Is A Metal Roof Right For Your Home

Minimum Roof Pitch with Metal Roofing – Metal Roofing 101 with Todd Miller

Metal roofing will keep your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter if you have a roof that is less than 12 inches tall. Even when there are a lot of wear and tear factors, metal roofing systems have a long lifespan. Metal roofs should not be used on all roofs because they are not appropriate in all situations, but they do work well on low-slope roofs. If youre thinking about installing a metal roof, make sure to consult with your contractor to see if it will be a good fit for your home.

What Is A Low Slope

A low slope is a roof with a pitch less than 3:12 but greater than 1/4:12. The minimum slope for lapped, non-soldered seam metal roofs with applied lap sealant shall be no less than one-half unit vertical in 12 units horizontal . Lap sealants shall be applied in accordance with the approved manufacturers installation instructions. The minimum slope for standing seam of roof systems shall be one-quarter unit vertical in 12 units horizontal . Please note that in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, 2:12 is the minimum allowable slope.

Painted products are not as high of a concern since low slope roofs have limited visibility. There are lots of considerations you should keep in mind with low slope roofs since they have a high risk of water intrusion. Generally, water will remain on a low sloped roof for an extended period of time. Due to heavy storms such as hurricanes, the system will become submerged. This requires additional steps to ensure the system remains water-tight.

This type of roof is seen most often on large buildings with long runs . Low slope roofs also come with several complications such as sealing the roof mechanically up to 180 degrees. A low-slope allows for a lower-height building and requires less structural support.

Match Pitch Of Existing Roof

The covered porch roof pitch should match the existing house. Buildings with multiple roof pitches do not appear cohesive. The porch should appear to be part of the structure, not an addition pasted on. If it is not possible to match the pitch of the existing roof, use a pitch that is shallower than the roof do not use a steeper pitch, because the form of the covered porch will overpower or contrast with the main roof.

What Is The Minimum Slope For Metal Roof

The minimum slope of metal roof depends on whether or not you have sealant. A metal roof that has exposed fasteners and seams with sealant is 3:12. Which means 3 inches of drop per 12 inches of horizontal run or just over 14 degrees. For roofs with sealant, this can go even lower at 1/2:12, which is just over 2.5 degrees, and for standing seam metal roofs that are mechanically fastened, this is reduced even further to 1/4:12 or just over 1 degree. But these are just minimum values, and the recorded slope is 5:12 for metal roofs. Many contractors will charge more for under this angle as it is considered a higher pitch.

However, you also need to consider the various types of metal roofing materials and styles to understand the slope for metal roofs better to ensure you are installing them correctly in the right place.

This post looks at some different roofing tips and the pitch for metal roofs you need to consider when installing a metal roof.

Yes, you can use metal roofing for low-pitched roofing. In fact, many contractors recommend that asphalt shingle roofs go no lower than 4:12 slopes, which doesnt leave you with too many options if your roof slope is any shallower than that.

Luckily, metal roof works extremely well in low slope applications. The most common type of metal roofing, and the cheapest, is a typical corrugated roofing with exposed fasteners. Metal panels overlap and the screws are placed through the laps to hold the sections together on the roof.

Some homeowners may cringe at the thought of exposed fasteners putting thousands of holes literally into your expensive roofing material, especially on a low slope. However, this type of roofing has been working for decades as leak-proof as shingle roofing and much more durable.

That standard type of metal roofing can go only slightly lower than a shingle roof, as the max depth for corrugated metal roofing sheets without sealant is 3:12. However, you can go lower without compromising your structure using metal roofing with sealant and other products, such as standing-seam click-lock panels.

Whichever product you choose, you are getting a metal roof that performs the same or better than a shingle roof. For low slope applications, your options for roofing materials are limited, and choosing a metal roofing product for these types of scenarios is a long-term, cost-effective choice.

