List Of The Cons Of Black Roof Shingles

How Does Metal Roof Paint Wear Out? Chalking And Fading

1. You dont have the option to reflect sunlight.Since black roof shingles absorb the energy from the sun, you lose the option to reflect the sunlight to create a cooler attic. Thats why you dont often see darker roofs in warmer climates. It can lower a homeowners heating bills in a northerly climate, but it raises the cooling bills of someone who lives closer to the equator. If you have concerns about how much youre paying to stay comfortable already, then youll need to compare the light vs. dark option to see which one would work best for your home.

2. Some black roof shingles might not have a longer lifespan.Although some manufacturers say that their comparative studies of light vs. dark shingles saw no difference between the two for the products overall lifespan, there is some information that disputes this notion. Heat does increase molecular activity, so that means the hotter temperatures that black roof shingles run at play a role in lifespan reduction. If UV rays play a bigger role in the length of your investment, you come out behind there still too.

If you want to maximize the lifespan of your new roof, then a correct level of attic ventilation is necessary to support your shingles. If you have enough soffit vents, then you can pick whatever color you prefer.

Smaller houses almost always benefit from lighter tone roofing shingles. The brighter colors help the structure appear larger as it draws attention to the positive features of the home.

Cleaning your roof regularly and reapplying a protective roof coating helps to keep your roof from fading, rusting, or leaking over time. Refinish black metal roofing with a rubber, elastomeric, or clear thermal defense roof coating every 5-10 years.

Why Does Paint Fading Matter

The paint on your customers metal roof or wall isnt just for decoration. In addition to providing color, the paint finish also protects the panels from corrosion, temperature, moisture and other detrimental environmental elements. Fading is the most common source of color change over time and happens when environmental elements deteriorate the paints pigment . This deterioration also reduces the paints effectiveness in protecting metal panels.

Paint fading is measured by the American Society of Testing Materials Hunter unit standard, which compares the faded color to the original. In accordance with ASTM Standard D2244, one Hunter Unit is equal to the smallest amount of change visible to the naked eye.

Why Do Metal Roof Colors Fade Over Time

The color of a metal roof fades overtime because the chemicals in the paints pigments start to break down from excessive exposure to the sun. While UV rays are a major contributing factor that causes fading, other factors include moisture, salty air, chemicals in the atmosphere and pollution.

Your roof also will not fade evenly if one side of the roof receives greater exposure to the sun than the other. The side that is more often in the shade will look more vibrant than the side that is more often in the sun.

Do Metal Roofs Attract Lightning

This is a myth. Many people assume that because metal conducts electricity, it also attracts it. This really isnt the case, and many instances have been documented where lightning has struck trees or other high objects located near metal roofs rather than the roofs themselves. Just the same, metal roofs should be grounded by a lightning protection company.

If a metal roof does get struck by lightning, it will disperse the energy and be far less likely to burn than a wood roof.

Metal Surfaces Reflect Heat

Metal reflects radiant heat from the sun, minimizing midday heat gain. This reflective characteristic means you save energy needed for air conditioning during the day. In fact, federal rebates are offered for metal roofing that has appropriate pigmented coatings that meet EnergyStar requirements. You can get a 10% tax credit up to $500 .

Regarding the insulation value of metal roofing in both heat and cold: Though the material itself is low in insulation R-value, metal roofing can be applied over foam insulation that has very high R-values. What Color Roof Is Best For Resale

Consider Curb Appeal For Future Re-Sell Value.

Roofs with good resale value tend to be neutral colored, such as tan, cream, brown, black or gray. These colors are classic and tend to stay in style over time. Trendier roofs include shingles that are mixed, with various color combinations of browns or blacks and grays.

How Should Fading Affect Your Metal Roof Color Choice

When you have your heart set on a particular color for your metal roof, fading might not be enough of a reason to change your mind. While fading is inevitable on any metal roof, even experts in the paint industry have noted that fade is ultimately not a deciding factor in the color people choose.

However, its important to know the risks and keep in mind, especially if the aesthetic of your roof is a top priority for you.

A roof is less likely to show fading when:

  • The panels are in a PVDF paint system.
  • The panels are in a lighter, inorganic color.
  • The panels are in a matte finish.
  • The roof does not receive excessive sun exposure.
  • The roof is not located on the coast.
  • The roof does not receive excessive moisture

Remember that fade is covered by most metal paint warranties. How long the fade warranty is for varies depending on the manufacturer. For everything you need to know about paint warranties and fading we recommend reading:

Pros And Cons Of Metal Roofing

I’m thinking about selling my 30 year old home and building another one. My current house has always had asphalt shingles and I like the look of them. My wife wants a metal roof on the new house and I’m inclined to go along since the type of house we’ll be building will go well with even simple ribbed metal roofing. But since I’ve never had a metal roof I was hoping some of you could share with me your opinions, experiences and thoughts on metal as a roofing material.

I am particularly interested in how easy it would be to repair a metal roof should a limb or something similar fall on it and put a hole through it. I also wonder what precautions one would use should they ever need to climb the roof for some reason. It seems to me if someone was on the roof they would have to be mighty careful not to dent the material.

Are metal roofs as carefree as they would appear to be? Does the color fade over time. Any brands that have exceptionally good or bad reputations?

Anything at all you care to tell me about your experience or knowledge of metal roofing would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

You Should Avoid Walking On Metal Roofs

Though you shouldnt have to walk on a roof that doesnt leak, there may be occasions when a plumber needs to snake out a vent pipe or a chimney sweep needs access to the chimney flue. You have to be very careful when walking on most metal roofsboth to avoid damaging or denting the roofing and to keep from slipping off.

You can walk on some metal roofs but not all of them. Whether or not they will dent from foot traffic depends on how the particular product is made and the type of construction supporting it. As you might imagine, metal can be very slippery when wet.

Some painted metal roof finishes can peel, chip, fade, scratch, or chalk, although nearly all premium products are guaranteed for at least 30 years. Walking on some types, particularly those with a granulated-stone surface, may cause surface wear. Installers must be careful not to scratch or dent the roofing during installation, and panels must be treated with care. Unlike conventional roofing, some metal shingle systems are installed from the top down, eliminating the need to walk on them.
