How To Put A Skylight In A Corrugated Metal Roof

How to install a skylight video

Skylights for corrugated metal roofs are different from those for shingle or tile roofs. Its possible for an experienced installer to retrofit flashing and install a typical skylight on corrugated metal. However, a home improvement enthusiast should install a skylight thats designed for corrugated roofing. Similar to installing any skylight, the first step is preparing the area of the roof where the skylight will be installed.

1

Wear work gloves. Place the skylight unit on the roof at the desired location. Align the grooves on the skylight fins with the grooves on the corrugated roofing. Mark an outline along the outer edges of the fins with a felt-tip marker. Set the skylight unit aside.

2

Deduct the width of the fins on each side of the skylight and mark another outline on the roof to define the area to be cut out. Disregard the larger outline and proceed to the next step.

3

Remove the screws or nails from the metal roofing at the area inside the smaller outline. Use a power or cordless drill with a screw-tip attachment to remove screws. Use a nail bar and hammer to remove nails.

4

Install a 1/4-inch drill bit in the drill. Drill starter holes for a jigsaw blade at each corner of the smaller outline. Cut the outline using a jigsaw with a metal-cutting blade. Insert the tip of the blade in a starter hole to cut each side of the outline. Remove the cutout section of roofing.

Should You Purchase Curb

There are two main types of skylights available for purchase and installation: curb-mounted and deck-mounted.

Curb mounted requires a box structure for the unit to set upon. When replacing a skylight, these can be used without needing to re-flash the skylight at the same time as long as flashing is in good condition.

Both deck mounted skylights and curb mounted skylights include three layers of protection from water leaks. Their skylight and flashing kits come with everything a roofer needs to eliminate mistakes that can lead to leaks.

The pre-attached deck seal on all deck mounted skylights provides a seal between the frame and roof deck. This metal is where the skylight is nailed into the decking creating a seal that compresses to the decking.

It is important not to install a skylight window for flat roof where the roof is at its lowest point.

Indeed, by installing your skylight where your flat roof is the lowest, you risk water infiltration during heavy rain or snowmelt.

Furthermore, the Association des maîtres couvreurs du Québec estimates that a skylight must extend a minimum of 300 mm beyond the roof surface, and the waterproofing membrane must be installed at the junction of the skylight frame and the roof surface.

In addition, it is important to insulate between the ceiling and the roof. The skylight must be perfectly watertight to prevent water infiltration, while allowing condensation to drain away.

Skylights And Flat Roofs

Now, let’s talk flat roofs. Believe it or not, your roof doesn’t need to have a slope to install a skylight. In fact, VELUX has a few options for skylights made specifically for flat roofs.

The main issue skylights face on flat roofs is rainwater collecting on top. VELUX’s Flat Roof Skylights are slightly curved on top to prevent this. With a slight curve and our Clean, Quiet & Safe glass, rainwater whisks right off the skylight while featuring a clean interior appearance.

What To Expect When Replacing A Skylight

Replacing a skylight is often an easier task than installing a new skylight. Why? The original roof design includes a skylight frame. A rough opening has been structurally designed to ensure a watertight fit will be possible when the skylight is ultimately put in.

During this replacement process, a responsible roofing company will cover any possessions before beginning the install to protect your items. As with a new installation, a skylight replacement creates a big mess during the process. However, at Ranch Roofing, we ensure a mess free turnover once the process has been completed. The new skylight fits into the existing hole. Next, the roofing team seals the exterior and ensures a watertight fit. On the inside, there will be some painting and drywall work necessary to complete the job to make it cleanly match the rest of your homes interior.

Types Of Skylights And Roof Windows

How to Install a Roofing Skylight | Roofing Insights

There are three basic types of skylights: fixed skylights, venting skylights, and tubular skylights . A fourth variety, roof windows, is a type of venting skylight used where circumstances make it practical. Roof windows are bigger with the same orientation as the surrounding roof. They are typically used on roofs where the roof slope is more vertical.

Tubular skylights

A lot of comfort has been included in recent skylight models. Today we know many motorized venting skylights, controlled with a wall switch or wireless with a remote control. Fully automated models come equipped with rain sensors, closing the skylight as soon as the first raindrops fall. Some of them even contain a small heat recovery unit or recuperation unit which delivers over 75% heat recovery of the exhaust air.

This way you can ventilate your home with fresh air during colder months without affecting your indoor temperature, avoiding unnecessary heat loss, cold draughts and heating bills.

Can It Be Installed At Any Time

Although you can have a skylight window for flat roof installed at any time, it is always preferable to undertake its installation at the same time as youre reroofing.

Not only will you minimize installation costs, but you will also ensure maximum watertightness since everything will have been done simultaneously.

Are Vented Skylights Worth It

If your shed gets too hot sometimes, adding a skylight may well add to the heat problem. Having a vented skylight will let the heat rise and travel out of the skylight, keeping the shed cooler. The additional airflow that a vented skylight will provide will also help keep the inside of your shed dry.

Whether the vented type is worth it to you will depend on your situation. Does your shed have at least partial shade? Do you live in a hot climate? Does your shed face in a way that your skylight will have to be placed on the south side? Will your vent opener be easily accessible?

There are skylights with automatic vents available that use a motor to open the vent, but these are naturally more expensive than a crank-operated type and require electricity in your shed to operate it. Only you can examine your particular situation and the price of the vented skylights available to you and decide if the vented skylight will be worth getting for you.