Metal Roofs Place Fewer Demands On Structure

Typically, low slope metal roof systems vary in weight from 40 to 135 pounds per 100 square feet, making them among the lightest roofing products and the easiest to install. A lightweight roofing system also places fewer demands on a buildings structural support system, an important consideration in earthquake-prone areas.Unlike non-metal systems which require an underlying substrate or deck, low slope metal roofs can be applied directly over bar joists or purlins. And, because of their interlocking or active fastening systems, metal roof panels are designed to meet the requirements of ASTM E1592, UL 580, UL1897 and other severe wind and uplift tests.Metal roofing products come in a variety of materials as well as many colors, textures and profiles. To ensure longer life, almost all low slope roof materials are protected from the elements by high performance, highly durable metallic coatings. While the idea of protecting a building with metal originated centuries ago, the concept is still valid today. Whether the goal is many years of low-cost, low maintenance, problem-free performance, or an environmentally responsible approach to roofing, low slope metal roofs make sense.

Best Roof Pitch For Metal Roof

The slope for these panels should generally be at least 2 inches per 12 inches. Nonetheless, there is clearly a higher slope. The slope of aluminum shingles is measured in inches for every 12 inches. Because shingles have more seams and fasteners, a steeper pitch is ideal, regardless of the panels pitch.

Metal roofs have been in use since the third century BC. They are widely regarded as being resistant to fire, heavy snow, ice storms, and even hurricanes, among other things. Metal roofs can also help you achieve higher energy efficiency due to their high level of solar reflectivity. In metal roof applications, the pitch should be 3 1/2 to 12 inches or higher. When the pitch of the roof is less than 1.5 B, the deck will experience condensation, air/water movement, and condensation buildup. A pitch of no more than 3 inches is required for metal roof shingles and lap-hung nonsoldered panels. Modified asphalt shingles, thermostat shingles, and thermoplastic single-ply metal roofs with low slopes should be installed on metal roofs under 12 inches in height. Minimum Roof Pitch For Metal Roof

One of the confusing parts about roof slope is the terminology used when indicating roof slope. While many of us might remember from high school math class that we measure angles or slope in degrees, the roofing industry prefers a different measurement. Ratios such as 3:12 is the common manner in which roof slope is notated.

Using a simple roof pitch calculator can help you determine the degree of your angle. The minimum pitch for a lapped, non-sealed metal roof is 3:12. That ratio equals just over 14 degrees.

Lapped metal roofs with sealant between the laps can go as low as ½:12, which equals around 2.5 degrees. Standing seam metal roofs have an angle of just over 1 degree. For both of these types of roofing, at their lowest slopes, would be nearly flat.

You can also use geometry to determine the angle if you only have a calculator at your disposal, but youll at least need to know the length of your rafter and have an understanding of the SIN, COS, and TAN buttons on your device.

Snow Load Requirements For Metal Roof

What angle for a Corrugated iron and roof pitch

The slope for the metal roof should always consider snowfall in the area. If you live in an area with heavy snowfall, you should pay attention to the minimum pitch for metal roofs to avoid any compromise.

The minimum recommendation for heavy snowfall areas on a metal roof is 1:12. If your home is likely to be sitting under a few feet of snow for the winter, then a lower pitched roof might not be able to maintain a watertight seal.

While this recommendation will protect your roof and your home, if you need a lower slope roof, there is something you can do. Firstly you need to avoid end laps and use more extended-length panels. End laps typically dont have a sealant, and long end laps in heavy snowfall areas can lead you to experience moisture-wicking activity where moisture is leaking into your home through gaps. Alternatively, you can raise the slope of your roof using a system of purlins. Purlins are horizontal supports that you affix to your existing roof. You then attach metal panels, creating an air gap between the metal roof and the new substructure. The use of purlins can help you increase your roof slope and can even be used on existing metal roofs.

What Is The Code Required Minimum Pitch/slope For A Metal Roof

Monday, September 16, 2019

The traditional metal roof types, such as 5V-crimp and corrugated, are rated by the manufacturers for use down to a 3/12 pitchthree inches of vertical rise for every foot of horizontal run. Because of the shallow height of the undulating ridges of the 5V and corrugated profiles and the use of exposed metal fasteners to screw the metal to the roof deck, they are limited to a slope that will shed rain quickly.

