Basic Steps To Staining Concrete Paving On Your Own

Painting Terracotta Roof Tiles Step 4 applying Dulux Paint ...

#1-Check for Absorption

One of the first things that you need to check for is absorption. It is important for the concrete paving to absorb the stain. Since most concrete pavings are made up of porous materials, like limestone, they will usually absorb liquids and in this case the stain the surface.

To test if the paving is ready to be stained, simply spray the area with water through a hose. If the water beads remain on the surface, this means they will not absorb the stain. On the other hand, if the water seeps through, then youve taken care of the first step.

#2-Cleaning the Concrete Paving

With constant use, concrete paving is prone to cracks, chipped edges or chipped surfaces and dirt. These can create issues while staining them.

If you dont take care of these issues before staining the paving, then all these defects will become visible once the stain sets. This is not an ideal situation to be in.

You can clean the dirt using soap and water, but ensure its completely dry before you start the staining process.

If you have any scratches on the surface, you can repair these by sanding them. You can restore chips, gouges and deeper scratches by using a concrete patch kit. The moment the concrete patches dry, ensure to sand it and level the surface before staining them.

#3-Etching the Surface

During that time, the etching acid will eat away at the limestone and the smooth surface will be texturised.

How Much Does Roof Tile Paint Cost

A good roof painting contractor will discuss your options with you and make their own expert recommendations. Some typical prices may be:

  • $223 for 10 litres of high quality roof tile paint
  • $346 for 20 litres of heat reflective roof paint
  • $179 for 20 litres of exterior acrylic emulsion

The price difference between a high quality paint and other paints can be high, but it’s better to use a paint the roofing painter recommends. Using a cheaper paint could mean you have to repaint your roof sooner, which will end up costing more.

The type of roof tile paint your painter uses will affect the cost too. Depending on the type of roof you have and your location, they may use:

  • Polyurethane, polyurea or polymeric roof coatings
  • Bituminous coatings, though these are not as flexible as other coatings
  • Water based acrylic roof paints for a more reflective finish, though these are not suitable for roofs that have water ponding in some areas
  • Eco-friendly silicon paints that are better for the environment, but also more expensive

How Long Should Concrete Roof Tiles Last

HOW TO with Monier: Wash, Prime and Paint your Monier Roof

The standard lifespan of a quality concrete roof tile is 50 years, depending on how well you maintain the roof after installing the tiles. However, even with constant maintenance and repairs, you may need to replace your roof in 30 or 35 years because the tiles will have lost most of their allure and durability.

Like with many items we own, there are several ways to ensure that your concrete roof tiles reach and even surpass their standard lifespan. These include:

  • Insulating the roof.

One of the essential functions of a roof is to keep the inside of your home warm and comfortable. Insulating the roof will enhance its resilience by deterring excessive heat loss due to its direct exposure to the sun.

The key to proper insulation is using the right material for the job. Always use airtight spray foam insulation because it is breathable, easy to install, and is resistant to condensation and moisture.

  • Selecting a reliable roofing contractor

Never settle for roof contractors who do not have the proper credentials or work experience. They may offer cheap services, but it will cost you greatly in the future.

Instead, offer the job to a well-known professional who will deliver top-quality roof installation. Ensure that the contractors references are legitimate or look for recommendations from previous clients who have had an excellent experience with a particular contractor.

  • Using quality underlayment

Hourly Roof Painting Rate Warning: < $25 Per Hour

We must warn our readers of the risks associated with hiring painters that are offering extremely low prices. These prices are not in line with industry standards, likely do not account for all the associated costs involved with roof painting and ultimately may result in an extremely poor quality outcome.

Polymer Coating For Concrete Roof Tiles

How to Paint Concrete Roof Tiles Like a Pro?

Concrete roof tiles are made from sand, Portland cement and metallic oxide pigments to form roofing slabs in imitation of asphalt shingles, roofing slates or traditional clay tiles. The wet concrete mixture is squeezed through a tile extrusion machine to form tile shapes that are cured under heat and humidity. Special acrylic polymer coatings applied to the concrete tile surfaces provide color and improve weather resistance. But these protective coatings need to be renewed roughly every 10 years.

