Tesla Solar Can Be An Affordable Option In Florida

Saving on ones electric bills is a primary reason for moving over to solar, but are the savings worth the overall cost? The average cost of solar power for Floridians is $2.70 per watt, which is competitive compared to other states around the country. Tesla has touted that it offers the lowest cost for solar panels in the United States.

Teslas cost for solar panels ranges from:

  • $8,200 for a 4 kW system size = $2.04 per watt
  • $16,400 for a 8 kW system size = $2.01 per watt
  • $24,600 for a 12 kW system size = $2.01 per watt
  • $32,800 for a much larger 16 kW system size = $2.01 per watt

The reason solar is attractive to Florida residents is because of the federal and utility incentives. For example, there is a federal solar tax credit that allows homeowners to claim 26 percent of the cost of their solar system as a tax deduction on income taxes. Basically, this tax incentive gives you a 26 percent rebate on your Tesla solar purchase:

  • $6,068 for a 4 kW system size
  • $12,136 for an 8 kW system size
  • $18,204 for a 12 kW system size
  • $24,272 for a much larger 16 kW system size

Applying for this tax credit is easy, as you simply fill out Form 5695 when you are filing your taxes and then receive the deduction back from the federal government . In addition to this federal tax deduction, Florida also offers residents incentives through its Property Assessed Clean Energy program.

How Much Does A Tesla Solar Roof Cost Compared To Solar Panels

Its easier to compare these costs with an example, so lets dive in.

Lets say you own a home in California with a simple complexity roof thats roughly 2,000 square feet, and your average monthly electric bill is $200. Tesla would recommend installing a 8.18 kW solar roof that would cost $45,300 before the federal tax credit, and about $33,600 after the tax credit.

An 8.18 kW conventional solar panel system would cost about $24,540 before the tax credit, and $18,160 after the tax credit based on the average cost of solar in the U.S. This solar system is cheaper than the Tesla solar roof on its own, but the solar roof isnt just a solar panel installation – it also includes the cost of getting a new roof.

So, how much is a traditional roof replacement? Well, lets say you use architectural asphalt shingles that cost around $8.00 per square foot including installation it could cost about $16,000 to reroof the entire roof. That would bring the total cost of installing conventional solar panels and completing a roof replacement to $34,160.

In this example, the Tesla solar roof costs about the same as a traditional roof replacement and solar installation. But, if your roof ends up being more complex, the solar roof system could cost you another $11,910, making the difference in price more stark.

Who Are Teslas Solar Roof Competitors

Though the buzz around Teslas illustrious roof product has made it appear like its a new concept, it is merely the continued repackaging brilliance that some call the Musk effect. Development of solar roof tiles and solar shingles has been evolving for many years, and a number of companies have taken a stab at designing a versatile, subtle rooftop solar medium that could be considered a genuine roofing material rather than a module add-on. Here are some of Teslas solar roof competitors that offer similar BIPV products:

Its important to note that the solar shingles and tiles offered by these companies do still stand out against other roofing material. None can compete with Tesla in terms of aesthetics or subtlety, but they do offer low-profile BIPV solutions that may alleviate aesthetic concerns for some solar shoppers.

PENSACOLA, Fla. A Northwest Florida solar installer unveiled new technology this afternoon for homeowners looking to get into solar energy.

Using the suns rays and turning them into electricity isnt anything new. But the Tesla Solar Roof is the future, according to those at SunFarm Energy.

This is actually the skin of the building where were not mounting a module on top of the roof but this actually is the roof, said Doug Herrick, President and CEO of SunFarm Energy.

Rather than installing several solar panels, the glass Tesla roof acts as a large solar panel, generating enough energy to power an entire home.

Its highly engineered to withstand forces in our area, Herrick said.

Herrick says Teslas solar roof allows homeowners to enjoy the benefits of solar, without having to sacrifice the appearance of their home.

Theres a lot of room for growth, he said. We might see the skin of the building, not just the roof, coming down the line.

The use of solar energy is steadily on the rise and Teslas technology is just the beginning of whats next for renewable energy, according to Herrick.

Our mission is to transition the Gulf Coast to renewable energy, he said. This is just another great solar product weve seen a lot of interest in.

SunFarm Energy held an open house Thursday from 4-7 p.m. for homeowners to check out the technology.

