How Many Square Feet In A Square Of Roofing Shingles

Why Is It Important

How Many Bundles Of Roofing Shingles In A Roofing Square?

A roofing square is an important measurement for roofers. It is the most common way to measure a roofs size. Roofers use this measurement to calculate the amount of material they will need to cover a roof. This measurement is also used to price a new roof. A roofing square is equal to 100 square feet.

Roofers will measure the length and width of a roof and divide it by 100. This will give them the roofs square footage. Most roofs are not perfect squares, therefore this measurement may be difficult to calculate without a roofing square ruler or tool such as a credit card that is 100-square inches long.

Count The Sheathing Pieces

The easiest method to figure your square footage is to estimate using the exposed roof sheathing. If youre shingling over your old shingles, then this method wont work. But if you are completely removing your old roofing or completing a new build, then this method works for you.

A complete piece of roof sheathing is 4 x 8. Thus, the square footage of one piece is 32 feet squared. Count up all the sheets on all sides of your roof. Add them up. Then account for half or quarter pieces on the edges and roughly add them up to make complete pieces.

Once complete, you can multiply the number of sheathing pieces you have by 32, which will give you a fairly accurate picture of the square footage of your roof.

How Many Shingles Do I Need For A 2424 Garage

For this example, well use the same type of roof a simple gabled roof. For our purposes, well say that the roof extends 1.5 around each side.

Well first calculate one face of the roof. The length of the roof is 24+1.5+1.5, which equals 27. The roof pitch is 4:12, which means the width of the roof is about 12.5. Add 1.5 of overhang to this number and you get 14 of roof width on one roof face.

Multiply 27 by 14 and you get 378 square feet for one roof face. The total roof area is 756 square feet. Divide this number by 100 to determine the amount of roof squares youll need, which equals 7.56 roofing squares.

Multiply 7.56 roofing squares by 3 bundles per square. Thus, 23 bundles of shingles are required to cover a 24×24 garage with 1.5 overhangs on all sides.

How Many Shingles Are In A Bundle

Roof shingles are packaged and sold in bundles. Both architectural or laminate shingles come in bundles, which are also a standard pack size in order to make buying roofing supplies a more fool-proof process. A bundle includes enough shingles to cover a third of a square, therefore meaning you will need three bundles per roofing square.

The number of shingles in each bundle will vary depending on the size of an individual shingle. Smaller shingles may have up to 30 shingles in a bundle, while larger shingles may have as few as 15 shingles per bundle. As most bundles are supplied with 3 bundles per square, to find out how many bundles you need, you would just multiply the roofing square measurement by 3.

So if you need enough shingles to cover 20 squares, you would multiply 20 by 3, giving you a result of 60. This means you would need to order 60 bundles of shingles to have enough to complete your roof.

Watch out for some manufacturers which have 4 bundles per square, in which case you would need to multiply your square measurement by 4 to determine how many bundles you need. To be sure that you dont run out while working on your project, it is always worth ordering extra bundles for the sake of contingency.

How Many Sq Feet Does A Bundle Of Roofing Shingles Cover ...

Alright, lets start with the basics. First, you have to determine the size of your roof. Roofs are measured in squares. A square in roofing terms is equal to 100 square feet. The average home is approximately 30 squares, meaning that their roof is 3,000 square feet. Here is a simple way to figure out the measurement of your roof.

First, you need to find the square footage of the base of your home. Use a tape measurer to find the length and width of your home. If its irregularly shaped, divide the home into geometrical shapes, find the area of each, then add them together. Once you know the square footage of the base of your home, find the pitch. Youll see directions to finding the pitch of your home in the section below.

Now, youll need the pitch and square footage to find the size of your roof. Look on the chart below for the correct multiplier that matches your slope. Youll see that a pitch of 6/12 has a multiplier of 1.12. To find your roof size, multiply the square footage by the proper multiplier. The total is the total square footage of your roof!

