How To Determine Roof Pitch
You will also need to know the desired pitch of the roof. Pitch is the slope or angle from the wall plate to the roof ridge line. Pitch can vary a great deal, from a shallow slope up to a very steep pitch. Pitch for a gable roof, the most common, is generally 1/4 or 1/3 which is equal to 1/4 or 1/3 the total span of the building, not counting any overhang. Pitch also has its own denotation, determined by the rise in inches in 12 inches. For instance a 4/12 pitch denotes a roof rising 4 inches for each 12 inches. Having the correct pitch is important. In many instances, a certain pitch may be necessary or even required by local codes. Pitch is determined by snow loads, other weather factors and the covering to be applied to the roof. For those in the northern parts of the country, an 8 in 12 pitch, or more, is commonly used to keep excessive snow loads off the roof. Those in the southern climates may utilize lower pitches. The minimum pitch, however, that can be used with many roofing materials such as asphalt shingles or corrugated metal is 3 in 12 . For lower pitches, a built-up or continuous roll roofing must be applied to keep the roof waterproof.

Determine How Deep To Cut The Birdsmouth
The birdsmouth should sit on the wall not exceed 1/3 of the depth of the rafter if it extends past the wall. The code usually requires a minimum of 1½ of the rafter sitting flush on the wall. Use a framing square to help lay out the notch based on the slope of the roof. A 2×4 wall with a 2×6 rafter can be notched for a 4 seat.
For our 4×8 lean-to example using a 2×4 rafter, the depth of the birdsmouth is limited by the 1/3 depth of the rafter rule: so about 1-3/16.

Hangers Rafters And Fascia

Start at one end of one beam. Mark the inside face of the beam at 16-inch intervals from end to end. Attach two-by-eight joist hangers onto the face of the beam at each mark, using 1 1/4-inch hanger nails at each of the machined nail holes on the hanger flanges. Ensure the upper end of each hanger is even with the upper edge of the beam. Repeat this step and install joists hangers at 16-inch intervals on the inside face of the opposite beam, starting at the same end as the first beam.

Start at one end of the beams, and measure the distance between the inside faces of the beams at the first hanger. Move to the opposite end of the beams and measure the distance between the inside faces of the beams at the last hanger. If the measurements are the same, plan to cut all of the rafters the same length. If not, measure for each rafter individually as you proceed.

Cut the first rafter from two-by-eight framing lumber. Ask the assistant to help install the rafter in the first pair of joist hangers at the end of the beams. Secure each end of the rafter with hanger nails at each of the machined nail holes at both sides of the hangers.

Repeat the previous step to measure, cut and install each rafter at corresponding joist hangers.

How To Scribe Mono
In this video I just want to quickly show you how you can mark out the position of your birdsmouth on a skillion or flat or what else they call a mono-slope mono-pitch roof.
Heres my top plate as you can see. This is the low end weve extended this end up, however as I said in our previous video this is not the best practice.
Best practice would be to construct this wall at full height to start with.
But anyway, thats what Ive got so the next step is to throw up your piece of timber making sure its a little bit longer than what you actually need.
Then all you need to do is to scribe up where the timber meets the plates. In this case, Ive used a ruler but theres no reason why you couldnt use anything with a straight edge. A straight piece of timber or a spirit level would be preferable because youll be able to make sure that its plumb.
If I zoom in you can see Ive just come up straight off the plate straight up, and that will give me my what we call the plumb bevel and I can just draw a line up there as far as I need depending on what height I want my Birdsmouth to be. Thats it as I said a spirit level would be good because you can check that its actually plumb and presuming this wall is plumb then I can just simply set my ruler on my plate.
And remember were repeating these steps down at the bottom end as well, and we get our check out for our birdsmouth cut out.
Then we have ourselves a pattern rafter for this skillion roof.

Find The Length Of Common Rafter On A Shed
A common rafter refers to all the rafters that are identical in a specific roofs construction. Once you make a pattern rafter, all are cut to match. To find the length of a common rafter, you can use a construction calculator, a free online calculator, or some junior high math involving the Pythagorean formula.
The horizontal distance from the ridgeline to the outside of the support wall is the run, in feet. The desired slope is the rise over the run, multiply the run in feet by the desired run, and you have the total rise in inches. Convert so both are either in feet, or in inches, and use the formula and do the mathtwice, to make sure. + , then find the square root of the combined numbers, and you have the rafter length from ridge to wall.
For our 4×8 lean-to example, the total rise is 1-foot and the total run is 4-feet. 1×1+4×4=17. The square root of 17 is 4.123-feet, or 49.477-inches or 49-15/32+/-.
