What Is A Roof Boot

Types Of Roof Pipe Boots

How to Change a Vent Boot on Your Roof Any Size Pipe

Just like roofs themselves, roof boots can be made out of a variety of different materials.

The most common types of roof pipe boots are:

  • Plastic pipe boots
  • Cooper boots
  • Rubber collars

Each has its own pros and cons that should be discussed with a roofing expert to see which works best for your home and roofing type.

Placement Of Your Boot

Before cutting a hole in your roof, you’ll need to plan the placement of the boot.

Determine the location and footprint of the hole that you’ll need to cut, and make sure the base of the boot is large enough to cover it with room to spare to seal the flange to the roof.

DO NOT CHOP A HOLE IN YOUR ROOF UNTIL YOU’RE SURE THE BOOT YOU HAVE WILL COVER IT!

The boot included with our kits works well for most installations, but not for every conceivable application. It’s much easier to find a solution for a too-small boot without the added pressure of a hole in your roof.

Insulated pipe needs 2″ clearance to combustibles, so for a 4″ insulated pipe , you’ll cut a 10″ diameter circle on a perfectly flat roof. However, if your roof is pitched, you’ll cut an oval with a height longer than 10″.

If you have a boot with a square base, orienting the corner of the boot toward the roof peak can give you a little extra room to cover an oval hole in a pitched roof. Pointing the corner upward will also make it easier for the boot to shed water.

If you have a standing seam metal roof, it’s best to place your roof penetration between the seams. It’s easier to create a good seal if the flange can attach to an entirely on a flat surface. However, if you need to go up and over a seam, that’s also possible.

How To Install Pipe Flashing On Existing Roof

Installing pipe flashing on your roof will help you reduce the potential for water damage and save you a lot of money in the long run. This is a fairly straightforward project. Doing it correctly will ensure a leak-proof structure.

The most important thing you need to know is that the adjacent shingles and flashing must properly fit around the pipe. Heres a step-by-step guide on how to install pipe flashing on an existing roof:

1. Bend back the shingles above and on the pipes sides, without bending the shingles beneath the pipe.

2. Lay the pipe flashing above the vent shingle thats below the vent pipe, right under the top and side shingles you just pried back. Make sure it fits tightly around the roof vent pipe.

3. Hammer the nails into the top and sides of the flashing, but be careful not to go through the shingles. Also, hammer the bottom edge of the flashing and make sure it lays on top of the shingles that are just below your roof vent pipe.

4. Seal the edges of the flashing and all of the nail heads with roofing cement.

How Is The Roof Leak Repaired

To repair this leak the roofer will have to break the seal on the shingle, lift the shingle up, pull the nail out, and move it.

If the nail wasnt driven in straight then theyll have to pull the nail out, drive it in properly, and then lay some ice and water shield on top of it. If the nail worked its way through the shingle, then theyll reseal the shingle as well.

If the , then it’s just a matter of moving the nail over so that it catches the rafter. Then theyll fill the nail hole with some type of cement and reseal the shingle back down.

Why Are They Important

Cougar Paws Roofing Boots

Many roofing materials expand and contract with outside temperature changes. Because of thermal movement, your roof boot can move out of place, peel or crack. When this occurs, water can enter your roof, resulting in leaks. In some cases, leaks are left undetected for a long time, soaking the insulation and causing mold growth. Some of the most common signs of leaks include peeling paint and water stains in walls and ceiling. By keeping your roof boots in good shape, you can avoid unnecessary roof repair costs.

Today, higher-quality roof boots are available, which are made to go with the movement of your roof. However, not all contractors use top-grade roof boots to cut down costs. Keep in mind that these roof boots are bound to fail quickly. To avoid early failure, make sure to hire a reputable roofing contractor.

How Does A Plumbing Boot Work

A plumbing vent pipe that exits through the roof of a home will interrupt the roofs shingling pattern. Most plumbing vent pipes are made of lead or plastic. While plastic is the cheaper alternative, it is also more prone to damage and cracking from wear and tear, especially in areas with variable climates. The plumbing pipe vent is nailed into the roof bed beneath the shingles or roof covering, and the roofing material is attached around the vents base. The plumbing boot is composed of thin preformed metal and a rubber sealing ring that fits over the shingles to form a watertight seal around the pipe vent.

Most residential roofs require plumbing boots because most modern residential plumbing systems require roof vent pipes. If you regularly check your roof for problems, its a good idea to carefully inspect the seal of your plumbing boots to ensure they are completely watertight.

