What Is The Importance Of A Roofings Thickness

How Much Per Square For Roofing Jobs

The thickness of the metal roof is important for several reasons. The thicker your panel, the stronger and more durable it will be against natural elements like wind, hail and fire damage.

Thicker panels can also carry a higher weight load- which means theyre better at containing heavy snow accumulation over time in colder climates.

Thin gauge panels are easier to install, but theyre also lighter and therefore not as strong. If you live in a climate with heavy winds or hail, then thicker panels are the better choice for your metal roofing installation project.

It is important for a homeowner to know about the gauge of their metal roof. When talking about metal roofing gauge, or thickness, is used. Thicker metal can counterbalance heavier snowfall and high winds.

Thicker steel roofs are the best when it comes to weathering harsh climates with heavy snowfall or high winds in places like Michigan, Minnesota, or in coastal regions.

Thinner metal roofing doesnt hold up in extreme weather conditions as well as thicker metal roofing. Thinner steel roofs are better suited for places where weather conditions dont tend to be so harsh.

The thickness of the metal used in a roof affects how long it will last, as well as its durability and its ability to withstand certain types of weather.

Cost To Tear Off And Replace Roof

If your roof is old or the integrity is compromised, it could be more cost-effective to completely tear off and replace your roof. If youre replacing a roof that already has a sturdy underlayment that shields your home from ice, snow, and water, then your roof can be installed on top of this. But if youre tearing off a lighter shingle and installing a new, heavier shingle, you may require a more sturdy underlayment or you may need to replace the underlayment that exists, which will drive up labour costs.

The cost of roof replacement varies on the size of your project:

  • Full roof replacement: On a 1,000 square foot home with a low to mid-range roofing material, expect to pay at least $5,000 to tear off and replace your roof.
  • Partial roof replacement: If you can effectively remedy one part of the roof, you will save money on a partial roof replacement. Costs vary, but a full replacement usually costs at least $7,400 for a 2,000 square foot home, while a partial replacement could cost considerably less.
  • Shingles replacement: If youre replacing shingles with a heavier material or live in an older home where the rafters need to be replaced, you might be looking at additional costs of $1,000-$14,000 to replace the infrastructure that supports your new roof.
  • Re-roofing a 3,000 square foot home can cost anywhere from $10,200-$25,000, depending on the slope of your roof, your roofing type, the cost of labour, and the accessibility of your roof.

What Is A Roofing Square How Big Is A Square Of Shingles

A common question we get at Roofing Solutions is to define the term roofing square.

Whats a roofing square? How big? In feet? In yards?

In the roofing industry, the term square is unique. It does not refer to squared feet. Nor does it refer to squared yards.

Instead, a square is a term of measurement all its own. One roofing square is equal to 100 square feet.

So, in a sense, were talking about square feet, but using this unit makes it easier to calculate the footage or required materials and cost of a roofing project.

How Many Shingles Are In A Square

When the time comes to buy shingles for your roof, keep in mind that they are usually sold by the bundle. Each bundle is a wrapped package of shingles with such a weight as to be lifted easily by a person.

The most common is to have three bundles of shingles for a square of roof area. In other words, if you buy 3 bundles of shingles, this will cover one square which is 100 sq.ft of area.

The most usual case when buying standard shingles , there are 29 standard-sized shingles in each bundle.

Summary of the above:

1 Square of Roof = Covers 100 sq.ft area = Need 3 bundles of standard shingles

Calculating The Area Of A Complex Roof

Areas of complex roofs with multiple hips and valleys take the most time to calculate. Start by making a rough sketch of the roof. To simplify the calculation, break down the sketch into rectangles and right triangles , then take as many measurements of the roof as you can to match the sides of the rectangles and triangles on the sketch.

Use visual cues from the existing roof shingles or roof sheathing to determine square lines off eaves edges or ridges. These cues will help you measure the lengths of the sides of the rectangles and triangles. For instance, the cutout slots on shingled roofs run perpendicular to the eaves, and nail rows in sheathing are pretty close to square also. It is difficult sometimes to get accurate measurements. Dont get too concerned though just round lengths to the nearest 6 in.

