Tape The Leaking Metal Roof Hole With Gorilla Tape
Gorilla Tape is a brand of adhesive tape that is geared to repair emergency leaks such as drainage pipe, gutters including roofs! Its such an amazing tape that can work even on wet conditions. This method works on smooth surface. Metal roof is best for this.
Its one of the easiest thing to use. Plus, the UV protective back that it has allows it to withstand under the sun for some time.
Heres how to fix the leak with a Gorilla tape under the rain:
1. Prepare yourself
Get yourself well equipped before fixing the roof leak. The tape got your back but its raining outside. Things can get slippery and dangerous. So, get your rain coat, safety ladder and non-slip shoes on.
2. Get up the ladder
One good thing about metal roof is that sometimes, it can be easier to identify the source of the leak. Get up the ladder carefully and approach the leak area of the metal roof.
3. Put on the Gorilla tape to seal the hole on the metal roof
You can rip the Gorilla tape without scissors! How cool is that considering how durable this tape can be. Without the need to bring a scissors up, thats basically means its so much safer for you.
So, rip out a decent strip of Gorilla tape and put it on the roof. Try to rub out the moisture under it. And, youre done!
Note that this is just a temporary fix for your roof. Gorilla tape is strong and sturdy but that doesnt mean it will last forever. Get a roofer to fix your roof the proper way.
Make Note Of Water Leak Area
Follow the pool of water upward. The drip area on the ceiling is usually obvious and remains even after the drip has dried up. Water travels downward, seeking the path of least resistance, though sometimes with a circuitous route. If the drip area on the ceiling is widespread, mark its outline with a pencil. Test areas that are not visibly obvious with the moisture detector.
How To Fix Ridge Vent Leaks
Ridge vents are exhaust vents that run the length of your roof and exhaust hot air from the attic in summer weather. They most often have a rounded top and some type of spinning element to help circulate air. You need to look in your attic after a heavy rain and see if you have leakage anywhere along the length of your roof. If you see dampness or water leaking into the attic along the ridge, you need to inspect the specific area of the leak from the roof side. You may have some flashing that has become loose or torn and is admitting water during heavy rains.
If the entire vent is leaking, you can install special ridge vents that prevent heavily driven rain coming in sideways. They commonly work by increasing the height of the flashing preventing rain from entering the vent. Alternatively, you can try to solve the problem by installing a taller ridge vent flange along the entire ridge. Another option is to install ridge vent closure foam to stop heavy water droplets from entering the vent.

Take Care Of Things Inside Your House
If you notice a leak during heavy rainfall, immediately get a bucket and place it underneath the leak to gather water. By doing this, you minimize the chances of water finding its way underneath the flooring and on any furniture close by.
In case water from the roof spills on the floor before you can place a bucket, all you have to do is quickly dry up the areas with the help of a towel. However, make sure you do slip or fall.
Next, figure out where the roof is leaking from. The wet parts will be a shade or two darker than the rest of your roof. Once you find the leak, take a few pictures to show your roofing contractor. This will make it easier to determine where the problem is and what needs to be fixed.
Immediate Steps To Take
If youve found yourself in a situation, where your roof has started to leak in heavy rainfall, here is the best way to keep your belongings protected and prevent further damage.
1. Contain the Leaking Rain Water
First, you want to grab a bucket or pot to catch the falling water. Keeping the water contained in a single area will not only make cleanup easier, but it will save you money. If you can prevent major damage to your flooring and most of your walls, the cost of your repairs will be much lower.
2. Move Electronics and Furniture
Next, move your electronics and your furniture. Its common for the water from a roof leak to seep down the walls of your home, where your electricity is running. Unplugging and removing electronics from the room will prevent your roof leak from turning into something much more dangerous. Also, this is a good time to move any large furniture you want to protect from the rainwater.
3. Drain Any Water Pockets
If you notice a wet bulge in your ceiling or wall, you likely have a pocket of water forming from the roof leak. To prevent any further damage to the structure or interior of your home, you need to drain these pockets. Get a bucket or something ready to catch the water, then use an ice pick or screwdriver to poke a small hole in the wall to allow water to escape.
4. Dry and Ventilate the Area

Cracked Or Broken Seams
Many flat roofing systems include a membrane.
The membrane can come in the form of TPO, EPDM, PVC, Modified Bitumen or some other type of roofing product.
Most membrane products come on a roll and are installed in long sections.
Each seam is welded together using heat and adhesives.
Weld seams are a common place for membrane leaks, because they can separate.
Heres an example.
The cause of separation may be due to poor installation.
Wind causing the membrane to lift, bellow and flex.
The membrane could split from hail strikes or simply old age.
Whatever the cause of weld seam separation on a flat roof, it leaves a gap for water to leak through.
Try To Find The Exact Location Of The Leak
While this task can be a little tricky, you can always ask help from a licensed roofer. If you want to do this job yourself, you can use the watermark, which helps identify the problems exact location.
Some causes of roof leaks include plumbing-related issues or faulty airconditioning systems.
While its raining, you can also try to look at your roof if its possible and if the weather is not too severe. You can most probably spot the source of the leak using this method.
Another potential culprit could be your gutters, especially if they are clogged. Clogged gutters can cause the water to buildup and result in water finding its way through your roof.

When Should I Call A Professional
The moment that your roof begins to leak during heavy rain, you will want to troubleshoot the situation and make a quick patch until the rains have passed. After the rains have passed, you can inspect your home for any leaking spots. At this time it is highly recommended that you call a professional roofer to come out and inspect the roof.
If you are not sure where the roof leak is, contact a professional to do an inspection using thermal imaging. They can find the temperature differences in the roof and walls and know which area the leak is located in.
Fixing Water Stains On The Ceiling
Your best bet for removing a slight stain on the ceiling caused by water damage is, oddly enough, more water. Youll want to mix an equal ratio of water and chlorine bleach together in a bucket, and then use a sponge to wash the stained area fully with the mixture. Afterwards, you may want to add primer and a coat of paint to the area.

The most important part of your roof is the flashing, which is found underneath shingles. If the flashing is damaged, you can damage your roof and cause leaks. This is especially true on the roof edges.
Flashing is an adhesive material that creates a watertight barrier at pressure points. It is usually made from EPDM. You should fix flashing issues as soon as possible.
The most common leaks on your roof are caused by roof penetrations. These can be anywhere on your roof, including around vents, chimneys, and other constructions. They can be caused by loose or missing nails, exposed fasteners, or even missing shingles.

How Big Of A Problem Is A Leaking Roof
What happens if you dont repair your leaking roof?
First of all, the water can damage the attic or rooms on the highest floor and all the items in these rooms. This is especially devastating since these are the spaces where you typically store valuable items or family keepsakes.
A leaking roof can also lead to mold and mildew if left unattended to. These may cause serious health problems, especially to people with respiratory problems such as asthma and nasal congestion. Mold spores might also trigger allergic reactions, which can lead to severe health ailments. Even if you and the rest of the household have no health problems, you cant say the same about future guests in your house.
Aside from damage and mold, theres also fire hazard involved. A leaky roof may lead to a fire threat from shorted wires. This can be the most devastating side effect of a roof leak and is one reason roof leaks should be taken very seriously.
The most common problem caused by a leaking roof is damaged rafters and wall framing. This may sound trivial and even an easy fix to some people, however, this is a problem that gets worse and worse and more costly the longer it lingers.
While it may take time for a leaking roof to lead to such consequences, you dont want things to escalate. The costs will only increase over time if you dont do anything about the issue.
