through??? Poorly aged defective stuff?

Off the rack, no you cannot tell the difference visually. You can feel a difference- PVC feeling more waxy, and feeling more pliable then TPO

PVC also has a distinct PVC Smell to it.

Yeah- 20 years ago, and further back, a bunch of junk thermoplastics were made. Several bad PVCs, most of the Hypalon products, and TPO which at that time was a very new product to the market- so new that most manufacturers actually called it TPA since they would routinely change the core supplier ingredients and percentages of each component. Virtually all of them were under tested, and failed.

When you referred to see through I thought you might be referencing the actual opacity of material. There are a number of PVC sheets that are produced with a level of transparency so that they can transmit light through them- most of the dome type structures. I tried to have a TPO sheet produced a couple years ago for a series of large dome roofs . Regardless of how thin the TPO was manufactured, and even if it was unreinforced it was still 100% opaque. We couldnt get light to pass through the it. PVC though, can be made quite thick and still transmit light.

Environmental Impact Of Tpo & Pvc Roofing

PVC materials are made with plasticizers, which are not as environment-friendly and are generally harder to dispose of. They also contain chlorine and other chemicals that could be harmful to human health.

Meanwhile, TPO is completely recyclable and doesnt emit dangerous fumes when exposed to heat.

Which One Is Better

Can You Walk On PVC Roofing?

When it comes to looks and efficiency at reflecting UV rays, TPO roofing materials are much better. TPO roofing comes in a wide variety of colors, suiting the tastes of most RV enthusiasts. However, due to their questionable longevity, it is still a bit too early for TPO to become the top roofing material for RVs but it is getting there.

EPDM, on the other hand, is more durable and at just 80 cents a square foot, a much more affordable choice for RV roofing. However, since it is not as appealing and does not reflect UV rays that well, it is far from the perfect choice for your RV.

Also, considering that EPDM also comes in lighter colors that help reflect the light and heat of the sun, it makes it a better choice for your RV.

Tpo Vs Pvc Roofing: Weather Resistance

The biggest advantage PVC has over TPO is its chemical resistance. For buildings with grease traps and oil exposure on the roof, this characteristic may be most important.

However, although TPO experiences weathering due to acids, its much better at weather resistance in general. Compared to PVC, its less likely to tear, break, and puncture as a result of non-chemical factors.

PVC has weak puncture resistance, and it is especially prone to shattering in cold climates. It may also shrink faster over time due to varying weather conditions.

Verdict: Generally, TPO roofs are more weather resistant, but PVC roofs perform better with acids and chemicals

Tpo Vs Pvc Roofing: The Verdict

When deciding on which would be the best for your building, consider the location and the budget that you have. When it comes to a durable roof that is also environment-friendly, TPO roofing is a great option.

If you are up for a more chemical resistant roofing and are looking for a cost-friendly option, PVC roofing is the way to go.

Tpo Vs Pvc Roofing: Environmental Impact

EPDM vs TPO Flat Roof – What’s The Difference?

The main issue with PVC is that it contains chlorine and other chemicals, which can be harmful to human health during production.

In addition, these can cause environmental pollution when disposed of. If you think about the volume of PVC thats manufactured for the construction industry, the negative effects can quickly add up.

In contrast, TPO is made of completely recyclable materials. When exposed to heat or fire, it doesnt emit fumes either, so it doesnt pose health risks or detrimental environmental effects.

Verdict:TPO roofs are a more environmentally-friendly choice.

Is Pvc Roofing Better Than Tpo

PVC is the perfect construction material, especially in harsh environments. Its resistant to chemical damage and punctures, flexible enough that it can be easily installed into any environment with minimal fuss. But what really sets PVC apart from other materials is its resistance to weathering or decaying over time unlike your average wooden structure, which could fall victim after a few decades of exposure, PVC membranes will last longer than you might think!

However, some people are concerned with using plasticizers in PVC because they break down more quickly than the rest of the material. This increases degradation rates and also leads to higher costs for materials and an increased environmental impact.

Thermoplastic Polyolefin Vs Polyvinylchloride

TPO stands for thermosplastic polyolefin. This material is energy efficient and reflective of sunlight. TPO is also very easy and quick to deal with when it comes to installation, so its a nice go-to when the roofing needs are immediate. It is extremely durable and lasts for a long time, as it is resistant to grow mold or suffer cracks.

When it comes to PVC , commercial building owners might purchase this material instead if theyre less likely to have extreme weather. PVC is good for more moderate climates and flatter roofs it is very low maintenance, which is a plus. Like TPO though, it is also energy efficient.

In fact, with both materials youre likely to have lower bills due to the cooling effect these roofing materials have.

Disadvantages Of Using Epdm

MAC Construction & Roofing

It does not have curb appeal The biggest drawback to using EPDM is that it is just plain unflattering to look at. The black EPDM has the same look and appeal as a rubber tire inner tube stretched out over your RV. EPDM does come in other colors, like white or tan, but they are a bit more expensive, like 30% pricier than the usual black.

It absorbs heat Because EPDM comes mainly in black, it absorbs heat fast. It is so efficient at absorbing light and heat that it might even superheat the interior of your RV when you leave it under the sun for a couple of hours.

Again, you can get EPDM in lighter colors to reflect the light and heat in warmer climates but they are more expensive, which fails the purpose of choosing EPDM in the first place.

Is Tpo A Good Roof

TPO roofs are newer than PVC and have a few advantages over them, but they are not without disadvantages. TPO roof panels can be made in any color desired, which means that the TPO roof will match your houses siding nicely most of the time. You also dont need to worry about when it comes time to replace your gutter system, as TPO doesnt require gutters! TPO roofs do cost more upfront, though, because they typically use thicker pieces of material , so youll see those costs reflected on your monthly payments for years. If youre looking for an affordable way to get new roofs, then TPO may not be suitable for you. TPO roofs are usually more expensive than PVC, and you may find that your budget will only allow for a TPO roof to be purchased after a few years of saving up the money if at all!

So Which One Is Better

As you can see from the comparisons above, TPO roofing is a much better choice for most flat roofs than EPDM is. This is not to say EPDM isnt a great roofing material, because it is and has stood the test of time, but overall TPO roofing membranes have the distinct advantage across almost every area of comparison. From ease of repairs to stronger seams and energy efficiency, there is an obvious winner.
