Why Is Draining The Roof Important
There are several reasons for this, including:
- As already mentioned, pooling water can lead to leaks and structural damage.
- Twigs and debris can accumulate on the roof.
- The debris and twigs can damage the tar and caulking on the roof.
- In winter, there will be excess damage caused by freezing conditions and ice.
- There will be leaks near features too, like the chimney or heating and cooling units.
- Plantlife may be encouraged to grow.
- Bugs and mosquitos could be attracted to the water.
How Do I Stop My Roof Leaking In Heavy Rain
If your home is built on a roof that was designed to handle heavy rain, dont be surprised if the leaking begins as soon as precipitation starts falling. Heavy rains can cause roofs to leak faster than they would during dry weather, so its important to take steps to prevent leaks before they become a problem.
One way to do this is by having an effective rainwater collection system in place. This system will let you collect all the water that falls on your property and then transfer it into storage tanks or pipes underground. Another approach is to use a waterproof sealant on all areas of your roof where water could fall.
Both these techniques are important, but they arent the only ones available. You can also try using a rain gutter system to help stop rain from getting onto your property.
The Critical Role Of Flat Roof Drainage Systems
Although many people don’t realize it, water can be a roof’s biggest enemy. That’s the reason that you won’t find a roof anywhere in sight without some sort of gutter or drain system. It’s also why people go through so much trouble to keep them from clogging. Water can cause underlying wood to rot, mold growth, and cause damaging leaks to enter the building’s structure. On a flat roof, the risk of water damage is multiplied. That’s because a flat roof is prone to allowing water to pool up, which amplifies its’ damaging effects. On top of that, pooling water on a flat roof is a cumulative problem â the longer it remains, the bigger the affected area gets.

BM: There is additional important information that an on-site inspector would have to observe and then consider before offering a confident diagnosis about the roof drain overflow problem that you and your photo describe in your email.
But I can offer a few comments, and also I refer you and your building superintendent to the low slope roof drain design discussion and suggestions found on this page.
How Many Drains Does A Flat Roof Need
Take the roofs total square footage and divide by the total square footage handled by one drain. The number of drain needed is determined by the result.
If you want to know how many square feet of roof space is needed for a given amount of water, you can use the following formula: 1 square foot = 1/4 of a square meter.
So, for example, if you have a roof with a total floor area of 1,200 square meters, then you would need to have 11,360 sq. ft. of floor space to handle the water.

Why Is Drainage Important For A Commercial Flat Roof
When you have a flat roof or a slightly pitched roof, gravity will not move water from the roof to the ground. Your roofing system must be outfitted with a drainage system that carries water from the roof to the ground to prevent water ponding that eventually leads to leaks. That and caulking are where you are vulnerable on the roof, and the tiny crack in either substance becomes the leak that wreaks havoc in your commercial structure.
During winter months, the freeze-thaw cycle and the weight of snow will put extra weight on your roof something your roof wasnt designed to withstand. Structural damage can ensue from the crushing weight of the snow. Another place that can be a hazard for a flat roofing system is the vents and chimneys these two items are access points for water. They must be monitored regularly to prevent invasive water from making its way into the building.
How Does A Flat Roof Drain
A low-slope roof tilts slightly downhill from its center or from one side, so water rolls off to parapet scuppers and down the hopper . The openings in the outside walls are designed to allow water, but not debris, to drain away from the roof. Drainage systems can be installed in a variety of ways.
The most common method is to install a drainage system on the inside of the house. This is the most expensive and time-consuming method, and it is not recommended for new construction. However, if you are building a new home or remodeling an existing home, you may be able to save money by installing a drainage system in your existing structure.

Reader Question: number of roof drains needed on flat roofs
6/24/2014 David Howard, AIA said: What is the general area of a flat single-ply roof for each roof drain .
To design a sloped or flat roof drainage system we need to know the anticipated maximum rainfall rate and the flat or projected roof area. I examined several roof drainage calculators and tables to see what they tell us.
Please see ROOF DRAINAGE CALCULATIONS for a detailed answer to your question.
Also see the roof drain installation guides on this page as some of those have tables and guides for roof drain sizing and number and location.
Watch out: keep in mind that a design without adequate safety margins risks dangerous structural collapse of the roof or other catastrophes such as a building flood. Just consider what happens in “real life” when roof drains become clogged because no one remembered to inspect and clear the drains.
Stay Safe This Halloween
- Oversee children carving pumpkins and do not let young children use knives. Allow them to draw their designs on the pumpkin and then cut it out yourself.
- If you do not want to carve your pumpkins, you can allow children to paint their pumpkins or decorate them with stickers, glitter, or markers.
- Although candles are the traditional way to light up carved pumpkins, we suggest that you a safer method such as a glow stick or flameless candle.
- Select brightly colored costumes for your child or children. Bright colors make your child visible and keeps them safe as they trick or treat.
- Ensure that the costumes you pick fit properly and are not a tripping hazard.
- Substitute face paint or makeup for face masks to fully see and avoid hazards.
Trick or Treating
- If you are heading out to trick or treat, we suggest that you choose streets that are well-lit and have sidewalks. Do not allow children to walk in the roadway.
- Inspect each piece of candy collected to look for signs it was tampered with or opened. Discard affected pieces.