With the sketch filled in with measurements, you can determine the size of the roof area. The area of a rectangle is length multiplied by width, whereas the area of a right triangle is the length of the two sides that meet at the 90-degree corner multiplied together and divided by two .

Tally the square footages of all the rectangles and triangles, which will give you the total square footage for the roof. The example here shows the calculation for a roof with two hips.

How Much Roofing Underlayment

Up till now, we were discussing how to measure roofing shingles for re-roofing. When talking about a new roof, the same amount of square footage is required for the underlayment.

You will find underlayment in rolls of four squares each. In order to determine how many rolls of underlayment you would need, you need to divide the number of squares for 2 planes by rolls of one square.

  • Rolls of underlayment required: 280 sq. ÷ 4 = 70 rolls

If you are applying the shingles over an asphalt roof, then you dont need underlayment.

Pro Tip: In order to avoid any delays in installment due to shortage of shingles, add 10% to the total material requirement for trim allowance.

The Different Types Of Flat Roofing

There are four types of used in the Boston area.

Perhaps the most well known type of flat top roofing is called the built-up roof. This type of roofing consist primarily of several layers of materials that are laid down on top of each other. The material used can be quite varied, including everything from hot tar, gravel, fiberglass and even roofing felt. One of the significant advantages of this type of roofing is that it is fire-resistant, but because of the smelly nature of the hot tar used, using it on buildings that are regularly occupied isnt always the best option. This choice can be a very economical one, with the cost per square foot of installation being somewhere between $3.50 and $7.00.

Keep in mind though, EPDM membrane roofs arent the only choice available if youre considering a membrane style roofing system. Another choice is a PVC membrane roof. Although it is a bit more expensive at $7.00 to $11.00 per square foot due to the increased amount of labor, it does have some significant advantages. One of the most notable is the sheer overall durability of the roofing system. Another is the fact that it is one of the most environmentally friendly options on the market today. Its also resistant to many chemicals, moisture, wind, fire and even some chemicals. As you can imagine, a roof made from this material has a significant chance of surviving here in Massachusetts.

What You Need To Know About Asphalt Shingles

What is a Roofing Square? (How Big)

The least expensive form of shingle is asphalt which comes in two different physical qualities to meet your needs. Theyre ideal for roofs with a higher pitch to avoid being blown off by strong winds since higher slopes mean a more vertical placement for individual shingles. Asphalt is the popular shingle of choice for homeowners and professional installers alike because they can be custom made in many styles of any color and require some to no structural planning to install.

Forms of Asphalt Shingle Roofs

Organic and fiberglass these are the two types of asphalt shingles that can be perfect for your home, depending on your regions climate. If you live in a state in the Southwest, North, or in any area that sees a lot of rain annually, both variations of asphalt will keep the top of your home waterproof. Both forms of asphalt are treated with resin to give their already grainy look a glistening finish and a protective waterproof surface. The main difference between the two is that fiberglass shingles can withstand Class A fires, albeit it is more expensive. But if you live in an area where fires are commonplace, its a no-brainer that fiberglass shingles are the way to go.

The Price of Asphalt Shingles

If your project is going to involve removing an already existing roof first, add $3 – $5 per square foot or $40 – $80 if theyre charging you by the hour.

Varying Roof Styles Make The Term Roofing Square More Common

Another reason that you cant always divide square footage by 100 to get the number of square is because every roof shape and style is different

For example, measuring a gable roof is fairly straightforward, but measuring a gambrel or mansard style roof can be a bit more complicated. Waste becomes a major factor when measuring more intricate roofing types like mansard and hipped roofs. Waste happens when shingles need to be cut to fit tight spaces . They are not always nailed in even rows along the roof deck.

With more complex roof types, you quickly realize that not every square foot of measurement is created equal! Overall, the phrase roof square helps bridge the gap for projects both simple and complex.

