Canvas Shade Sail For Patio Roof

How To Build Small Covered Patio Roof And Concrete Floor – Do It Better Yourself And Save Money

Simple yet elegant. This canvas shade makes a pretty good roof for the patio. It does not only accentuate the patio which gives it a more exquisite look, but also protect you when you feel like to enjoy the view of your backyard.

This patio roof features curtain tracks that are attached on each of the beams. They allow you to adjust the canvas shade as you please.

You can draw the canvas back to get natural light or close it so that the patio will be completely covered.

Install Some Riser Brackets For More Height

If you wish to reach a specific height, you can lift the roof of the patio with some riser brackets. The patio roof which is raised with some brackets requires a custom barge cap.

It will not only allow you to raise the ceiling up to 2 feet, but also give various splendid options for the finishing look and relaxed ambiance.

You can go with opaque twin wall sheeting if you want to get some natural light for your patio.

Opaque twin wall sheeting that is installed between the roof of the patio and the barge cap allows natural light to pass through.

If you are not really into natural light and want to block it, you can infill the gap between the patio roof and barge cap, and seal the rear opening.

To get a cleaner and nicer look, you can add some extra flashing wall covering. After that, you can seal the brackets from the front.

Budgeting For Your Rooftop Deck Cost

A contractor may bill around $1,000 in labor fees for your new deck. But if your patio has a number of site conditions that add complexity to the project, such as a very elevated floor or a complicated design, they may charge a higher price for their work. Additionally, you may need to hire an architect to consult with your contractor as well. And that means another several thousand dollars tacked onto your totalaround $5,000, on average.

Diy: Turning A Concrete Slab Into A Covered Deck

Covered Patio Ideas for the Best Investment

Posted on Published:

Ever thought about turning your concrete slab into a covered deck? Its definitely doable! Here are some thoughts, tips, & photos from our experience!

Well, this post has been a long time coming. We completed our wood deck covering for the front of the house back in the spring of 2017, and published that post at the same time I actually started this project, which was a much larger undertaking! Shockingly to me, that post about turning a cement porch into a wood deck has become one of the most popular posts here at Catz, and Ive had a number of people ask for this post about the back deck. My plan was to publish it last summer, but it ended up being a surprisingly busy season for us, so here I am shooting for this spring!

An idea began to develop, and after sketching it out and doing some research, we decided it was plausible a peaked, 12-foot, clear roof to cover the new deck. It was certainly going to be a little more complicated than a straight, slanted roof, but we thought the potential benefits were worth it. At 12 feet, it would be high enough in the center to feel open and airy, while the clear roofing would let lots of light through during the many, many gray days here in the Pacific Northwest. That was the idea anyway

Selecting Materials To Build A Patio Cover

While looks are important, you want to make sure that the materials fit the structure. Since my patio cover was going to have a slight slope, shingles were out. A tar roof would work, but it would be a heavy smell like a BP oil spill. I decided on corrugated metal roofing because its resistant to high winds, is lightweight, and is structurally sound.

Using corrugated metal also allows me to reduce the degree of slope, or roof pitch needed to a mere 10 percent, or a 1-to-10 pitch. This meant the patio cover could start at the edge of the houses roof at a height of eight feet and slope down to seven feet, leaving a clearance of more than six and a half feet between the lowest part of the frame’s headers and the ground at its outer edge.

Outdoor Kitchen And Patio

The average cost of adding an outdoor kitchen to your patio ranges from $7,000 to $20,000. Outdoor kitchens add function to your patio area. They are great for entertaining and prevent children and guests from constantly entering and exiting the house during the warmer months. Outdoor kitchens come in many shapes and sizes. They can be simple and have only a few appliances or fully fitted to include barbecues or pizza ovens. They can be built of the same material as your patio for a cohesive look.

Awnings As Deck Coverings

Deck Over A Flat Roof

Awnings are one of the most versatile covering options for a deck. They are available in a wide range of colors. You can also choose between retractable or permanent awnings. The retractable ones typically cost more. In general, you should expect to spend around $1,000 to $4,000 depending on size and other factors. You can hire a professional contractor to handle the project or save around $1,000 by taking a DIY approach.

    Tips For Purchasing Materials

  • Be flexible. I had originally planned on using 4×4 beams and joists, but local codes wouldnt allow for them, so I used 10×2″ headers and 6×2″ joists, which worked out just fine. Also, be prepared to modify your plan at the store when youre getting your materials, as doing so can save you money. For instance, I chose drywall screws instead of nails because, for some reason, they were less expensive, and they wont try to work themselves back out after a few years. Another substitution I made was choosing three- and four-inch deck screws instead of framing nails. Although more costly, they hold much better than framing nails outdoors.
  • Shop around. Shopping around for the best prices for materials was absolutely necessary. In the same town, in an area of fewer than 10 miles, the difference in prices was enormous. Total material costs ranged from $2,200 down to $800.
  • Beware the store associates. Some are aggressive and want to push customers into an insane buying frenzy, bringing up a storm of confusing nonsense that somehow equates spending more to saving more. The lumber store I bought from had an associate who simply made sure I bought the correct materials for the job by looking over my plan and suggesting shorter screws for the joist hangars and a lower grade of lumber for the areas of the patio cover that would not be exposed to the weather. The associate also arranged for delivery, which cost $25.
  • How To Build A Patio Cover With A Corrugated Metal Roof

Does a Covered Patio Add Value to Your Home?