How Do You Prepare Concrete Roof Tiles For Painting

  • Step 1: Inspect the roof.

Place an extension ladder against the side of your home so you can easily climb up to the roof. If the roof is steep, use a roof safety harness to keep you from slipping or falling. Next, look for any tiles that have cracks or tiles that are lifting from your roof. Take note of all of the damage, so you know what you need to repair or replace. If you are not comfortable climbing the roof, hire a roofing inspector to do it for you.

Tip: Only stand where the concrete tiles overlap to avoid cracking them by accident.

  • Step 2: Replace the damaged parts.

Starting on the lowest side of the roof, remove and replace all tiles that are badly damaged. Work your way towards the peak until you fix all the damage.

  • Step 3: Clean the roof.

Clean all debris and fungus on the roof using a power washer. Ensure that the washer has a hose that is long enough so that you can leave the machine on the ground. Start cleaning from the roofs peak and work your way down to avoid lifting any tiles.

If you do not have a power washer, lease one from a hardware store near you. Also, make sure that you have a helper up on the roof with you to help guide the machines hose so that it doesnt get stuck.

  • Step 4: Let the roof dry.
  • Step 5: Apply primer.

Once the primer dries properly, your concrete roof tiles are ready to paint.

Unsolicited Testimonial from Robert F I had a roofer, Hamilton Roofing paint my roof with your product. My air conditioner reading by 4pm was between 85 and 87 degrees with the thermostat at 74. I have a flat roof not attic I would assume no or little insulation. The temperature in my house started going down as they were painting! The next day and every day since the temperature has not gotten above 76 with the thermostat at 74. Most days it is 74 or 75. Frankly it is magical. My electric bill had been running 280 to 295 a month. The first partial month, my guess is 2 to 3 weeks, the bill was 190. I anticipate that it can be lowered even further with other adjustments. So thank you for your paint!

Tile roofs provide several significant advantages over other types. Tile constructions are resistant to pests and can withstand harsh weather conditions. They also have superior thermal properties that reduce ambient temperatures on the roof deck. Tile roofs come in a broad array of colors that can complement the appearance of your home. But perhaps most significantly, a properly installed tile roof can last more than 100 years with only modest care. If you need to know how to maintain a tile roof, follow these guidelines.

Create Support For Your Feet

Concrete Roof Painting Roof Tiles (Part 4)
  • Cut two sections of plywood, each measuring 2-foot by 2-foot, using an electric saw. Cut two pieces of carpet to fit the sections. Attach the carpet to the bottom of the plywood, using a hammer and capped roofing nails. Use the plywood to distribute your weight evenly across the roof tiles. Stand on one sheet of plywood until you are ready to walk. Move the free sheet to the next area and step onto it. Continue alternating the sheets as you move across the tiles.

Things to Remember When Painting Roof Tiles

In addition to having the right supplies and allowing enough time for the paint to dry, there are a few things to remember.

    • Check the Forecast: Avoiding painting in the rain or when rain is expected soon
    • Start Painting Late in the Morning: Preferably after 8-am in summer, 10-am in winter
    • Stop Painting After 12pm: This avoids excessive temperatures in the summer

What Is The Best Roofing Paint

    Spray Painting a Residential Roof

When it comes to choosing the best roof paint for your roof the first question you need to ask is…

What type of roof do you want to paint?

Metal roofs, terracotta or concrete tiles all require specific roof coatings that are designed for those applications. You may also need to clean and seal the roof prior to painting.

The correct primer will both seal and protect against corrosion on metal roofs and will fill and seal pitted concrete tile roofs as well as provide a suitable surface for effective topcoat adhesion.

You need to get this step right if you want your roof restoration to perform as expected.

The second question is why are you painting your roof?

Are you painting your roof to protect against corrosion and premature colour fading, eliminate algae and mould growth or dirt retention or to improve the heat reflective value of your roof so you stay cool inside during the hot summers?

Modern roofing paint is specifically formulated to achieve outstanding results for each specific application so it really pays to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve.
