Install The Roof Boards
To bevel the first roof board, set your table saw or circular saw to 23 degrees and rip a bevel on the groove edge of the board. Align the board with the ends of the trusses and nail it with 16d galvanized nails. Install the remaining boards, making sure to snug the joints tight before nailing them. Let the boards hang out past the last truss to form the gable end overhang. Cut the last board on each side to fit at the peak.
When you’re done installing the roof boards, snap a chalk line at the gable end and saw them off to leave an 18-in. overhang. Finish the gable end overhang by installing a pair of rafters and the 1×3 trim. Hold the gable end rafters tight to the underside of the cutoff roof boards and screw through the roof boards to hold the rafters in place. Then cut 1×3 trim to cover the end grain of the roof boards. Extend the trim around the corners and return it along the roof edge to the house.
Construct A Jig To Assemble The Roof Trusses

Flashing A Patio Roof Ledger
Unless it will be protected from rain by the houses eaves or a solid roof, a roof ledger that is fastened directly to a house with wood siding should be capped with galvanized metal Z-flashing that tucks up under siding to prevent water from seeping in behind it.
Where integral flashing isnt possible, such as on a stucco wall, use Z-flashing and caulk the top edge. This is a job you must do before fastening the overheads roof rafters in place.
You can buy L- or Z-shaped flashing or bend it yourself. To bend sheet-metal flashing, make a form by clamping two 2 by 4s together on each side of the metal, and then hammer the metal to create a sharp edge at each fold.
Fit the flashing in place, caulk the top edge, and nail it with galvanized nails long enough to penetrate at least 1 inch into the structural members. Then caulk the nail heads.
If the house is sided with shingles or lap siding, simply slip the metals top edge up under the bottom edge of the shingles or siding as far as possible.

Install The Joists And Joist Hangers
Nail through the joist hangers into the beams at the house to hold them in place. Then connect the opposite ends of the two beams at the front with a 2×10 cut to the same length as the ledger. Adjust the resulting frame until the diagonal measurements are equal.
Then brace the frame against stakes pounded into the ground to hold it square while you install the treated posts, joists and decking. Sight along the outside rim joist occasionally and adjust the length of the joists as needed to keep the front rim joist straight.

Attach Trim And Sill To The Outer Walls
Nail a 2×10 trim board over the outside joist, 1-1/2 in. below the top surface of the deck. Cut a 2×4 sill piece to width and bevel the top on a table saw. Miter the ends and nail the sill to the top of the 2×10 trim board.

Mark Rafter Plate Location And Remove Siding
Now that you know the rise and run, you know where to place the rafter plate on your wall. Make sure it is at least 3 inches below any windows allowing for the thickness of your roofing materials .Snap a horizontal chalk line at this point a minimum of the length of the flooring below. This will be your “upper” line measurement for the rafter plate.
Measure down from this line the width of your rafter plate. Usually, it is a 2×6 board, so in this case, measure down approximately 6 inches.Snap a horizontal line at the mark – it is your “lower” rafter plate line. These two lines represent the location of your rafter plate.Carefully remove the siding contained within those lines to expose the wall studs or other supporting material. Disregard if placing rafter plate on brick, etc.
Note: In our building project depicted by the photos on this page, the rafter plate and ledger board were already exposed after we removed the old porch.

When building a porch roof you have to determine the rise and run of your porch roof. Normally, you will want to replicate the same rise and run you have on the main roof of your home.Sometimes this is not feasible due to window placement but you want to get as close to it as possible.Next, determine the location on your wall where you will attach the rafter plate to get the proper rise and run. How To Install & Build A Porch Roof
A porch roof is essentially composed of layers of specialized materials that are designed to last for many years of natural exposure. Above the structural trusses or rafters, your roof will be covered in 3/8 or 1/2 tongue and groove plywood. The plywood for the roof comes in 4×8 sheets and will hold the roof members together much like decking secures the deck frame. The next layer will be a minimum #15 roofing felt, which can be stapled in place over the plywood to create a water tight barrier for the shingles to cover. Install drip edge flashing to the lower edge of the roof and step flashing at the house wall.

Tools And Safety Gear
In order to cut your rafters, youll need a jigsaw or circular saw and a rafter square to measure your cuts. You should wear a helmet, safety glasses, and gloves throughout construction, and only use sturdy ladders with rubber feet. Make sure theyre always placed on level ground to avoid falling. Cutting rafters requires some experience with a saw. Each rafter will need a tail cut, a plumb cut, and a birds mouth cut to install securely into the frame of the roof.
Youll also need at least one other person to help install the header boards and place the rafters. Depending on the size of your porch roof, you may need to use scaffolding to keep you secure while you place the shingles. Walking on a roof requires care, and the wrong step can damage your roofing material and lead to leaks.

How To Work Out The Lengths Of Rafters
Pythagorean theorem: We can use the Pythagorean theorem , then find the square root. In our example, our porch roof would be 24 squared plus 20 squared , which added together equals 976. Then, taking the square root of 976, we get 31.24. So, your rafter length would be 311/4 inches
Example: 242 + 202 = 976
Let’s say our roof is a 10 in 12
- 10 x 10 = 100, then 12 x 12 = 144 add them together = 244
- Find square root, which is 15.62
- This means that for every 12 inches our roof travels, the rafter will be 15.62 inches longer.
But, as not all roof runs work into exact multiples of 12, we need to take it a step further to make it easier.
To cut our rafter, we place our square on to our timber. Lining up the marks 10 and 12. We draw a line down the top cut side we then measure down the timber 31.2 inches, put our square back on, lining up the 12 and 10 again, but making sure this time that the no 12 is on our bottom mark, then draw a line for our bottom or seat cut.
