Things To Consider Before Buying A Metal Roof Paint

How to paint a metal roof and building

Buying a high quality and durable paint for a metal roof can be difficult since this is not the same type of paint you would normally apply to the interior of your house. It requires to have some important characteristics that give the metal surface of the roof long-lasting protection against water and heat from the sun.

Well, we understand that not everyone is well-versed in metal roof paint shopping. So, to help you in this endeavor, we have prepared a list of the factors to consider before buying a metal roof paint:

How To Paint Your Metal Roof

Now its time to start painting. Follow these steps to ensure it will look beautiful for years to come:

  • Choose a nice day to paint Fair-weather days in the fall or spring will usually be your best bet. Metal roofs can get very hot during the summer, and its always tricky working on a roof during the winter.
  • Apply a coat of primer Use a paint roller or brush to apply a thick coat of primer to the entire surface of your roof. Work from a ladder whenever its possible. Wait at least an hour for the primer to dry.
  • Apply the paint Once the primer is dry, apply a coat of paint to the entire surface of the roof. Again, at least an hour for the paint to dry. Then, apply another coat.
  • Painted Galvalume Panels Offer More Long

Some manufacturers offer a rust-blocking coating called Galvalume, which mixes aluminum and zinc. Aluminum is highly resistant to corrosion. The aluminum will stop any rust that may occur in the zinc, and the steel will remain intact. After a small amount of edge-rust, Galvalume offers up to four times the protection of comparable options. Galvalume is also offered in three common levels of protection: AZ35, AZ50, and AZ55. The higher the number, the thicker the layer of aluminum/zinc that will protect your metal.

When selecting Galvalume, choose the thickest coating of aluminum/zinc for the most rust blocking.

Design And Color Of Your Home

11 Benefits of Painting Metal Roofs

Depending on the design and color of your home, the color of the metal roof should be aligned. For example, if your outdoor house paint and the roofs color do not match, it will create a bad display of aesthetics.

Therefore, it is important to study the outdoor of the house and its color and then carefully pick a color that will complement and enhance the overall look of the house.

Rust Blocking Is A Balance Of Substrate Coating Type And Thickness

Manufacturers use one of two different rust-blocking coatings on metal panels, galvanized or Galvalume®. Your metal panels will have one of these two coatings applied between the steel core and the paint layer. If the paint is scratched, the rust-blocking coating is designed to prevent rust from reaching the steel core. Your 40-year warranty refers to paint only. Manufacturers may include a separate substrate warranty depending on the rust-blocking coating you choose. Ask the supplier if your quote includes a separate warranty for the substrate coating.

How To Paint A Rusty Metal Roof

If you live in an area with a lot of tree coverage, then no other roof can match a metal roof for its ability to shed leaves, twigs, water, and more. But like all metal items left out in the elements, metal roofs are susceptible to oxidation and rust. Once rusted, a once beautiful metal roof now looks haggard and old.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, then youre probably wondering what can be done to refinish your roof and make it look new again, short of actually redoing the roof. A new roof could be quite expensive, so whats the alternative?

Luckily, you can breathe new life into your old, rusted metal roof. Its going to take a bit of work and a few helpful products, but it can be done. Lets take a look at what well need to tackle this job and the steps well have to take once our supplies are gathered.

Painting Metal Roofing 5 Mistakes to Avoid

This paint, too, like the previous mention, comes in a big container of 5 gallons. Manufactured by the trusted name Jetcoat, this is one product which you can rely on. The paint is specially formulated to be acrylic and waterproof. After applying it, you wont have to worry about heat rays warming up your house anymore.

Besides having the capability of reflecting sun rays, the paint also protects the roof for years. Its long-lasting security saves you from the tension of repainting the roof every other year. And not just metal roofs, you can also apply this paint on other types of surfaces, such as polyurethane foam, wood, asphalt, and so on.

However, you should avoid applying it on some selected materials, like gravel and shingled roofs. Another great thing about this paint is that by just using 1 gallon of it, you will be able to cover 50 to 70 square feet of space. But this only applies for situations when you apply a single coating.

It is recommended that you apply two layers of coatings to obtain maximum protection. Lastly, it provides a rubber membrane-like texture on the rooftop, protecting it from scratches and all harm.

How To Prepare A Corrugated Roof For Painting

For a smooth application, you need to ensure the roof space is correctly prepped and ready. The very first step to this is:

  • Cleaning
  • Before applying any paint, you must give your roof a thorough clean, removing all possible traces of grime, grease, oil, rust, debris and dirt-build up. For this, you can simply use a brush and mild cleaning agent. Mix 1 tablespoon of dish soap with 1 gallon of water in a bucket to create a soap solution. Then, hose down the roof surface with clean water and dip a brush or rag into the solution and begin scrubbing. Remove the dirt, then rinse the metal using the hose once again once finished.

Alternatively, you could also use a high pressure power washer, then use a brush to finish off any tough areas.