As long as you have an experienced roofing contractor to work with, you can breathe easy knowing that at the end of the day, the correct amount of materials will get delivered and that your roof installation will go 100% according to plan! Don’t Miss: How Often Should A Roof Be Replaced

How Many Square Feet In A Roofing Square

Well, heres a question that has bugged many a homeowner. It may sound as simple as taking a look at your roof and estimating what would equal a square and ask your contractor to come up with some magic. Well, it doesnt really work that way.

Its not only doctors or musicians that have jargon specific to their industry and workplaces, but also something common in every organization and industry. This also makes it true for roofing contractors. Whereas the words may mean one thing to you the outsider, they have a totally different meaning to people in a specific industry.

How Much Does It Cost To Tear Off A Roof

Flat Roofs and Snow Loads

The next thing you need to consider when totaling the cost of a roof replacement is the cost of tearing off your original roof. This depends on the company you hire, the size of your roof, and the intensity of the tear off. The price for tearing off the existing material on an average home is $1,000.

How Many Shingles In A Square

So, what exactly does a roofing square mean? Simple, in the same way a scale may mean something to you, but something totally different to a musician, a roofing square is a measure of area that your contractor will take when placing or fixing your roof.

Okay so if a roofing square is a measure of area, how may square feet are in a roofing square? Well, thats also pretty simple. A roofing square is equal to 100 square feet. Whats important, though, is not what amount of square feet are in a roofing square, but how it is arrived at.

Factors That Determine The Cost Of A Roofing Square

Roof pricing is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to:

  • Your homes geographic location
  • Your roofs size
  • Roofing material
  • Material quality
  • Current market for roofing materials
  • Length of warranty after the replacement
  • The contractors experience level and certifications
  • How quickly you need the roof replaced

Figure Out Your Homes Footprint

If you use the square footage of your home, youll only get a vague idea of what the square footage of your roof is. Thats why you have to figure out your homes footprint.

A person of average height will have a stride somewhere between 2 to 2.5 feet. To figure out your homes footprint, you can step off the dimensions of your roof by counting the steps you take to get the length of your home. You will then step off the width of your home.

After stepping off the length and width of your home, youll multiply the two numbers to get your homes footprint.

Length x width = your home’s footprint

Your calculations are going to be off, but measuring this way can give you a basic idea of your homes footprint. Keep in mind, square footage of a house does not equal the square footage of a roof.

Do I Need To Understand Squares And Bundles

How much to charge for roofing per square? | Roofing school | Roofing Insights

If you are completing a DIY roofing job, then all the talk of roofing squares can seem overwhelming and unnecessarily complex. The good news is that your roofing supplier will understand the measurement of squares and will be able to calculate for you how many bundles you need.

Therefore as long as you are able to calculate the number of squares on your roof, you can use this information when ordering shingles. For example, you would just need to ask your supplier to order you 20 squares worth of shingles, and they would be able to calculate this into the equivalent of 60 bundles of shingles.

How Many Squares Make Up A Roof

Determining how many squares make up a roof requires the roofer to take length and width measurements of the roofs surface, including all overhangs and oddly-shaped spots to find its square footage, then divide the total square footage by 100.

For example, lets say the total square footage to be re-roofed is 2400ft2. The roofer will divide this number by 100 to arrive at the final number of squares needed to re-roof the home.

    2400 / 100 = 24 squares

These measurements should be done by experienced roofers, as the different parts of the roof, such as the pitch and dormers, as well as a correction factor, will need to be carefully measured and taken into consideration.

    What About A Waste Allowance

Aluminum standing seam metal roof cost

Its important to note that 10-15% may be added to the final material measurement as trim allowance . The actual amount of waste will be evident once the roof is completed, and if there are leftover shingles, they can be kept to replace any areas of damage in the future. Roofs with more complicated layouts tend to have a higher waste factor than plain gable roofs due to the increased number of unique cuts to accommodate corners, walls and edges.
