Roof surfaces are measured in squares.

A roofing square is equal to 100 square feet of the roof.

To determine the number of squares on the gable roof example in this post, divide its total of 2400 square feet by 100 .

This means you would need 24 squares of shingles to cover that roof. Be sure to add 10%-15% to all your material totals for trim allowance .

Growth On My Roof: Damaging Or Just Ugly

Whats on my Roof? Roof Cleaning Cincinnati

I read about preventing moss and mildew in your Wood roofs article. I have smooth, light green blotches on one side of my roof that isn’t dark and fuzzy like moss. My roof is only 11 years old. Will this stuff harm the roof? If so, can it be safely removed without damaging the shingles? They’re asphalt shingles, not wood.

From your description, you may have lichen growing on the surface of your roof. It’s a combination of algae and fungus and usually has a light, mint-green color. It doesn’t trap as much water against the surface of the roof as moss, but it can be acidic and has strands that can penetrate into the shingles. These are probably not good things for your composition shingles.

A more common type of growth on roofs is, of course, moss. Moss is darker green, much thicker, holds more water, and also grips into the surface of the shingles.

The third most common type of growth on a roof is algae. It doesn’t have the thick growth like moss and lichen and it looks like stains on a roof, usually in streaks of black or sometimes green. In the past twenty years, the black-streaking algae, Gloeocapsa magma, has spread to many roofs throughout all climates, where in the past it seemed limited to mostly warm, humid areas. From my own observations, this algae doesn’t seem to cause any damage to shingles, but it can sure make a quality roof look nasty, dirty and worn out.

    What Is A Flat Roof

A flat roof is almost exactly that a roof that has so little slope or pitch that it appears to be completely flat .

Flat roofs can be made from many types of material, although EPDM rubber or TPO and PVC roofing membranes are the most common, along with tar and gravel, roll roofing, or metal sheets.

There are many advantages to a flat roof you can use it as a deck or patio, for instance.

The outdoor living space can be a wonderful advantage in the spring and summer, or whenever the weather cooperates in your area.

Depending on the details of your property, it may also be possible to partially enclose a flat roof for a penthouse-style private deck.

You can also put heating and cooling units on top of a flat roof, which is a good way to keep them out of the way and avoid obscuring the architecture of your home with that equipment.

Another advantage of a flat roof is the ease of installing PV solar panels, which will improve the energy efficiency of the structure and of course, adding solar makes a flat roof eco-friendlier.

One note, flat roof repair can be particularly complicated if you dont have the right roofing company helping out.

You can also grow a garden on a flat roof, therefore creating a green roof which not only is good for the environment, but also adds an additional layer of insulation and helps make your heating and cooling systems more efficient and cost-effective.

How To Prevent Moss From Growing On Your Roof

The best way to prevent moss from growing on your roof is to minimize its ideal growing environment.

    • Limit shade and clear any debris that could lead to moisture on your roof.
    • Consider trimming tree branches to expose your roof to more direct sunlight.
    • Keep your gutters clean and remove fallen branches and debris.
    • Check your downspouts and make sure they are properly draining a safe distance from your house.

Houses with multi-level roofs are at a higher risk of moss because the gutters on the upper roof often leak onto the lower roof, creating a perfect home for moss.

You can also prevent moss growth by installing zinc or copper coating strips below the top ridge on both sides of your roof.

Zinc and copper are both very toxic to moss. As water comes into contact with these strips and runs down your roof, it takes the zinc or copper with it.

Nowadays, you can install a zinc or copper roof that naturally prevents moss. This type of roof is very rare, though.

Steel roofs cost twice as much as asphalt shingles roofs. Roofs made out of zinc or copper cost two to four times as much as steel.

If you happen to be in the market for a new roof and have a massive budget, ask your roofer about zinc/copper.

You may love to experience the four seasons each year in the Pacific Northwest, but your roof doesnt. Rain, fog, ice, and even shade from large trees can create the perfect environment for moss and fungi to grow.

Moss, mildew, algae, and lichen grow into your shingles and wear away the material. They can even lift shingles. This creates space for water to pool and eventually leak into your home.

Ill go over those today so you can decide whether your roof needs cleaning. First, well talk about how to safely and effectively clean a roof.

How Do You Get Rid Of Black Streaks On Your Roof

Roof algae can be easily removed by a simple roof cleaning.

The important thing to know is that while an occasional cleaning shouldnât harm your roof, doing it yourself may void any roof warranties or homeowner insurance policies you may have.

An internet search on how to clean black streaks on your roof will turn up several different homemade formulas as well as commercial brands for getting rid of roof algae.

Most formulas contain chlorine bleach and/or trisodium phosphate and water. While lye is more effective than bleach, it is corrosive and should only be applied using full protective gear.

âOxygenâ bleach, commonly known as the brand name Oxyclean, can be effective and is less environmentally damaging, but will not work as well as formulas with chlorine bleach or TSP.

Remember that even chemicals that are safe for humans can still kill or harm landscaping and vegetation!

    Cleaning the Roof Yourself

If you decide to clean the roof yourself, never, ever use a power washer, even on its lowest setting. Not only is using a power washer pretty much guaranteed to void any roof warranties, it can damage shingles by causing the protective coatingâor even the shingles themselvesâto come off.

Cleaning your roof will require some preparation. Remove any lawn furniture and cover vegetation and landscaping. Overspray is inevitable, and even if the product you use isnât considered toxic, the runoff from your roof can cause plenty of mess on the ground as well.

Do Not Use A Pressure Washer To Remove Moss From Your Roof

    Whats happening on my roof.

When I noticed moss on my roof, my first instinct was to rent a pressure washer and blast it away.

After a few minutes of research, I quickly learned that you should never use a pressure washer to remove moss or anything else from your roof.

High water pressure can damage your roof by lifting and loosening shingles and washing away the granules, which are the tiny pebbles on each shingle.

Maintaining granules is important because, according to NolandsRoofing.com, they make shingles sturdier and fire-resistant and protect the asphalt coating from UV rays.