But the taller profiles, like standing seam and PBR , can be installed on roofs with as low as 1/4 or 1/2 in 12 pitch. Their fasteners are either concealed or screwed at the top of a ridge, which makes them less likely to leak.

Heres the citation from the 2017 Residential Edition of the Florida Building Code for minimum slope of metal roof panels, and the Internation Residential Code is similar. But the manufacturers installation instructions and minimum slope always trump the code.

The right roof pitch ensures your home has a safe roof for a long time. This article explains all the ways in which the roof pitch affects your home, and it will help you choose the right pitch for your new roof.

According to our roofing experts at BRH Enterprises, most homeowners believe that the pitch and slope are the same. The truth is, you cannot use these terms interchangeably because they are not the same.

We will start by explaining roof pitch and how it differs from the slope.

Recommendations For Successful Metal Roof Installations

Successful metal roofing systems require proper attachment procedures, provisions for expansion and contraction, and expedient removal of water from the roof surface.

The aesthetic value of metal roofing is increasing its popularity with the architectural community. The use of metal is growing in schools, shopping plazas, churches and municipal buildings. In addition to aesthetics, a standing-seam metal roof system when properly applied can provide long-term waterproofing protection. Successful metal roofing systems require proper attachment procedures, provisions for expansion and contraction, and expedient removal of water from the roof surface.

Metal roof systems are composed of metal panels which are typically fabricated from 22- or 24-gage galvanized metal or aluminum and batten-fill insulation. The metal panels are anchored to the structural components with fasteners or clips. Roof clips are secured to pre-punched holes in the supporting structure. This is advantageous because it assures proper alignment of the panels and allows for movement of the panels without causing damage to the roof system.

The batten fill insulation is applied at the underside or interior side of the panels and is attached directly to the panels. Some manufacturers offer composite panels that sandwich insulation between two factory-fabricated panels.

Can You Put A Metal Roof On A Low Slope

Just about any type of metal roofing panel will work with a 3:12 roof pitch or greater. However, when the pitch drops to a 2:12 or even a 1:12, you will have to use the right metal roofing panel profile. Low slope roofs are more susceptible to water damage because they do not offer much steepness for rainwater to runoff. If the water sits on the roof surface for too long, it can penetrate the roof, resulting in leaks and expensive repairs.

To avoid any potential damage, using the right metal panels that have maximum weathertightness is critical to having a successful metal roofing system on a low slope. Its also critical to use an experienced installer on low sloped roofs as this type of metal roof will be more susceptible to leaking.

Why Is A Porch Called A Porch

The word porch is derived from the ancient Greek and Roman term portico, referring to an exterior structure often attached to a building that, although providing access to the outside, is sheltered. Importance Of A Roof Pitch

The chief reason for having a roof pitch is to redirect water and snow away from the roof and avoid any percolation that might result from stagnation of water on the roof.

As standard practice, places with heavy rainfall or snow storms will have higher roof pitches compared to places that experience less rain and snow.

Other than directing away water and snow, there are still a number of reasons as to why the pitch is such an important component and should never be ignored in the design and installation of any roof type.

It will dictate a number of other roof features such as the roofing material to be used, the architectural properties of the roof, the walkability on the roof and the roof sections to be covered. The pitch also affects the economic aspects of the installation.

For instance, steep pitches lead to more roofing material being used. In turn, this will result in a higher roof installation cost.

So here is a summary of our advice about the lowest pitch for standing seam zinc roofing.

  • Make your pitch 5 degrees minimum if you possibly can it will save you stress later.
  • If you cant make it 5 degrees and you want to take the pitch down to 3 degrees, consider the following:
  • Specify a seam sealing tape between the seams. This will mitigate any capillary action, but it wont prevent it entirely.
  • Try and find some more height in your construction you might only be looking for 100mm.
  • Consider an alternative product. How about single ply membrane with seam profiles? If you cant do it in metal, we can do it in membrane. Membrane is cheaper, looks great and doesnt have the restriction in pitch it can go down to one in 40, which is 1.4 degrees!
