How Much Underlayment And Other Materials Will My Roof Need
Roofs not only have shingles, but also felt underneath the shingles and ice and watershield in the valleys. You can get 15 lb felt or 30 lb felt. Both types are generally $20 per roll. 15 lb felt covers 4 squares per roll, and 30 lb felt only covers 2 squares, so youll need double the amount of rolls if you use 30 lb felt.
We have some advice from a professional roofer on selecting the proper underlayment . When it comes to asphalt saturated felt paper, there is only one true 30 lb UL. It is made by Tamko and it is called Tamko Underlayment 30 lb felt. It typically needs to be specially ordered. Regular 30 lb felt is a UL 15 or 16, just as regular 15 lb felt is typically a UL 8. GAF Shingle Mate lays nice and flat and is one more Branded Component needed to meet warranty requirements.
If you have a 30 square roof and go with 15 lb felt, it will cost about $160. If you use 30 lb felt, it will cost approximately $320.
Ice and watershield underlayment is installed in the valleys of a roof for extra protection. An average roof needs about 2 rolls of ice and watershield. Each roll costs about $50, so total cost of ice and watershield is $100.
Most homeowners are having new ridge vent installed on their home now. The average home needs 60 feet of ridge vent. Ridge vent comes in 4 foot sections for $10 per section. After doing the math, ridge vent on a home costs $150.

How Many Squares Per Roll Of Underlayment
The roll size depends on the type of underlayment product. Synthetic underlayment comes in 10 square rolls, while regular #15 felt comes in 4 square rolls.
So for the 24 square roof example, you would need 2.4 rolls of synthetic underlayment, or 6 rolls of regular #15 felt.
- 24 squares ÷ 10 squares per roll = 2.4 rolls of synthetic underlayment
- 24 squares ÷ 4 squares per roll = 6 rolls of regular #15 felt
Remember: Add 10%-15% for the waste factor on underlayment, as well.

How To Account For Shingle Wastage
There will always be a certain amount of wastage when constructing a shingle roof, but this can vary hugely depending on the shape of your roof and any extra features it has.
For a complex roof with lots of corners, you can expect to go through more wastage and offcuts of shingles compared with a simple roof. Roofs with dormer windows or skylights will also have more wastage compared with those that dont, as you will need to make more cuts in the shingles, and the leftover portions will be unusable.
For any roofing project, you should buy between 10 and 15 percent more shingles than you have calculated. So for a roof that measures 20 squares, you should buy an additional 2 or 3 squares to account for wastage. This is because 10 percent of 20 is 2, and 15 percent of 20 is 3. If you are ordering your supplies in bundles, then this will mean you will want between 6 and 9 extra bundles, based on the fact that there are 3 bundles in each square.
Although this might seem like needless extra expenditure, you dont want your project to be delayed if you run out of shingles and cannot get hold of more of the same ones immediately. It is always safer to have more shingles than you need as opposed to less.
If you have shingles left over at the end of your project, you should save them for future repairs or replacements on your roof, so you wont have to have mismatching shingles.
How Many Bundles Of Shingles Do I Need For A 10×12 Shed
To calculate the amount of shingle bundles needed for a 10×12 shed, you first have to calculate the square footage of the roof.
Lets say this shed has a gable roof running parallel to the long end of the shed. The shed also has a roof overhang of 1 all around. Therefore the length of one side of the roof is 14.
The pitch of this roof is 4:12. A rough estimate of the width of one side of the roof is just a bit over 5 say 53, which is 5.25 feet. Add a foot of overhang and you get 6.25. Multiply this by 14
Multiply the two and you get 87.5 square feet. Multiply that number times two and you get 175 square feet your total roof area.
Now you need to find out how many bundles of shingles is required for 175 square feet of roofing. Divide 175 by 100 to find out how many squares of roofing you have. This equals 1.75. We know that each square of roofing requires 3 bundles of shingles, so 3 bundles of shingles times 1.75 roofing squares equals 5.25 bundles of shingles.
You still have .25 of roof leftover. It would be prudent to purchase one extra bundle of shingles to ensure you cover your entire area and to replace any damaged shingles in the future.
Thus, it takes 6 bundles of shingles to properly cover the roof of a 10×12 shed with a gabled roof and a 1 overhang around all sides.

How Do You Calculate The Weight Of A Bundle
We already know that a bundle of shingles constitutes 1/3 of a roofing square. So, our 800-square foot roof would need 24 bundles of shingles .
If were talking about standard three-tab shingles, which weigh between 60 and 80 pounds per bundle, then we can determine the weight of all of the shingles on the roof. The weight of 24 bundles of 3-tab shingles would be between 1,440 and 1,920 pounds .
That total weight also depends on another factor: layers. Most local building codes allow for two layers of shingles on roofs with a 4/12 pitch or less and up to three layers of shingles or more sharply pitched roofs.
If youre installing a new roof over an old one, multiply the total weight of the shingles for the entire roof by the number of layers.
So, in our example above. An 800-square foot roof with two layers of 3-tab shingles would weigh between 2,400 and 2,880 pounds.
Other factors can also influence weight. Shingles that are more worn out and have lost a significant amount of their grit will weigh less than newer shingles.
How Do You Calculate How Many Shingles To Buy
Measure the actual surface area of your roof rather than basing your calculations on the homes square footage. Roof pitch and elements such as gables and dormers will affect the amount as well. Use a simple roofing calculator to get a rough idea of square footage. For a more accurate picture, use a roofing calculator that can take all of these peripheral factors into account or consult with a roofing contractor.

How Much Roofing Underlayment
Up till now, we were discussing how to measure roofing shingles for re-roofing. When talking about a new roof, the same amount of square footage is required for the underlayment.
You will find underlayment in rolls of four squares each. In order to determine how many rolls of underlayment you would need, you need to divide the number of squares for 2 planes by rolls of one square.
- Rolls of underlayment required: 280 sq. ÷ 4 = 70 rolls
If you are applying the shingles over an asphalt roof, then you dont need underlayment.
Pro Tip: In order to avoid any delays in installment due to shortage of shingles, add 10% to the total material requirement for trim allowance.
How Much Does It Cost To Tear Off A Roof
The next thing you need to consider when totaling the cost of a roof replacement is the cost of tearing off your original roof. This depends on the company you hire, the size of your roof, and the intensity of the tear off. The price for tearing off the existing material on an average home is $1,000.

Cost Of Shingles At Home Depot Vs Roofing Supplier
If you are planning to install the shingles yourself, you may be wondering whether you can save money by buying them at Home Depot rather than a roofing supply store.

How Big Is A Square In Roofing
The calculations above will give you the total number of square feet of the roof area.
As you have noticed in the roofing industry however, the surface of the roof is being measured in squares. This refers to the roof area that measures approximately 100 square feet.
Therefore: 1 Square in Roofing = 100 square feet
Now, in order to determine how many squares are there on the gable roof for example, all you need to do is divide the total square footage by 100.
- Total square footage from Example 2 above: 28,000 sq. ft.
- Number of squares for 2 planes: 28,000 sq. ft. ÷ 100 = 280 squares
This means that both planes of the roof will require 280 squares of shingles. A three-tab shingle, which is most commonly used, is packed in 3 bundles per square.
