Does My Metal Roof Need An Underlayment

Metal Roof Installation 2 of 6

The simple answer is yes, your roof does need an underlayment. But there are some caveats that go with that, and it depends on a variety of factors.

Traditionally built homes will need an underlayment. If your home is built with joists, insulation between those joists, and sheathing, then an underlayment is needed before you put on a metal roof. Basically any house in Montana, from Billings to Philipsburg to Zortman is going to be built this way. But there are parts of the home that differ.

A covered patio may not need an underlayment. If your patio has open beam architecture, and is designed to have a roof consisting of structural metal panels then you dont need an underlayment.

If your metal roof is going on top of asphalt shingles, then there is already an underlayment, and it likely doesnt need another. Keep in mind, however, that expansion and contraction of the shingles could cause damage to the back of the metal over time. Its for this reason that Beartooth Metal Roofing in Billings always tears off the old shingles before applying a new roof.

There are some metal manufacturers that require an underlayment in order to keep the warranty valid. Some go even further and require a self-adhering underlayment throughout the entire roof deck. It is a more expensive method, but it will last a whole lot longer and be a whole lot more weather proof.

How Do You Attach Corrugated Metal To A Wall

Start at the bottom of the wall, and install the first strip one inch above floor level. Install the rest of the strips 24 inches apart, and finish with an additional strip at the top of the wall. Insert a screw in a furring strip every place it crosses a wall stud. Studs are typically 16 or 24 inches apart.

Install The Remaining Panels

Install the following line of panels now and work your way up. After finishing that, go back down to start the next one. Youll have to align the panels, overlapping the edge for about 14 inches.

Start the next column by fixing the first left side-rib of the new panel over the last rib of the previously installed panel. In this way, repeat each panel until you cover the whole roof.

Using The Wrong Substrate Or Underlayment

Metal roofing panels are usually designed to be installed over a solid substrate such as plywood. They can also sometimes be installed over battens rather than solid wood surfaces. As a general thumb rule, however, it is best to put them over a solid surface – particularly for smaller buildings like homes or garages.

Metal roof panels that are installed over battens are more likely to develop condensation behind the panels than those that are installed over solid surfaces. This is caused by the temperature difference between the cold metal panels and the warm, moist air that is trapped underneath them. To minimize problems with condensation, opt for a substrate such as plywood or OSB.

Even if you do install the panels over solid wood decking, you should still use an approved underlayment. This will provide additional protection against condensation, minimizing the likelihood of damage occurring.

When getting plywood for replacement, you must make sure the material is quality-made and can protect the roof above it. You should never neglect any sign of damage on your plywood, as they can cause serious harm over time.

For you to have a good-looking and sound structured metal roof, the plywood must be thick enough to help the roof withstand its weight, rain, snow, and wind. Always know that a good under-structure is a good support system and therefore must be taken seriously.

Five: Installing The Rest Of The First Panel Column

After the first panel has been installed, you have to move to the next panel and also install it. Work your way toward the top of the roof before returning to the bottom of the roof where you will be installing the next column of the panel.

Align the second panel, assembling it accurately in such a way that it is directly placed above the first panel. Allow their edges to overlap each other about 12 inches apart. Use metal screws to firmly secure the metal, in the same way, you secured the first panel.

How To Put Tpo Roofing On Plywood

Follow these steps to ensure that its properly put on top of the plywood:

First Step: is to make sure that your roof can support it.

Whether or not theres enough weight and strength for TPO material should be determined by a professional because they will know exactly how much pressure each type of roofing material requires.

Second Step: you need to make sure that your roof is clean before the installation begins.

This means clearing out any debris, dirt, or even leaves because it can cause problems with adhesion and create a mess for you later on down the line.

Third Step: check for any joints between different sections of plywood so you have a smooth surface ahead of time.

Make sure that all of your plywood is at least ¾ inches thick because anything less will not be strong enough for TPO material which can weigh up to 70 pounds per square foot.

Fourth Step: apply a primer coat followed by a layer of adhesive which creates the initial bond for this roofing material.

Last step: add the final coat on top of this and let it all dry before youre able to go back inside your home without worrying about any problems with moisture or condensation underneath the membrane itself.

This usually requires a professional who has done this before. If TPO roofing is applied incorrectly, it could lead to a number of different problems down the line that you dont want.

Install Edging And Underlayment

Install the underlayment as per the instructions by the manufacturer. If you are installing edging, which is essentially flashing that works with your metal roof panels, then you should first install the eave edging.

When installing your eave edging, youll fit it to the underside of your eave and onto the face it should cover the entire face of your eave. Screw the eave edging to the underside of the eave, through the lip of the flashing. Then nail the faces with stainless steel finishing nails of the same color as your flashing.

Then install your underlayment so that it covers the eave edging edge. Install the rake edging over the underlayment. It attaches in the same way as your eave edging, except that you use roofing screws to face screw the rake flashing. Ensure the eave end of the rake edging goes over the eave edging.

Note that some rake edging may go over the installed metal panels, not under. In that case, install the metal panels first and the rake edging afterwards. It depends entirely on the manufacturer of your metal roofing panel.

By Step Metal Roof Installation

To explain how to install a metal roof, well use a 10×10 shed with a simple gable roof running down the center of the structure, with a 4:12 slope. Well also be using a standard raised rib metal panel that uses exposed fasteners to attach the panel to the roof sheathing.

Keep in mind that you can use either OSB roof sheathing or plywood for a roof deck beneath your metal roof panels. You can install a metal roof directly on top of either. The key is making sure they are at least ½ thick, at a minimum.

You can use furring strips instead of a solid roof deck such as OSB or plywood. If you are not heating your shed, then furring strips are totally acceptable. If you do heat your shed, furring strips greatly increase the amount of condensation youll have on the underside of your metal roof, so they should be avoided in that instance in favor of a solid roof substrate.

Using The Wrong Fasteners

When installing metal roofing, it is important to use the right fasteners. If you use standard screws, water can easily leak in around them. This can cause your roof to fail.

Always look for fasteners that are designed specifically for metal roof panels. These fasteners usually incorporate a special washer that helps seal the opening, keeping water from getting inside.

Most companies that manufacture roof panels have specific recommendations as to what fasteners you should use with their panels. To get the best results, always follow their recommendations. Don’t try to save money by skimping on fasteners. The quality of the fasteners is every bit as important as the quality of the roof panels themselves.

Install The Metal Roof Panels

Installing the metal roof panel depends on the type of metal roof product you have, but start at the edge and make sure your first panel overlaps the existing edging by an inch, if applicable. Otherwise run your first panel flush with the rake edge of your roof and 1 over the eave if you have gutters 3 if you dont have gutters.

The top of the metal panel should be flush or no more than an inch below the peak of the gable roof. Screw in your panels according to manufacturer directions. See above for rules about how many screws to use our rule was 80 per square of roofing.

If screwing into the rib of the metal panel, be careful to not screw too far and dent the rib and overly compress the neoprene washer. If you have metal panels overlap at a rib you can also use metal lap screws, which connect the panels but do not go into the sheathing. These are also used for roof edging that go over metal roof rake ends.

If your metal roof product says you need mastic tape and sealant to put beneath the panel seams, then go ahead and apply. Do it slowly as the tape can be difficult to work with.

Chances are your final piece of roof will need a lengthwise cut to fit the width of your shed roof. If so, a circular saw with a metal cutting blade works really well. You can also use tin snips but cutting long pieces with snips is awkward and arduous.
