So were gonna be using Owens Corning Deck Defense. This is a synthetic underlayment. Its similar to your old tar paper. Its just stronger, doesnt tear as much, and comes in bigger rolls. Each roll is 10 squares, so it covers 1,000 square feet, so its a lot easier to work on and safer when youre on steeper roofs. This is probably the easiest component when installing a shingle roof, and were not relying on this for waterproofing. Even though we wanna make sure that its properly lapped and properly installed, your shingles are what really does your waterproofing. All this does is two things: in case of shingles blowing off or coming off, it makes sure that your roof is waterproof, and it also provides a separation layer between your shingles and wood, which can actually pull the asphalt into it. Understanding Different Types of Roofing Valleys
What are roof valleys? A roof valley is a channel created where a roof changes direction or angles. Usually, a V or W shaped metal piece is placed in the valley to channel water off your roof. Roof valleys are very important for a “roofing system” to work correctly and must be done right and taken care of to keep them in good condition. Sadly though, few homeowners get into the design details of their roofs or how they actually work.
There are two basic roof valley types:
Open Valleys
Roofs that feature open valleys use “V” or “W” shaped metal pieces at the center of the valley. The sloping roof planes then stop some inches short of this centerline, leaving the valley open. The V or W shaped metal pieces used as centerlines could be Galvanized, Copper, Aluminum, Zinc Alloy, or Steel coated. Refer to your local area building codes as to which materials to use. The recommended minimum is 28-gauge galvanized/coated steel.
To protect the valley from moisture, the metal flashing is sandwiched between water and ice shield. The sloping roof planes stop at this waterproof lining on both sides, leaving the valley open to channel water off the roof.

With a heavy-gauge, noncorrosive metallining, open valleys are the most durable valley andthe most costly.

So a 16-foot valley would have 6 inches open at the top and 8 inches at the bottom .

Check The Slate For Required Overlap:
Look at the slate manufacturers standard after determining the pitch of your roof. Each manufacturer will recommend the necessary overlap for a sturdy and secure slate roof. The membrane should be protected by ensuring your rafters or trusses are free of splinters.
After that, start from one bottom corner of the roof trusses and roll your selected roofing membrane to the opposite corner. Repeating this technique, work your way up to the top of the roof. Assemble your roof to encourage any water to pour into the gutter that gets past the slates.
Installing The Second Course Of Shingles
