How To Calculate Roof Shingles In Bundles

How to measure a roof and calculate square feet. | 01/2020

The roof shingle calculator does the work for you, allowing you to relax and focus on other parts of your project. Still, we understand that you might feel more confident in its results if you learn how to do the math yourself! Without further ado, lets look at how to calculate roof shingles by hand. We will break the equation into smaller parts until you get all the pieces of the puzzle!

The shortest, most straightforward answer to the question of how to calculate roof shingles is this beautiful little equation:

shingle bundles = roof area in squares × 3

That is because the average bundle of shingles covers about 33.3 ft², and a square is simply an area unit covering 100 ft², so if youd like to calculate a roofs area in squares, youd simply divide the roof area in feet by 100 and, most likely, round it up.

roof area in squares = roof area in feet / 100.

Are you working with the metric system? Dont worry head to our length converter to get the values in a unit you are more conformable with.

If you are interested, you can read on to the next section of this article to learn more about squares in construction. For now, though, this short explanation will do.

Now, lets break down the base roof shingle equation and learn how to measure a roof for shingles. We have the area in squares. But how do we get the area in normal units? To do that, we need to start with the very basic area equation:

roof footprint area = roof length × roof width.

How Many Bundles Of Shingles Do I Need For 2700 Square Feet

You will need approximately 81 bundles of standard size 3-tab asphalt shingles or 108 bundles of architectural shingles for 2,700 square feet.

Thus, for a 2700 square foot gable roof, you would need 81 bundles of shingles plus 10% of ridge, starter and wastages. Thus, it will take 81 bundles of 3-tab standard size shingles to cover 2700 square feet roof. Thus, there are 81 bundles of standard size 3-tab shingles you will need to cover 2700 square feet roof.

What Is One Square In Roofing

If you dont know what any of this article has been about so far, dont worry. One square in roofing is a measurement. Its equal to 100 square feet, or 10 x 10. That means that if you were doing a roofing job on a home that was 1000 sq ft, it would be the same as installing 10 squares of roofing material .

How Many Bundles In A Square

How Many Square Feet Does One Bundle Of Architectural Shingles Cover

Shingles are purchased by the bundle and different types of shingles are different sizes and the bundles contain different amounts. Standard shingles measure 12 x 36 and come in bundles of 29. Each bundle will therefore cover around 33 square feet.

This means that there are 3 bundles of standard shingles per square of the roof. This is similar to other types of shingles that are different sizes, even if they contain fewer shingles per bundle. However, it is still best to double-check because sometimes there are some discrepancies.

One of the most important terms you should be familiar with if you are about to start your roof replacement process is roofing square.

This article will find out all you need to know about what a roofing square is and how to calculate roofing squares.

A roofing square is a measurement unit used to calculate the size of a roof, and it is equivalent to 100 square feet. This unit makes it easier to calculate roofing square feet.

The number of roofing squares in 1200 square feet is 12. One roofing square equals 100 square feet. Converting square feet to roofing squares is an easy thing to do. For a roof of 1200 square feet, you will have 12 squares. The value is obtained by dividing the square feet by 100 .

Plan For Extra Valley Material

Valleys are either woven or cut both methods require about the same number of shingles. On a woven valley, each course of shingles is extended beyond the valley crease and at least 12 in. onto the adjacent roof plane. Youll use 2 ft. of extra shingle material for each pair of woven courses. In the case of cut valleys, the shingles from the first roof plane thats shingled also extend onto the adjacent roof plane at least 12 in. just like woven valleys. Shingles from the next roof plane are cut just up from the valley line, and the cutoff pieces usually arent big enough to use elsewhere on the roof. Order two extra shingles per linear foot of valley to account for the overlaps and cutoffs. On a 16-ft. valley, you would need 32 shingles or roughly one extra bundle.

How To Calculate Square Feet Of A Roof

Before you do any roofing work, you must calculate the roofs square footage to determine how much material you need. Shingles and other roofing materials, such as underlayment, are typically measured in squares that are 10 feet long and 10 feet wide, with each square measuring 100 square feet.

When calculating square footage for your roof, always add at least 10 percent of the total to account for waste.

  • Measure the length and width of every roof plane or surface. Include dormers . This information may be available on the homes original building plan or, if the roof surface is relatively low and flat, you can measure it yourself. If you cannot get up to the roof and measure safely, either hire a professional or make your best estimate of the roof surface dimensions.

  • Multiply the length and width of each square or rectangle-shaped plane. Calculate each plane separately. For example, if one roof plane measures 120 feet by 120 feet, 120 x 120 = 14,400 square feet.

  • Calculate the square footage for symmetrical, triangle-shaped planes by multiplying the length of the triangle’s base by its height . Then divide the total by 2 to get the square footage. For example, if a triangle-shaped roof plane measures 60 feet along the base and is 30 feet high, we have 60 x 30 = 1,800 feet, divided by 2 = 900 square feet for the triangle-shaped plane.

    Hip And Ridge Cap Shingles

Hips and ridges are covered with cap shingles, which are 1-ft. shingle squares that wrap over the hip or ridge. Like regular shingles, they overlap for a 5-in. exposure. On roofs shingled with three-tab or no-cutout shingles, you simply cut standard shingles into caps. You can cap about 35 lin. ft. of ridge or hips with each bundle of three-tab shingles that come three bundles to the square. You can also salvage waste shingle pieces and portions of damaged shingles for use as caps.

For roofs shingled with laminated shingles, multi-cutout shingles, and other patterned shingles, youll have to order hip-and-ridge shingles that are manufactured as companions to the specific shingle product you are using. Theyre sold by the bundle and usually cap 35 lin. ft., but check with your supplier because some products vary. Just measure the length of the ridges and hips and divide by 35 to determine how many bundles of regular or hip-and-ridge shingles youll need.

    Whats Your Roof Slope

Parameters That Should Be Calculated When Arranging A Hipped Roof

If we talk about the necessary calculations before carrying out installation work, first of all, we should mention how to calculate the roof area of ââ\u200b\u200ba hipped roof. The correct option here is to calculate for each of the roof slopes separately, with the subsequent addition of the results. In this case, standard mathematical formulas are used to calculate the area of ââcertain geometric shapes.

So, for example, if the slope has a triangular shape, then a perpendicular line to the base, called the height, is drawn from its top by means of a rope or cord. Further, this very height of the triangular slope is multiplied by the length of the base, and the resulting amount is divided in half. The result will be the area of ââa triangular roof slope.

For trapezoidal slopes, the formula is somewhat different: first, the length of the upper and lower bases of the trapezoid is added, then their sum is divided in half and multiplied by the height of the slope.

Another important point in calculating a hipped roof is to determine the required distance between the rafters. The size of the gaps depends mainly on the material of the roofing. So, for example, for metal tiles and corrugated board, it is 60-90 centimeters, and for bituminous tiles 100-120 centimeters, since in the latter case the roof is laid on a continuous crate of plywood.