How Many Square Feet In A Roofing Square

Well, heres a question that has bugged many a homeowner. It may sound as simple as taking a look at your roof and estimating what would equal a square and ask your contractor to come up with some magic. Well, it doesnt really work that way.

Its not only doctors or musicians that have jargon specific to their industry and workplaces, but also something common in every organization and industry. This also makes it true for roofing contractors. Whereas the words may mean one thing to you the outsider, they have a totally different meaning to people in a specific industry.

    How To Calculate Shingles

To calculate the number of shingles youll need, youll need first to measure the square footage of your roof, which is covered above.

Once you have the square footage, divide that number by 100. This will tell you how many roofing squares you have. If your roof is 4500 square feet, divide this number by 100 and youll get 45.

Since we know that most shingles require three bundles to make a square, youll multiply 45 times 3 to find out how many bundles you will need. In this case, youll need 135 bundles of shingles.

If you want to take it a step further and calculate the amount of individual shingles youll need for your project, multiply 135 by the number of shingles indicated on the bundle.

How To Measure A Roof For Shingles

What is a Roofing Square? (How Big)

There are several different methods to calculate the square footage of your roof. If you remember back to grade school, youll recall that youll multiply the length times the width to find the area of a rectangle.

If you are lucky enough to have a simple roof, say a gabled roof with two identical sides or even a single sloping roof, then calculating your roof area will be a breeze. On the other hand, if you have a roof with hips and multiple gables, then youll need to spend a bit more time calculating your roof square footage.

Here are several ways to measure roof area for shingles.

Calculating The Area Of A Complex Roof

Areas of complex roofs with multiple hips and valleys take the most time to calculate. Start by making a rough sketch of the roof. To simplify the calculation, break down the sketch into rectangles and right triangles , then take as many measurements of the roof as you can to match the sides of the rectangles and triangles on the sketch.

Use visual cues from the existing roof shingles or roof sheathing to determine square lines off eaves edges or ridges. These cues will help you measure the lengths of the sides of the rectangles and triangles. For instance, the cutout slots on shingled roofs run perpendicular to the eaves, and nail rows in sheathing are pretty close to square also. It is difficult sometimes to get accurate measurements. Dont get too concerned though just round lengths to the nearest 6 in.

With the sketch filled in with measurements, you can determine the size of the roof area. The area of a rectangle is length multiplied by width, whereas the area of a right triangle is the length of the two sides that meet at the 90-degree corner multiplied together and divided by two .

Tally the square footages of all the rectangles and triangles, which will give you the total square footage for the roof. The example here shows the calculation for a roof with two hips.

Determine The Number Of Roofing Squares On The Roof

After calculating your roofs total square footage, you have to convert the figure into roofing squares. Its the easiest part of the calculation process. You need to divide the overall square footage by 100 to get the number of roofing squares.

For instance, if the total square footage of a roof is 1,800 square feet, consider dividing it by 100 to get 18, the number of roofing squares on the rooftop.

How To Calculate Number Of Roofing Shingles

Fortunately, you don’t have to make a haphazard shingle estimate when planning for your roofing project: your roof size and chosen shingle type will guide the purchase process.

Shingles are sold in prepackaged bundles, not individually. Roofing manufacturers take the guesswork out of how many bundles you need per square-it’s listed in the specifications of each shingle they make. The specs for any given shingle will tell you how many bundles make up a square, how many shingles are in a square, and even the approximate number of nails you’ll need per square.

Often, three bundles of prepackaged asphalt shingles make one square, as is the case with the Timberline® HDZ Shingles. That said, the number of bundles you need can vary depending on shingle design. For example, five bundles of architectural asphalt shingles with artisan-crafted shapes, such as the Grand Sequoia® Shingle, cover one square. Once you know the number of squares of material your roof needs, check the shingle manufacturer specifications so you get your hands on exactly what you need.
