How The Calculator Works
To get the most accurate results, you will need to provide the exact building measurements and roof pitch.
Very Important Note: Before you order your metal roofing panels, you will need to get on the roof and physically measure its run, to the exact number of feet and inches. REMEMBER that the calculator provides only an APPROXIMATE length for your roof panels. If you do not measure the exact length of your roof run, your panels may come out too short or too long. If your panels are too short, they may be unusable. We are not responsible for the accuracy of any measurements on your part.
When measuring your metal roofing panels, always measure from the eave all the way up to the ridge line, and add at least 2 inches for drip edge and return lock.
Measuring your roof you will need to use a tape measure to get the width and the length of your roof. You will also need to calculate your roof pitch, and properly identify your roof type. Use the following guides, which will help you to accurately measure your roof:

Tear Off Your Old Roof
Before your new metal roof can be installed, your old roofing materials need to be torn off to get to a clean deck. What this means is that your roofing contractor will go section by section removing old roofing materials and tearing off your old shingles from the roofs decking.
Starting on the end furthest away from the dump trailer, theyll start using special tear-off forks to tear-off your old roof by sections. While one crew is going from section to section tearing off, another crew is making sure the torn off materials end up in the dump trailer or the tarped landing zone in your yard.

More Options For Standing Seam Systems
Striations or Stiffening Ribs
Striations, also called stiffening ribs or rib rollers, are the patterns rollformed into a metal roofing panel between the seams. These can be used to assist with the installation of a metal roof, to help reduce the visibility of oil canning, or just for curb appeal. In fact, we recommend using striations in standing seam panels, some available options include:
- Flat No indents between the seams
- Striated Small consistent indentation lines in the panel
- Ribbed Shapes or indentations between the seams
- Pencil Circular panel indents
- V-Ribs V shaped panel indents
- Bead Longer, rectangular panel indents
Thicknesses
The metal coil that is rollformed into panels comes in many different thicknesses however, standing seam panels are typically somewhere between 22 and 26 gauge, with the most common Galvalume® thickness being 24 gauge and aluminum between .032 and .040 inches.
Larger Roofs Can Lead To Larger Problems
The next picture shows that those problems can be multiplied when the roof is larger. Not only was the transition flashing not done, but the outcome was far worse due to the size of the roof. You can see the oil canning due to the stress on the panels and the inability of the panels to move freely because they were not terminated at the transition and properly flashed. Just plain UGLY! Definitely not the right stuff. We do not know which company was responsible for this roof.

Lock The Ridge Capping Into The Z Bar
Once the Z bars are installed, your standing seam metal roof will be ready to lock in into the ridge capping or transition metal. Ridge capping is the trim installed at the peak where the two slopes of a roof meet. On your standing seam metal roof, it will be the same type and color as your metal panels.
If your panels are coming from a low slope roof to a steeper slope, youll need transition metal instead of ridge capping. The transition metal should come down the roof and out 6 inches to ensure there’s a straight plane all the way across and then lock onto the Z bar.
Once your ridge capping or transition metal is installed, your metal panels will be completely locked in, and youll have your new standing seam metal roof.
Standing Seam Metal Roof Installation Process
Step 1 Installing the drip edge
Installation of the drip edge is usually a rather simple process, but for a novice roofer it can be a challenge. Ill take a step back to the first part of this guide when prepping your deck, make sure that the old drip edge is completely removed, and all rotten wood is replaced.
There are several opinions as to whether install drip edge under or over the underlayment. In theory if you install drip edge over the underlayment, then run-off rainwater may get underneath it. In reality, metal drip edge gets installed so tightly, that water just rolls over it. Therefore, I always install underlayment first, and then go over with the drip edge.
Advantages of installing drip edge after the roofing underlayment has been installed, are as follows: You do not waste any precious time during the installation of the drip edge when and if your roof is open and it rains, you may not have enough time to cover it, thats where having water and vapor barrier in place really comes handy. Second reason is the safety.
When I install underlayment, first I can trim the edges as I please, in case that a hang off portion of the roof is too lengthy. If your drip edge is already in place, and underlayment hangs off it, trimming it may be rather dangerous, while sitting on the edge of the roof.
If rainwater does get onto the underlayment after a metal roof has been installed, then you have bigger problems to worry about!

Advantages Of Exposed Fastener Metal Roofing
LESS EXPENSIVE One of the most significant benefits to choosing exposed fastener metal roofing is that its less expensive, especially when compared to standing seam systems. There are many reasons for the lower price, including:
- Wider panels
- Fewer metal panels need to be purchased.
- Less labor is needed because the wider panels cover the roof faster.
NO SEAMING REQUIRED Exposed fastener systems do not require hand or mechanical seaming the two panels. Most systems use a lap seam where the edges of each panel overlap the one adjacent to it and are then fastened down together at the same time. This is often why exposed fastener metal roofing tends to be considered the less labor-intensive option when compared to standing seam metal roofing.
Whats The Difference Between Each Type Of Standing Seam Panel
Each Standing Seam panel is installed and secured to the roofs substrate differently. Their names each reflect the different ways they come together.
Mechanical Lock panels are mechanically fastened to one another, meaning a special tool called a seamer is needed to lock them together. These panels use a clipped system that fastens them to the substrate. Then, you use an electric or hand seamer to press them together mechanically, which bends each panel over one another and creates a lip. Mechanical Lock panels require a more advanced installation.
Mechanical Lock
Tru Snap metal panels have two identical female legs and snap together. With Tru Snap, the male leg is clipped, and that clip is fastened directly to the decking. These panels require more parts and pieces, making installation a bit more difficult. However, Tru Snap can be run with longer panels due to the clipped system it uses, which allows the panels to move more freely through expansion and contraction.

Nail Strip metal panels also have two identical female legs. The big difference is that with Nail Strip panels, the male leg has a perforated nail flange used to fasten the panel directly to the decking. Nail Strip is a bit easier and more straightforward when it comes to installation, however it is limited by how long you can run the panels since theyre screwed directly to the decking.

Your standing seam metal roof comes with a 30-year paint warranty on the Kynar 500 finish. Even though the paint has a 30-year warranty, it doesnt mean its going to disappear after 30 years.
As long as its properly installed and your attic is adequately ventilated, theres no reason you shouldnt get at least 30 years out of your standing seam metal roof. Under the ideal conditions, a standing seam metal roof could last for 50 years.
