Vinegar Is A Great Natural Cleaner

One of the most potent natural cleaners out there is vinegar. It is a non-toxic substance and hence has the added advantage of being perfectly safe for your pets or for any perchers that may occasionally bask on your roof. It is also a readily available kitchen item. To use vinegar as a cleaning agent, soak your cleaning sponge in it and then spread it over the surface. Be sure to have swept the surface before dabbing it with vinegar.

Vinegar works great on molds. If you are dealing with stubborn mold growth, apply vinegar to the area and its surroundings and leave it soaked for about an hour. Rinse the entire surface off with water. You may have to repeat the process or invest in a strong vinegar to combat severe mold growth. Even if your roof does not have mold spots, it is good to give it an occasional vinegar wash to prevent mold growth.

Summer is here, and many people are hitting the road in their RV, exploring new places, visiting family, and enjoying the privacy and freedom that their rolling home affords. However, if you haven’t inspected your RV roof lately, your vacation time will go from fun to disaster the first time you encounter a heavy storm. Sealcoating your RV roof regularly can protect the integrity of its structure and give you peace of mind that your RV will retain its value.

Be Sure Not To Use These On A Rubber Roof:

  • Abrasive Cleaners
  • Acidic Cleaners

With all the chemicals and toxins in the general cleaners, I have always wondered what is considered safe? My 4-legged family members play and lick and do all kinds of dog-things right in the same spot that I am cleaning my toys and trailers after all.

Why You Need To Pay Attention To The Rv Roof

How To Clean The Rubber Roof On a RV – What Should You Use

The reasoning is simple: time equals oxidization.

If the roof is allowed to deteriorate, water will begin to seep through the ceiling and down the walls. As if that werent enough of a deterrent, the moisture will cause damage to any electrical components it encounters, which is a costly and dangerous prospect.

Your health and safety factor into the equation as well. Mold thrives in humid, moist environments, and its presence can cause respiratory issues. It also creates a foul odor that may linger for a while even after youve managed to resolve the issue.

Finally, cleaning the roof regularly will help you to protect your investment. The value of the RV will depreciate if its allowed to deteriorate in this way. Most RV insurance plans dont cover water damage, so its in your best interest to prevent it.

Basic Cleaning Tips For Rv Rubber Roof

Below tips will help you cleaning a rubber RV roof in a better way.

1.Wear good grip shoes for safety

Whenever working from a high place, its best to watch out for yourself. It is advised that whenever you climb at the roof of your RV to clean it, ensure you wear shoes with a good grip. Also, do not step backward- you could fall and sustain major injuries.

After you begin the job, you still have to bear in mind that soap and water make a surface dangerously slippery. You can still try to be safer by using a spotter to keep watch on you.

The ladder you use to climb should also be firmly secured against the RV. Everything else youll need for the job, such as water in a bucket, should then be hoisted up using a rope.

Walking across the RV is also big as it significantly increases the risk of tripping and tumbling down.

Once everything is set, its time to clean the roof.

    2. Sweep bigger debris first

Just like youd do on any other cleaning job, getting rid of the bigger pieces of debris is the better way to begin cleaning the RV roof.

Next, inspect the RV roofing for defects such as bumps, cracks, soft spots, and ripples on the roofing material. Check for any mold or mildew, or any other contaminant that could be destroying the roof. Clean the mold/mildew with bleach or vinegar diluted in water.

Closely examine the caulk and seams on windows, doors, and any other edges to ensure they still perform as expected.

    3. Rinse off loose dirt first

    4.Use long handle brush

    Rv Rubber Roof Cleaner

Harmful chemicals dont mix well with rubber roofs. So for something that is homemade, its good to stick with mild ingredients.

    What youll need:

    • Cloth rag

Combine the dish soap and water in a bucket.

Before applying anything to the roof, remove all loose debris first to prepare the surface for washing. Do this using a garden hose.

Dip the long-handled scrub brush into the bucket and scrub the roof gently to remove the dirt. Continue scrubbing gently until you remove as much dirt as you can.

Rinse off the soap suds using the garden hose.

If there are stubborn stains, apply one to two tablespoons mineral spirit to a cloth rag and rub the stained areas.

Remember not to directly apply the mineral spirit to the roof to avoid probable damage.