Additional Costs And Upgrades

Depending on the current infrastructure present in your home, Tesla mentions that it may be necessary to perform additional upgrades during installation. This includes services such as extra electrical work or installation of a Solar Roof on a shed or deck. Prices are quoted directly to you upon inspection, but it is important to note that they are not included in the Solar Roof calculator estimate.

Traditional Solar Panels Versus Solar Panel Roofing Materials

Traditional solar panels can be effective but they have many drawbacks. The panels can be large and bulky, they are installed over the roof so they are highly visible, the panels may not stand up well to adverse or extreme weather conditions, and they can detract from the overall look and beauty of the home.

Solar panel roofing materials eliminate many of the drawbacks that traditional solar panels have. Solar shingles with photovoltaic cells have been developed which get rid of the panels that sit on top of the roof. These specialized shingles are strategically placed on the surface of the roof to provide protection and collect solar energy when sunlight is available. Areas where PV shingles can not be placed are covered with shingles that do not contain the special PV cells, providing a roof that is attractive and that seamlessly blends both shingle types while still capturing any solar energy available.

Can You Go Off

While it may be difficult to go completely off-grid with a Tesla Solar Roof, if you have enough Powerwalls, it is possible to reach a high level of self-sufficiency. Ultimately, whether or not you can go off-grid will depend on your initial Solar Roof and Powerwall investment, and how much energy you use throughout the year.

Tesla Solar Roof Review: Is It Worth The Hype

NW Florida solar installer shows off Tesla Solar Roof

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced the companys solar roof shingles back in October 2016, causing a huge media stir.

However, it wasnt until April 2018 that the electric vehicle manufacturer began the rollout of their first installed solar roofs. Even then, very few were installed, making it hard to gauge if the Tesla solar roof was as revolutionary as the company claimed it would be.

Then in October 2019, Tesla released the Solar Roof V3, boasting it as their best solar roofing product yet. With a 25-year weatherization warranty and a Class 3 hail rating, the new Tesla solar roof is expected to be more durable than previous versions.

But, are Teslas solar shingles actually worth the hype theyve been getting in the media for the past four years?

Regulators Allow Tesla To Offer Solar Leases In Florida

On Tuesday, February 5th,the Florida Public Service Commission confirmed thatTesla can offer solar leases to Florida residents. This paves the way forTesla, formerly SolarCity, to offer the financing mechanism that made theresidential solar industry boom for the last decade or so.

But in todays climate, wheremore and more homeowners are continually opting to purchase their solarinstallation in cash or via a loan and where Tesla itself is focusing on cashfinancing does this the PSCs decision really change anything?

The Final Verdict: Should You Buy A Tesla Solar Roof

The Tesla Solar Roof is a gorgeous product with a prohibitively high cost to install. Right now, its largely a premium solution for early adopters who dont mind paying more to access cutting-edge technology in high demand. Anyone who invests in the Solar Roof should also be willing to contend with more frequent maintenance than a traditional solar array might require.

Lastly, you should be willing to wait for production to catch up to demand. Just know that youll be running on Teslas schedule, and theyre a lot better about generating hype around new products than meeting production deadlines.

Scenario : Youre Interested In Going Solar And Also Need To Replace Your Roof

While this is a less common scenario, it may fit you if your current roof is coming up on the end of its useful life. This scenario may also fit you if youre in the process of building a new home from scratch, and havent picked out your roofing material yet. In this scenario, unlike the first one, you are on the market and actively shopping for both a new roof and a solar panel installation.

If this description fits you better, Teslas Solar Roof may make more financial sense. In this case, you have the option of either replacing your roof first and then installing traditional solar panels, or combining both actions with the installation of a Tesla Solar Roof.

In our example, lets assume a $5 per square foot cost for an asphalt shingle roof replacement for your home in California. Based on these criteria, lets see how your new solar panel and roof replacement will compare to a new Tesla Solar Roof, based on varying roof size:

Roof size
$53,000 48%

So, in this case, the cost of new solar panels and the cost of a roof replacement and a new Tesla Solar Roof are most comparable if your roof is only 1,500 square feet. However, as explained above, its important to note that your ROI will likely still be lower because the efficiency of the Tesla Solar Roof is probably lower than that of solar panels and your system size is smaller meaning your electricity bill wont go down as much as it could.

Tesla Solar Roof: How Installation Works

Tesla Solar Roof buyer left without roof and tarps over ...

Alex Guichet, a games developer based in Cupertino, gave perhaps the most detailed rundown of the installation process for a third-generation Solar Roof. On October 23, 2019, two days before the new product was announced, Guichet signed a contract with Tesla to install the new tiles before they were announced.

