What Is Roof And Gutter Deicing And Why Do You Need A Heated Metal Roof

While metal roofs are usually better at handling snow load, ice dams, and icicles build-up, they are still not an alternative to a proper heating cable deicing system.

Ice and snow accumulating on the roof, inside your gutters, or in the metal roof valleys can cause costly water damage to your home or business.

WarmlyYours Ice Shield Roof & Gutter Deicing Cable System provides a reliable solution for ice damming that occurs on metal roofs, especially in the problematic areas like valleys, dormers or simply when the pitch is not steep enough.

Ice build-up on roofs and in drains can result in hazards for personnel and equipment. Processes that generate heat during winter conditions can often result in significant ice build-up over doorways and on rooflines that can cause structural damage.

Drexan HeatTracer MultiTrace products are ideal for maintaining gutters, downspouts and roofs free of snow and ice buildup on buildings and other structures. MultiTrace is designed to self-regulate its heat output by tailoring its current flow to ambient conditions in the most extreme climatic temperatures. This cable can be cut to length in the field allowing for quick and easy installation.

Drexan HeatTracer products

  • Serve the most demanding environments including hazardous and non-hazardous areas, as well as areas where corrosive exposure may be of concern.
  • Are certified to CSA , UL standards for use throughout North America, ATEX for Europe, and are suitable for both metal and non-metal pipes, tanks and vessels.

The integrity of a trace heating system depends upon on how accurately the cable is selected and how well it is installed. An improperly designed and installed trace heating system could result in cable failure and possible physical injury.

Buying Guide For Best Roof And Gutter Heat Cables

Harsh winter conditions can be tough on people and pets. From dangerously icy sidewalks to salted roads when driving in snow, winter is a common time for injuries and damage to vehicles.

Winter weather is tough on your home, too. One of the most dangerous situations is one that you cant easily see: an ice dam. An ice dam may form on your roof when temperatures bounce back and forth from above freezing to below freezing.

As the ice dam forms, it may be hidden under a pile of snow, so you cannot see the damage its causing. Fortunately, you can reduce some of the issues associated with ice dams by using heat cables on roofs and gutters. The heat cable prevents ice from forming, allowing the melting snow and ice to find a runoff path into the downspout and away from your home.

If you live in an area with snow and ice in the wintertime, investing in a heat cable now can save you costly repairs in the future. We can help you find a heat cable that meets the needs of your home.

Roof And Gutter Heat Cables Prices

Heat cables for roofs and gutters have widely varying price points, primarily depending on the length of the cable. To simplify comparisons, calculate the cost of each cable per foot. This allows you to fairly compare prices of an 80-foot cable with a 90-foot cable.

To further compare products, pay attention to the length of the cold lead. With a lengthy cold lead you pay a little more, but you also potentially avoid the extra cost of an extension cable.

Inexpensive: Inexpensive heat cables that have only basic features may cost $1 to $2 per foot for cables of less than 50 feet in length. For cables with lengths greater than 50 feet, you may pay $0.50 to $1.50 per foot for a basic cable.

Mid-range/Expensive: Heat cables with plenty of extra features have a higher cost per foot. For cables of less than 50 feet of length, expect to pay $2 to $4 per foot. Beyond 50 feet in length, high-end heat cables range from $1.50 to $3 per foot.

If your heat cable doesnt ship with the clips needed to secure it to the roof, youll need to spend a few extra dollars for this hardware.

What Happens When You Dont Use Gutters And Downspouts With Electric Heat Trace

EasyHeats ADKS Series Electric Roof De-icing Cable

Keeping snow and ice off your roof takes more than just designing and installing the correct electric heat trace system. Having proper insulation in your building and correctly installing gutters and downspouts are just as important in keeping your roof safe from snow and ice damage.

Many times, building owners will make the choice to not invest in gutters and downspouts with the view that the electric heat cable will just melt the snow and ice and the water will then freely run off the roof and on to the ground below.

Unfortunately, that is not the case as you can see from the pictures below.

What happens is that the heat trace does melt the snow and ice that it comes in contact with but then as the water begins to runoff the roof it changes temperature quickly to back under freezing and will cause ice to form beginning just under where the heat trace ends. Therefore, it is critical to have a robust gutter and downspout system as our systems also include lining the gutter and downspouts with heat trace in order to assure that the water can freely move down and away from the building.