Learn the basics of building a patio cover with a corrugated metal roof.

One of the simplest and most affordable ways to add some shade and cover to your outdoor space.

One of the most basic and cost effective ways to create a great shady covered area for your patio space is a patio cover made with a corrugated metal roof.

The corrugated metal is inexpensive to purchase, lightweight to install, and provides a sturdy way to keep both the rain and hot sun off your patio.

The corrugations naturally channel the water downward along the slope of the roof either into a gutter or into the landscaping, much in the same way a sloped patio channels water away from your foundation.

    Gable Patio Cover Cost

The cost of a gable roof or patio cover averages $2,200 to $13,500 for the roof. This makes the total cost range for the patio $3,928 to $18,900. Gable patio covers come in one of two ways. They can be attached to your home, at least on one end. They can also be freestanding pavilions, a type of structure with a roof but no walls. Depending on the height and material of the gable cover, it has a wide range of costs.

What Type Of Patio Cover Do You Want

The next choice is the type of patio cover you want. If you want a solid cover, do you want a cover that allows light to enter the patio or a cover that blocks sunlight. Both polycarbonate and Colorbond roofing will protect against rain, but polycarbonate can be used on a patio that looks like it has no cover.

Polycarbonate may be a good choice for a timber patio structure because you can have the best of both worlds: a structure that looks open, but provides shade and protection from the rain and reduces UV rays. If you want full shade, Colorbond may be a good choice because it provides full shade, but don’t skimp on the price. Some Colorbond roofing is insulated, which will reduce heat transfer and help reduce noise from rain.

Polycarbonate roofing costs* between $38.00 for a 2.4 metre length to $68.00 for a 3.0 metre length of insulated roofing that blocks virtually all UV rays. The least expensive Colorbond roofing costs around $18.00 per square metre and goes up to $21.50 per square metre for powder coating. A good choice for a patio is Colorbond that is powder coated on both sides, which will cost around $24.00 per square metre or if you live near the coast, Colorbond Ultra may be a better choice because it resists saltwater corrosion. It is a more expensive option, costing around $36.50 per square metre.

    Wood Patio Cover Cost

A wood patio cover averages $15 to $35 a square foot installed. Wood is a very versatile material. This allows you to create a wide range of different looks and styles for your patio. The wood can be formed into a lattice, pergola, gazebo, or any cover type. There are many wood types to choose from as well. Some are more costly but longer-lasting. Each also has its own color and grain pattern to consider.

How Much Does A Diy Patio And Patio Cover Cost*

How to build patio roof and post

If you’re handy with tools, you can purchase a DIY patio and build it yourself. A Colorbond DIY kit will cost* around $1200 for a small, basic model and can go up to $3600 for an insulated patio and patio cover. If you want a gabled roof, it may cost as much as $6200 for a 5.5 metre wide by 7.2 metre long kit.

Timber kits are also available, but their prices depend on the type of timber used, the complexity of the design and the size of the kit. Other cost considerations will be the type of roofing material and products not included in the kit.

Think about the design and size of your patio first and decide whether you want full shade or light to transfer through the patio cover. Don’t forget about heat transference. It may be better to spend more on a patio cover that is insulated so you can feel comfortable in the patio even on the hottest days and the insulation will help dampen noise from rain. You can also use a combination of materials or choose different colours of Colorbond to make the patio more appealing. For more ideas, visit our Patio Idea pages for photos of hundreds of patios.

    Building The Patio Cover

I realized, too late, of course, that I didnt take a good before picture for this project, but the above step 1 shot will do the trick, I think. You can clearly see the concrete pad we had to work with it measures about 12 feet deep , and about 24 feet long. It was also slanted, in order to guide water away from the house, but I did not realize how slanted it was! Chels said she had always noticed the dramatic slant , but upon measuring it, I found it dropped a full four inches from the house to the grass! Four inches over twelve feet was much more than I bargained for when I was drawing this project up on my notepad, and I knew that compensating for it was going to be a fair amount of work

The first part was relatively simple. Before erecting the 4×4s, I cut the ones closest to the house down about four inches so that the tops of the posts would be level front to back. I attached plastic post anchors to the bottoms of the 4×4s, and then secured the plastic post anchors to to the concrete using my hammer drill and nail-in concrete anchors. The plastic posts do a couple of things for you first, they make it easy to mount, erect, straighten, and level the 4×4 posts. Secondly, they keep the post itself elevated off the concrete just slightly, so the post base will never be sitting in water as time goes on.