Is Standing Water On A Flat Roof Ok
Standing water on a flat roof is not always safe, but it can be tolerated if there are specific factors involved. A flat roof is one of the most common places to find standing water, and while it may not be a health hazard, it can cause problems if left untreated.
If standing water is present on your roof, make sure to clean it as soon as possible. Doing so can help remove any toxins that may have built up over time and make the surface more resistant to future damage. Additionally, avoid putting anything down into the water this could potentially create another issue down the line.
How Do You Improve Drainage On A Flat Roof
A flat roof isnt really flat, there is some slope to the roof, or it couldnt drain. Flat Roof Scuppers Have The Following Benefits:
- Large, wide scuppers rarely if ever get clogged by debris
- Well designed scuppers can enhance the aesthetics of the home or building
While scuppers are the generally the best drainage solution for flat roofs, there are some disadvantages to take into account. Any downspouts that are installed below the scuppers for drainage are vulnerable to clogs and must be checked regularly for debris. Scuppers can also be ineffective for heavy rain and snowmelt, and they are less effective on flat roof with little to no pitch to guide the water to the edges. Scuppers must be cleverly designed for the best effect.
How To Identify If Your Roof Is Prone To Ponding Water
As any homeowner knows, a roof is essential to the house. Not only does it protect the interior from the elements, but it also adds to the homes curb appeal. However, ponding water can also damage roofs, which can lead to leaks and other problems. There are several ways to tell if your roof is prone to ponding water. First, look for any low spots where water could collect. Second, check the gutters and downspouts to ensure they are clear and debris-free. Third, look for any cracks or holes in the roof that could allow water to seep through. By taking these simple steps, you can help to prevent ponding water from damaging your roof.

Should I Put Gravel On My Flat Roof
Gravel flat roofs and pea shingle flat roofs As ballast, the gravel will help anchor the material underneath and lower the risk of it being blown off in high winds. The stones absorb some of the suns rays, preventing the roof material from becoming too hot in the summer. The roofing material is made up of a mixture of sand, gravel and clay.
The sand and gravel are mixed with water to form a slurry, which is then poured into a mould. Once the mould is filled, it is placed in a kiln to dry and harden. This process can take up to two weeks. After this, a thin layer of clay is added to the top layer to give it a smooth surface. It is this clay that will be used to fill the gaps between the slabs of stone.
How To Prevent Water From Pooling On A Flat Roof
If you have had an issue with water pooling on a flat roof you can have it fixed in a number of ways to prevent it from happening in the future:
- Ensure any low spots where water pools are repaired. You can do this by filling in the low spot with roof plaster to make it level with the rest of the roof. Bearing in mind flat roofs do have subtle slopes to ensure water flows towards the drainage system A professional roofing contractor is able to do this for you.
- It is a good idea to open up and/or unclog the existing drainage system. Over time leaves, and other debris can build up and cause a drainage issue causing water to pool on the roof. Having a regular cleaning of drains and gutter is essential for roof health.
- Invest in more drains and gutters. If the areas you live in have a lot of rain or more rain than it used to, it may be an idea to install more drains to remove the water from the roof. Alternatively, you could make the current system wider to allow more water to flow off the roof.
- The roof may need repitching if it was not done correctly the first time. This means that the subtle slope was simply not done well enough and doesnt let water flow off the roof. This can be quite a complicated task, so it is best to speak to commercial roofing professionals.

Adding Drains For Ponding Roofs
It is possible to add new roof drains to relieve ponding on a sagged flat roof, as shown at left.
Notice that the new drain extends to the building exterior where it is conducted to ground or to a storm drain.
Using this method permits adding a drain at the roof’s low point.
When the building is re-roofed, the roofer may install tapered foam insulation to direct water to roof scuppers or to a main or new-main roof drain to prevent future ponding. Sketch courtesy of Carson Dunlop Associates .

Drawbacks Of The Scupper Drainage System
Although scupper is one of the best solutions for removing water from the roof, it still has some disadvantages. For example, it may draw the water out of the rooftop, but the floating debris can clog the drainage system.
Usually, the water runs from a scupper out of the building into a pipe drainage system. Hence, debris can flow along with water and reach the pipe.
It can block the passage and cause further problems. To avoid this, owners must check the drainage system regularly.
On top of that, the scupper drainage system is not efficient in heavy rain and snowfall. If the roof is pure flat, then there is nothing to guide the water to the scuppers. The scupper drainage does not work in this condition as well.
For scuppers to be effective, it must be well-designed to avoid all the problems mentioned above.

Why Do Tall Buildings Have Flat Roofs
Look at the skyline of any city and youll notice most of the commercial buildings have flat roofs. There is actually more than one reason for this, dealing either with cost or efficiency. In some cases, there may be jurisdictional codes that prevent buildings from being a certain height. There are examples where tall buildings dont have flat roofs, but thats more for the design than anything else.
CostSimply put, flat roofing costs less than peaked or pitched roofing. With trusses, decking, underlayment, and finally the roofing material itself, the cost can double or triple with materials alone. Residential roofs can be pitched because the cost increase is negligible. On buildings that take up a city block, its much much more.
EfficiencyThese buildings also need ventilation systems, air conditioners, and other mechanical equipment. Often, there is no room around the base of the building and inside square footage is at a premium. A flat roof is perfect for this equipment: Easy to access, maintain, and is out of the way.
Building codesAlmost every major city has limits to the size of their industrial, manufacturing, or commercial buildings. If youre looking for more square footage in your building, why waste any height on a sloped roof that could equal two or three more floors? An antenna placed at the top of the roof is even taken into account.