The Reality Is The Exact Opposite

Brent Simmons is the owner of Restoration Roofing in Memphis, Tennessee. In addition to running a successful roofing company, Simmons is also an expert when it comes to installing skylights. He doesnt understand why more roofers dont install skylights, especially because learning this skill can generate more revenue for companies.

The roofers that hate it are just scared of them,

Simmons says, which has led to him being one of the few roofers in his area who installs skylights.

As you can imagine, this gives Simmons a huge advantage over his competitors, especially because Simmons does both roofing and skylights. Its not uncommon for Simmons to do a roofing job and end up selling the homeowners skylights as well. Simmons has also been subcontracted by other roofing companies to do skylights for them.

Simmons doesnt understand why more roofers dont learn this trade. He says the skylights are easy to install. They even come with a set of instructions on the packaging.

I really do believe they improve quality of living in a home,

Simmons adds.

His belief has ingratiated him to prospective customers who are unsure if a skylight is a wise undertaking for their home. After Simmons informs them of the benefits that come from having a skylight, like increased sunlight in the home, many feel comfortable purchasing a set for themselves.

As a Velux-certified installer, Simmons future is in good shape.

This skylight thing has become my passion,

he says.

Skylights offer a way to bring more natural light into a room and help it feel more spacious. They can also help keep a house cooler by allowing hot air to escape. Most skylights are installed in an attic or ceiling, and by following a few steps you will be on your way to having a house with a skylight.

How To Install A Skylight In Your Home

Anyone looking to bring a warm and inviting feel to their space should consider installing residential skylights in their roof. These windows have the power to brighten up even the dimmest, darkest spaces, and they can even help you regulate the temperature in your home throughout the year. Surprisingly, adding a skylight is not all that complicated of a process, and you can actually do it yourself if you have the right skills, tools and knowledge. In this guide, well go over the basics of skylight installation to help you master it.

A Maintained Skylight Is A Clear Light

Proper skylight maintenance doesnt end with installation. We recommend keeping your skylight clean and clear with regular check-ups and maintenance throughout the year. Keep an eye on the ceilings, floors and walls in your skylight room for possible leaks or damp spots. Any water residue found could indicate a leak in the skylight and possible build up of mold. Also be sure to dust your skylights from the inside and cleaned on the outside to ensure clear window viewing.

What You Need To Know Before Installing A Skylight

How To Install A Skylight

Youll want to choose placement of the skylight carefully to prevent glare. It can make the shed too hot to be comfortable, especially if you are using the shed as a workshop. It can also cause fading in some materials you may store in the shed. There are filters you can add to the skylight or add a shade to counteract the glare.

To keep the shed from getting too hot, choose a skylight that is made from double-insulated glass that has been tempered with low-E coatings. A bronze-tinted skylight can also help, especially if the skylight is on the west or south side.

The shape of the skylight can affect how the light shines into the room. Skylights with straight sides focus the light in a straight line, but there are some with flared sides that spread the light out a bit. To mitigate potential damage from falling debris such as tree branches, there are domed skylights available.

These allow leaves and other tree debris to slide off. However, these only come in plastic instead of glass. One good thing is that the plastic can be coated with dark or reflective solar film to minimize heat buildup in your shed.

You may need to contact your local building authority to find out if you need a permit to install a skylight. The rules seem to be a bit confusing. Generally, installing a new skylight, door or window requires a permit. Replacing any of these things does not.

Are Skylights Out Of Style

We dont think so! Depending on the architectural style of your home, skylights can add a good deal of aesthetic appeal, illuminating the interior with gorgeous natural light. In fact, skylights are making a comeback, as many people are discovering or rediscovering their beauty.

That said, a common worry about skylights used to be that they are not very efficient. Fortunately, skylight technology has come a long way. Not only are todays skylights more energy efficient than they ever used to be, but some Velux models come with built-in solar panels, for eco-friendly energy use, and sensors that enable them to close at the first sign of bad weather.

Types Of Roof Skylight Glass

Your choice of skylight glass will determine how durable your skylight is. Each type of glass can have features and treatments to keep out UV light, insulate better and generally improve performance. Well discuss these features after a quick explanation of the types of glass.

  • Plexiglass: This is not technically a form of glass its acrylic and also called poly glass. It is a sturdy and lightweight material that you may want to consider because it is so inexpensive but it has drawbacks. Acrylic will scratch if debris or hail hits it. It allows in more UV rays than other skylight materials, and these rays are the main culprit behind faded furniture and flooring. This same UV exposure will wear down the acrylic itself, which may eventually crack. Over time, acrylic may also yellow, distorting the light and view out of your skylight.
  • Tempered skylight glass: Tempered glass is scratch-resistant and heat-treated for strength. But, if it does break, it shatters into a thousand virtually harmless granules. By not creating large shards, tempered glass is safer. It also insulates from noise better than acrylic.
  • All of these skylight materials may be single-, double- or triple-pane thick. Sometimes this allows for unique features, like gas insulation.

    Skylights And Hail Damage

While glass manufacturers continue to make advances in impact resistance, hail remains a challenge. Plexiglass is the worst choice when it comes to hail resistance, as it may scratch and will break much easier than glass. Tempered and laminated glass resists small and medium hail quite well, but there is always the possibility of abnormally large hail breaking through a roof skylight. When that happens, skylight repair or replacement are your only options.

But skylight repair doesnt have to be expensive. Some skylight manufacturers offer warranties that cover hail damage, and home insurance can provide you with an additional layer of protection.

You can also use exterior skylight covers to protect skylights from hail. For example, wire cages may defend acrylic skylights, though they may spoil the view. It is ideal to have the covers or shades produced by the manufacturer so that they wont void the overall warranty on the product.