Repeat The Technique Until The Rv Roof Is Clean

With regular cleanings, you should only have to clean your RV roof once. However, if you havent cleaned it in a while, it may take a few times. Although it can be a bit labor-intensive, it is well worth it in the long-term. Avoiding leaks and water damage is cost-effective and maintains the quality of your RV.

Before You Begin Your Rubber Roof Repair

    Dicor Roof

First the following conditions should be met:

    1. Ambient temperature MUST be 40 degrees F or higher otherwise the primer will either freeze or the bond will not be as strong as it is intended to be, thus your patch will leak prematurely.2. Repair surface MUST be dry when you apply primer and patch otherwise the patch will not hold.3. Before applying the patch, you must thoroughly clean the repair surface, remove any and all debris, dirt, any tar or other sealants / caulking that might have been applied.4. It is recommended in certain situations to also remove old lap caulk, before applying the new patch.

How To Clean A Rv Rubber Roof

Alongside the freedom and adventure of RV ownership comes the responsibility of maintenance and upkeep for its various components. As it endures the elements on your journeys, the roof of your RV is subjected to pounding rain, blazing heat, even possibly snow and ice. Preventing problems is far better than emergency fixups in the pouring rain!

With proper cleaning and repair, the roof of your RV should last about 20 years. Generally speaking, you should clean the roof of your RV every 3 months or so, with more frequent cleaning if youre actively traveling. Pay close attention to the caulking to avoid leaks.

Good RV roof maintenance requires knowing which type of roof you have rubber-coated, fiberglass, or aluminum. Rubber is the most popular RV roof coating material as it is inexpensive and lightweight. If you have a rubber RV roof, check to see whether yours is made of either Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer or Thermal Polyolefin . EPDM roofs may need to be resealed every 3-4 years, regardless of upkeep attention.

The cleaner you use on your RV roof is important. EPDM roofs have less solvent and oil resistance than TPO. For this reason, most manufacturers warn against using harsh, abrasive cleaners or petroleum distillates to clean them. You should also avoid using citrus-based cleaners or mineral oils, which could dissolve your EPDM rubber membrane.

Can You Pressure Wash A Rv Rubber Roof

These types of roofs are more durable to impact and flex better than fiberglass roofs do, so Yes! I pressure wash mine at the start to knock off any mold buildups and dirt that stuck on during the sweeping part of cleaning.

Keep an eye out for large cracks and dont pressure wash the joint of where your roof utilities are sealed. Its best to scrub these areas with a smaller brush. Also, dont pressure wash your hatch covers. Theyre a little too fragile to hold up. I also pressure wash the top and bottom of my awning too. The neighbors just love my bikini

Cleaning and treating rubber roof. Roof repair mistakes
  • 1Spray tires with water to remove buildup. The dirt and grime that builds up on your tires can be especially difficult to remove. Spray all surfaces of the tire with a high pressure stream of water with a power washer or hose.
  • A power washer is preferred for tire cleaning to more easily remove buildup, though a hose with a spray attachment should work in a pinch.

Recreational vehicles, or RVs, are notorious for leaks. Plus, the fact that these vehicles may often be sitting unused for weeks or even months at a time means that you may not realize that your RV leaks until it’s a big one that damages the interior of the structure.

Cleaners To Avoid Using On A Rubber Rv Roof

How To Clean The Rubber Roof On a RV

There are many more products that you can use to clean your RVs roof than you cant, but youll definitely want to avoid any petroleum-based or citric acid-based chemicals, as well as anything with mineral spirits.

These distillates can spell disaster for your rubber roof because of a chemical reaction that causes the rubber to swell and detach from the structural substrate below. This makes the rubber more prone to damage, not to mention these chemicals also discolor your roof.

How Often To Clean Your Rv Roof

If your RV lives in a field or driveway away from trees, you should only have to clean the roof every six months or so. Having said that, it wouldnt hurt to pop up the ladder and inspect it more frequently and six months is the longest I would go between cleanings.

If youre under trees a lot, its pollen season, or you live where its often humid, youll probably want to clean the roof every three months instead. Trees drop leaves, bugs, sap, and hold birds that drop poop. Pollen will turn everything yellow, and constant humidity is a recipe for mildew and mold. As long as you use a safe cleaner, you wont hurt your roof by cleaning it more often.
