How Much Should A Metal Roof Overhang

A metal roof should overhang the eave end of a roof 1 to 1.5 if you have gutters. If your roof does not have gutters, your roof can overhang up to 3. A minimum overhang of 1 is always recommended to prevent rain and other moisture from blowing up under the metal roof edge.

You should not overlap the rake ends of your roof with your metal panels. While some overhang is acceptable on the eaves, you should never overlap rake edges as too much surface area of the panel would be exposed to wind and you would risk the panel failing in extreme weather.

Lean To Shed Roof Framing

A lean-to roof just means its attached to an existing structure. The high end of the rafter sits on or attaches to a ledger plate attached to the existing wall. The lower end is done the same way a Skillion or shed roof is. Notch a birdsmouth where it sits on the low wall and extend it past the wall for the eaves.

Install The Starter Strip Shingles

The fifth step is to install a row of starter strip shingles. Starter strips are used to help the first row of shingles that sit over the drip edge to stick to the roof without having nail heads showing.

They can be purchased pre-made or you can make them from the regular shingles you purchased to install on the roof. Since most sheds only need a few starter pieces it is typically more economical to cut the starter strips from shingles.

To make a starter strip from regular shingles you will flip a shingle over and cut it lengthwise along the tar strip just above the tops of the factory made slits. Cut enough singles to run along both eves of the shed.

Secure the rubber membrane to the roof using gaffa tape if the membrane tries to move out of position.