    Mould & Mildew

To tackle areas of mould and mildew, use a wire brush with a solution of chlorinated bleach and warm water. Always remember to wear adequate protective gear such as a breathing mask and gloves when working with bleach. Carefully read manufacturers instructions and research the products you are using to ensure they are safe for purpose.

    Rust

Rust is not uncommon on metal roofing. You can easily remove surface rust by scrubbing with a wire brush and sanding with 80 grit dry or wet sandpaper. Any leftover rust can be neutralised by coating the section in a rust inhibitor.

  • Degreaser
  • If your roof is less than a year old, first treating with a metal degreaser will help the paint bond better to the surface for a higher-quality finish.

Wipe The Roof Down With Vinegar

Because corrugated metal roofs are made with a galvanized coating to prevent corrosion, the paint is going to need some help if we want it to stick. So, we need to neutralize the zinc with an acid. Were going to use white vinegar since its completely natural, inexpensive, easy to find, and completely harmless to you.

Apply some of the white vinegar to a rag. Then, use the rag to wipe down the roof. You dont have to scrub hard, just lightly apply the vinegar to the entire roof. Be sure not to miss any areas!

    On The Safety Of Work

    • General recommendations relate to weather conditions: you need to start working in dry windless weather both heat and frost complicate the process.
    • Work at heights must be done in shoes with anti-slip soles, and also with the use of a safety belt.
    • It is necessary to use protective clothing not exposing skin to the paint.
    • It is better to work with a partner who will help in case of a dangerous situation. It is worth remembering that fumes of paints and varnishes are toxic, and the paints and solvents themselves are fire hazard.
    • Work with the rust solvent must be carried out in goggles and rubber gloves.

Can You Paint Over A Rusted Metal Roof

Painting a Metal Roof. Painting with an airless paint sprayer.

The obvious first question is: can you paint over a rusted metal roof? It would be extremely convenient if all you had to do was slap a new coat of paint onto that aging, corroded old roof.

Well, you can but its going to take a few more steps than just painting it and calling it a day. Before we can even think about painting, were going to have to do something about that rust.

First, we need to remove as much of that rust as possible. Next, we need to prevent the corrosion from continuing to expand.

To take care of the first step, removing the rust, were going to need to physically attack the rust and remove as much of it as possible by force.

For halting the rust in its tracks and ensuring that it wont continue to eat through our new coating and degrade the existing metal any further, were going to use a special primer with a rust killer built-in. Once coated with the rust killer, the oxidation will no longer be able to grow and weaken your roof.

Painting Metal Roofing: 5 Mistakes To Avoid

    • Written by Justin Stewart on Jan 20, 2010To ensure our content is always up-to-date with current information, best practices, and professional advice, articles are routinely reviewed by industry experts with years of hands-on experience.Reviewed by Charles Ramos, Jr. on Nov 06, 2019

When painting a metal roof, there are common mistakes that novices and even experienced DIYers tend to make. Chief among them is treating the metal like any other roofing material. Metal roofing requires specialized paint. Here are some of the most common mistakes made in painting metal roofs.

    Using Leftover Paint

Some people painting their roof with the same type of paint as used with the rest of the home. However, this could be a problem, because the roof is made up of different materials than the rest of their house. The paint you used for wood or even fiberglass will not work well on metal.

There are also some benefits to special metal roofing paint that needs to be taken into account. These paints are made with special qualities, and they may be heat or fire-resistant or even insect and pest-resistant. Internal paints may not have these properties. Water-resistant metal roofing paint, for example, can be of great value if you live in a rainy area. This is why when you are considering painting your metal roofing, it makes sense to go for specific paints for the metal roof.

Where Do You Buy Touch Up Paint

You should never go to your local hardware store and purchase touch paint. Its a different type of paint than whats on your metal roofing panels. Instead, contact the metal roofing supplier and they can supply you with touch up paint.

If youre not the original property owner and dont know who supplied the metal building. You might be in luck, sometimes metal roofing suppliers will sell touch up paint on their website. Always verify the color match and whether its appropriate for metal panels.

Dicor Rpcrc1 White Epdm Rubber Roof Coating

#RoofPainting or repainting your house roof prevents the ...

The ninth entry on our list is a rubber roof coating from Dicor available in the color white. This one, too, comes in a container measuring 1 gallon. It provides the most perfect coating on a rooftop and protects its shine throughout the year, whether there is intense heat or a heavy shower.

This paint is a good fit if you are going for retrofit installations. Not only this, but it will also fix any problems you are having with the roof, for example, a rumble issue. But it is worth mentioning that the paint is more suitable for rubber roofs than metal ones. And the best thing about this paint is its formulation contains a special primer.

The primer consists of a cleaner and an activator, which is capable of prepping the roof properly before any paint is applied to it. On top of this, it gives the rooftop an acrylic coating, which elongates the lifeline of the thick rubber membrane. Also, it helps to block out harmful UV rays throughout the year.

Not just UV rays, but heat energy is also reflected away from the roof due to this paints excellent protection. As a result, the interior of your house will remain cool even if the sun is shining brightly. It is recommended to apply the paint in two coats.