What Is A Roof Boot And Why Is It Important

A roof boot is also known as a plumbing vent boot, pipe boot or pipe flashing. Its commonly made from lead, which is a flexible metal. This is important because it allows the roofing contractor to adjust the base to the roof pitch and bend the top of the boot into the pipe end for a weathertight seal.

Problems With Plastic Boots

Pipe boots being used by many roofers in the Atlanta area these days have a huge problem. The neoprene seals that are meant to act as a gasket around plumbing pipes are dry rotting during the intense summer heat and falling to pieces. When a homeowner contacts us with a leak issue, I can almost guarantee that in most cases, the leak is occurring around the pipe boot.

Another common problem with plastic boots is the actual boot itself can start to curl at the bottom edge and pull up and away from the roof. This curling causes nails to pull out of place and potentially forms roof leaks. Another thing to consider when using plastic pipe boots is the type of plumbing exhaust pipes that exit through your roof. If your home has older cast iron pipes, you will need to use lead boots for two different reasons:

  • The cast iron pipe reacts with the neoprene seal and breaks down the seal prematurely.
  • Cast iron pipes are not smooth-walled pipes, and as such, the neoprene seal doesnt properly seal to the pipe.

How To Install A Roof Plumbing Vent Flashing Boot

Installing a roof plumbing vent is typically an easier task than flashing a chimney. Here is how you do it:

  • Step One: Install shingles as normal up to the base of the plumbing vent.
  • Step Two: Place the flashing or boot onto the plumbing vent, so the base is resting on shingles. Momentarily lift the boot and apply sealant to hold the flashing in place.
  • Step Three: Firmly push the flashing back down into place.
  • Step Four: Install the next course of shingles. When you reach the plumbing vent, allow the shingles to overlap the top of the flashing.
  • Step Five: To make room for the vent itself, cut out a circular piece of the shingles, as shown below.
  • Step Six: To secure the circular edge of the shingle, apply roofing cement beneath it. Ensure you also nail it where you normally would.

Debris In Gutters That Stop Above A Roof

Best Thorogood Roofing Boots

A valley is when two roof slopes meet in a V shape that allows water to flow down a roof freely. When a valley stops in the middle of a roof, it will have a gutter that runs into it so the water can continue flowing down.

The problem is with the fascia, which is the board that runs along the lower edge of the roof that carries all the gutters. When theres no flashing applied to the fascia board, a leak will happen.

This leak wont happen under normal circumstances. It might be under extreme rain, but when that gutter in the valley gets filled with leaves and other debris, itll send water through the path of least resistance.

Once that water gets underneath the soffit , behind the gutter, it can go anywhere it wants, causing all kinds of damage.

Signs Of Plumbing Boot Damage

While metal plumbing boots typically hold up well for many years, plastic plumbing pipes may begin to pull away from the plumbing boot seal over time. Any type of plastic plumbing pipe boot will require replacement as often as every five to seven years in some areas. If you notice any cracks, chips, or pieces missing from the sealing ring of your plumbing boot, its best to contact a reliable roofer as soon as possible to have it inspected and replaced.

Another sign of a problem with your plumbing boot is shingle damage or discoloration around the plumbing boot. If there is a very subtle crack in the sealing ring base, water may have entered the roof below the shingles and damaged the decking. If left unchecked, you may start noticing water damage on interior walls and ceilings below the plumbing boot.

Compatibility With Roof Support Bracket

The Roof Support bracket included in our kits can be installed on the roof below the pipe boot. However, there are other ways to install the bracket. You can install the bracket on the ceiling instead, hidden by the ceiling trim plate. Or you can mount it in the space between the ceiling and the roof. It’s also acceptable to install the bracket upside-down if that works better. Generally, installing the bracket somewhere accessible is best.

If you want to install your support bracket under your boot, check first whether it fits under the boot. Depending on your application, you may need to trim the ends of the L-brackets to get them to fit under the boot flange. If the clamp is interfering with the pipe boot on a pitched roof, you can try orienting the bracket so the bolt is on the high side of the roof. For some installations, you may want to cut the top corner off the clamp with an angle grinder, or you can flip the entire bracket upside-down so the clamp is mostly contained under the roof line.

Why Is It Important

Your roof contracts and expands as the outside temperature changes. As your roof moves, the roof boot can shift, peel up or crack, resulting in roofing issues. When your roof boot shifts or becomes damaged, it can allow water to enter your roof.

A roof leak can allow moisture to reach the vent pipe into your home, resulting in water stains on ceilings and walls of your kitchen and bathroom. High-quality roof boots are made to move with your roof. However, not all roofers install quality roof boots. To reduce costs, some contractors use cheap roof boots, which are likely to fail early.