Nearly three weeks later on November 11, Tesla confirmed that the installation permit had been secured. Two days later a subcontractor removed their original roof over the space of two hours. Tesla delivered the materials on November 15, and the company’s roofing crew completed work on November 22. This included delays from rain and the weekend.

On December 2, the team started wiring up the electricals, a process completed two days later and fully tested a further three days later. It passed local government inspections on the 11th, and the following month Guichet received permission to start operating from the power company.

Energy When You Need It Most

You likely know Tesla to be one of the leaders in green technology in the automobile industry. Now you can apply the environmentally friendly ingenuity of this company to your homes energy supply.Tesla Powerwall is a backup battery that can help you achieve energy independence when coupled with solar panels, or energy security for traditional grid-connected homes. The unit is designed to seamlessly integrate into exterior or interior applications, and can be programmed to discharge energy when low-cost, backup energy is most needed, like at night or during grid outages.Whether youre employing solar energy or not, Tesla Powerwall will keep your lights on during the next storm or hurricane while your neighbors search frantically for flashlights. And itll help make your monthly energy bills significantly lower!

Tesla Solar Roof Cost: Is It Worth It

That depends on the situation! While Tesla claims its third-generation tiles are competitive with the cost of a roof plus solar, it’s still a big ask to replace the roof. If you don’t need to spend the money it might be worth looking at alternatives like a retrofit. There’s also a number of competitors on the market like Luma Solar, which may be worth exploring before taking the plunge.

Should You Wait For The Tesla Solar Roof

Standard solar panel technologies are typically evaluated based on their performance, durability, and warranties. However, Teslas lack of transparency makes it difficult to compare to traditional solar panels. Four years after the initial launch of Teslas solar roof, the company still hasnt revealed the shingles efficiency and customers are still experiencing long wait times and surprise price increases.

If youre in dire need of a roof upgrade or if you wont need a roof upgrade for a while, the Tesla Solar Roof may not be worth your long wait. Solar panels are extremely dependable . However, if you need to upgrade your roof soon and your roof isnt too complex or large, you may be a good candidate for the Tesla Solar Roof. Additionally, if youre set on the look and have the capital to cover the cost, the system may be the best choice for you, though it may be worth your while to compare the Tesla Solar Roof to other solar roof products.

Tesla Is Continuing To Innovate Its Solar Roofing Product

Tesla is known for its high levels of innovation, so it should come as no surprise they are continuing to innovate solar roofing despite not making their solar roofing widely available as of yet. Anew patent recently revealed that Tesla has come up with a way to speed up installation and simplify the wiring required to install solar roof tiles. The patent is titled Hinged Building Integrated Photovoltaic Roof Tile Modules.

With the new patent, its obvious Tesla is swapping the use of traditional, external wires for each one of their PV modules to a more mechanical system. Doing so will help almost eliminate the wiring currently needed for each module. Additionally, individual mounting blocks and drainage blocks will no longer be needed to mount PV modules. With the new technology, Tesla can mount a single backbone to the roof for every row of modules, thereby requiring less measuring and calibration in turn speeding up the installation process, which could potentially help homeowners save money.

Solar Shingles Could Soon Be Available Affordable

Energy companies are racing to create shingles that generate solar energy, and one firm says the cost might be only $15K more than a regular roof replacement.

NEW YORK Tesla first made solar shingles a thing in 2016, when the company unveiled the Tesla Solar Roof. Blending asphalt shingles with the means to generate energy was a new idea one that other companies have tried to emulate.

Consumers have been hesitant to adopt solar shingles because of the steep cost to manufacture and install them. Also, theyre not yet as efficient as regular solar panels.

GAF Energy is the latest company to join the solar shingle race. One of the largest roofing companies globally, GAF Energy announced its launch of solar shingles with the debut of Timberline Solar, which it says will be a cheaper alternative to Teslas Solar Roof. The company already won attention with a Best of Innovation Award for Smart Cities at CES 2022, the annual mega tech show that ran last week in Las Vegas and virtually.

Were part of the worlds largest roofing manufacturer, Martin DeBonon, president of GAF Energy, told CNBC. We have access to materials that typical solar companies dont have access to. No one has ever specifically tried to make a solar product that a roofer can install. And weve done it, and our product goes on with just a nail gun. It goes on twice as fast as typical solar.