Mother nature dumped a lot of snow around the Boise area this winter and it created lots of issues. A ice damn was starting to develop on my roof that caused concerns. Once I installed this product, the ice damn was no longer an issue. Great product. Highly recommended.

This is the first time using this type of product and it seems to be working well. We got a lot of snow so far this year and you can see where it is melting it off the roof. It isnt real hot so it takes a while to melt through thick snow in which it keeps the ice build up to a minimum. But all in all its doing its job. I will buy a longer cable next time. It doesnt reach as far as you think it will due to the wavy pattern that it must be laid.

I purchased these for an investment property, mobile home roof that had issues with ice damn on the north side. We have had a mild snow so far and the cables clearly melted the snow around them and helped run the water off the roof.

LEP can design and specify an electrical heat tracing system to prevent ice dams from forming on roofs and gutters of residential homes and commercial buildings to prevent building damage. Ice dams can cause water ingress into a roof, physical damage to the structure, or a safety hazard due to ice falling onto unexpected pedestrians below.

There are several ways to create effective solutions to eliminate ice dams – from laying the heat trace cables directly in gutters and downpipes, to the traditional zigzag pattern that is installed on the edge of the roof line, to the newer technology of inserting heat cable into metal panels that can install on the roof itself or under the shingles of a roof. These systems are effective on all different type of roof styles including flat roofs, sloped roofs, shingled roofs, membrane roofs, and standing seam roofs.

Most of the systems are installed with self-regulating cable along with a thermostat or control unit that can measure both temperature and moisture. This provides maximum energy efficiency because the system operates only when necessary and the cable automatically adjusts its power output to compensate for temperature variations. Many of our deigns have been used for commercial buildings since we incorporate state-of-the-art control systems and connection kits as part of our design service making these systems ideal for buildings in light to heavy snow load areas.

Don’t Miss: How To Repair Epdm Roofing

    Roof & Gutter Heating

Freeze and thaw cycles create ice dams that can quickly damage or even destroy roof coverings, gutters, and downspouts. Pooled water behind the dam may leak into the building, causing water damage, or climb over the ice-filled gutter, forming icicles. The resulting water damage to your homes interior can be many times more expensive to repair than the roof or gutter itself.

Warmup provides self-regulating electric cables for the roof and gutter heating, that automatically adjust their power output to compensate for temperature changes.

The self-regulating heating cable is ideal for both commercial and residential use. A full range of controllers, sensors, and accessories is available, guaranteeing the optimal solution for the roof and gutter heating.

What Is The Best Deicing Cable For Heated Metal Roofs

What is the Best Deicing Cable for Heated Metal Roofs?

There are two different kinds of heating cables for roof and gutter deicing systems: self-regulating and constant wattage. However, only self-regulating cable can be used for heated metal roofs because constant wattage cables are not approved for that kind of application.

So what is self-regulating heating cable? Its a unique and energy efficient type of heating cable that has a special conductive core between two bus wires. This core becomes more conductive during cold ambient conditions therefore the heating cable will increase its wattage per linear foot in response to the cold.

This feature makes it ideal to help protect the perimeter of your roof from ice dams and for keeping gutters clear of ice formations in the winter. This type of cable will also decrease its power output , in warmer conditions, when the higher temperature will make the special core less conductive, which helps limit wasted energy.

How To Install Metal Roof Deicing Cables

The first step is to ensure that you have the proper length of cable for your heated metal roof. A WarmlyYours account manager can help you figure this length out. Then, make sure the roof, gutter and downspouts are free from debris, leaves, pine needles or any combustibles. Double-sided tape pads can only be applied to roofing materials at temperatures above 40°F .

When attaching cable in the gutter, use clips every 10 feet. For roof valleys, run the heating cable two-thirds of the way up and down the valley. Add this additional length to the overall cable length.

Add clips before and after each downspout. Because metal roofs may have damaging snow slides, it’s recommend to put in a single pass of heating cable up and down the seam to return to the gutter section below.

Install end seals and power connections before turning on power. The heating device should be connected to weather-resistant, non-heating leads.

After installation is complete, turn the circuit breaker on to give power to the cable. Standing water in the gutter should feel warm within one hour. Adding snow guards on the roof to prevent sliding of snow above can minimize other damages to the roof or gutters below.
