Should You Install Heat Cables To Prevent Ice Dams
Heat cable has its place in the world, but I usually dont recommend it to my customers, for a few reasons.
Heat cable, heat tape, heat wiretheyre different names that mean the same thing. Theyre hot wires that run up and down your roof to melt snow and prevent ice buildup on your overhangs and in your valleys.

Heat Cable Problem #1: Its often a Band-Aid.
Heat cable doesnt fix the root cause of the problem: too much snow on a roof thats overheated because warm air is leaking into your attic.
90% of the time that problem is fixable, and it all starts with a quality home energy audit from someone who understands insulation, ventilation, and ice dams. Youll probably be urged to seal up spaces where warm air is sneaking into your attic like around light fixtures, outlets, etc. These areas that allow air-leaks into your attic are called attic bypasses. Your energy auditor may also tell you to double down on your insulation, or to improve your ventilation, or both
Heat Cable Problem #2: Its an energy-drainer.
Even very good heat cable may add about 20% to your energy bill all depending on how often you power it on. Thats no better on your wallet than it is on the environment.
Heat Cable Problem #3: It melts snow that can just refreeze.

Which Heat Cable To Use For Ice Dam Prevention
As I described in great detail in Part Two of my ice dam prevention series, there are only two classes of heat cable one can use for ice dam prevention: Constant Wattage , or Self-Regulating . We install Heat Tape Pro exclusively, but Raychem Winterguard is another excellent self-regulating heat cable our installers have used in the past. To a large extent, it doesnt matter which cable system you use as long as it is self-regulating and made by a reputable company. The limitations of constant wattage systems far outweigh their only advantage, cheap prices.
Ice Melting Systems For Roofs
After your roof accumulates a large amount of snow, sunlight and changing temperature naturally induce the thawing process for it. While the melted snow water easily travels down your roofing material to your gutter, some cold spots on your roof can often stop this melted snow in its tracks.
When this happens, the melted snow water freezes again. Over a short amount of time, this cycle can turn the frozen water into small ice walls or ice dams. Since these ice dams are made of solid ice, they are tough to break and problematic to keep on top of your roof.
Along with adding excess weight at the edge of your roof, these ice dams also stay true to their name and block melted snow water from passing through. This causes problems such as roof leakage and sagging from standing water.
With heating cables for roofs and gutters, you no longer have to worry about these walls of ice. After these systems are installed on your property, their emanating heat can prevent any ice dams from forming at freezing temperatures. From cold spots to water blockage, this system addresses all associated problems of ice dams in an effortless way.

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Installing A Roof Heating Cable
Had some roof work done last year after mother nature abused my house by way of an errant tree branch. I had always suspected my roof had poor ventilation, most notably when I wound up with a 200 lb chunk of ice going from roof to ground , so when the roofing contractor repaired the roof I had him install a ridge vent and ventilation system along the back wall .
Anywho to make a long story even longer, it’s winter here and I’ve got some ice dams in the gutters and icicles hanging off the roof. When spring rolls around I’m considering putting up a roof heating wire along the gutter and up the first 5-6 feet of roof on both sides of the house. I’ve heard various pros and cons from friends and family about these heating wires and just wanted to get opinions from the fine folk here as to what they think of this system.
I live in the “snow belt” region of Ohio . So if you live in a similar area or know someone who does I’d love to hear your point of view.
I’m a contractor in Maine and we certainly have a lot of experience with ice dams. An ice dam can be the quickest way to force water under the roof shingles even on a roof in good shape.
I have had mixed results with heat tapes. When they are used properly, they can be somewhat effective. Most folks expect to see a nice bare zig zag pattern along the edge of the roof with the ice gone around the tape. Not how it works!

Run zigzags to create 15″ wide triangles, running the cable from the overhang to the warm area of your roof. Secure the roof cable with brackets, affixed to each shingle where the roof cable bends. Roof Clips For Heat Cable System
The type of clip you will use for your roof and gutter deicing system will depend on the roof material on your home. The vast majority of heat cable is installed on standard asphalt shingles making the roof clip choice simple. The Grip Clip is the clip we use for all of our installations because it eliminates the need to drive nails or screws through your roof system. It also installs in about three seconds without the use of tools. We still use traditional nail-on clips for the installation of heat cable on rubber and metal roofs. Installers apply a dot of adhesive to the back of each clip before securing it with a nail or screw. We allow the adhesives to fully cure before installing the heat cable, a process that can take a few days or weeks depending on variables such as the roof material and the outdoor temperatures.

The Physics Of Ice Dams
Ice dams occur because snow and ice on the roof melt due to the home’s interior heat. When this mass travels down the roof, it freezes again as it reaches the colder exposed overhangs or eaves. Over time, the frozen melt-off can build up into a dam barrier that causes ice and water to back up under the shingles. Inside the home, the dripping water can damage the interior ceiling and wall surfaces. Additionally, the sheer weight of ice dams may damage the roof overhangs and gutters.
How To Install Metal Roof Deicing Cables
The first step is to ensure that you have the proper length of cable for your heated metal roof. A WarmlyYours account manager can help you figure this length out. Then, make sure the roof, gutter and downspouts are free from debris, leaves, pine needles or any combustibles. Double-sided tape pads can only be applied to roofing materials at temperatures above 40°F .
When attaching cable in the gutter, use clips every 10 feet. For roof valleys, run the heating cable two-thirds of the way up and down the valley. Add this additional length to the overall cable length.
Add clips before and after each downspout. Because metal roofs may have damaging snow slides, it’s recommend to put in a single pass of heating cable up and down the seam to return to the gutter section below.
Install end seals and power connections before turning on power. The heating device should be connected to weather-resistant, non-heating leads.
After installation is complete, turn the circuit breaker on to give power to the cable. Standing water in the gutter should feel warm within one hour. Adding snow guards on the roof to prevent sliding of snow above can minimize other damages to the roof or gutters below.
