Curling Or Mildly Damaged Shingles

How to Replace or Repair a Damaged Shingle by RoofingIntelligence.com

Repairing a curling or mildly damaged shingle can be a three-step DIY project.

  • Spread asphalt roofing cement beneath the curling or broken part of the shingle with a putty knife

  • Nail the edges into place with a roofing nail or two if sealing a tear.

  • Seal over the top of the nail holes and any other open areas with roofing cement.

  • You can also use roofing sealant, which costs about $4 per tube, to repair curling shingles.

If a piece of shingle is broken or rotten, youll need to replace it with a new one. Again, youll need to buy shingles by the bundle at an average cost of $30 to $50 per bundle. But you can store the remaining pieces for future use.

How To Repair Or Replace Your Roof

There are two ways to describe what you see happening to your roof shingles. Both are mostly used interchangeably, but there are some subtle differences between the two descriptions.

Curling is the most common problem with roof shingles. Curling is when the corners of the shingle loosen and curl together. Curling shingles will expose the roof underneath, which can cause further damage to your house. A curled shingle usually indicates a problem with the shingles themselves or the way the shingles were installed.

Buckling describes a shingle that is raised in the middle. A buckle forms when moisture is trapped under the shingle. This is most likely a sign of poor ventilation.

Curling and buckling are the most common phrases used to describe problems with roof shingles. You may also hear the term fishmouthing or blistering. Fishmouthing or cupping refers to when the edges of the single rise slightly in the middle. Blistering refers to the bubble or blister that occurs when gas tries to escape from the layers below the shingles. Whatever you call it, it means your roof needs repair.

Over time, your asphalt shingles face the cumulative effects of moisture, sunlight, and temperature fluctuations, causing the shingles to curl or lift. If your roof has extensive dull or darkened areas with missing surface grain, it could be time for a new roof. However, multiple cupped and curled shingles can be easily repaired by trained roofing professionals.

What Questions Should I Ask My Roofer

To find the best roofing contractor near you, there are a number of questions you should ask. Below are some of the most important ones to address.

    • Are your workers licensed?

    • Can you provide proof of liability and workers comp insurance?

    • What permits are necessary and are these included in the estimate?

    • What is the quality warranty for work done on the roof?

    • What types of damage are not included in that warranty?

    • If the roof requires replacement, does removing the old roof factor into the cost estimate?

    • What will you do with the leftover debris?

    • Do you use ladder stabilizers or standoffs to protect the gutters?

    • How will you protect my landscaping while youre working on the roof?

    • What are the plans to clean up the property after the repairs are complete?

    • What will you do if theres bad weather during my repair project?

    • Is your company doing the project, or will you work with a subcontractor?

If youre hiring someone to repair or replace the roof on your house, you want to ensure they will do exactly what you need at a reasonable cost. On top of that, all costs should factor into your initial estimate with no hidden fees. You should also make sure they will be respectful of your landscaping, gutters, siding, and all other parts of your property.

Protecting Your Property From Wind Damage In Advance

If you want to protect your property from wind damage in the future, using lighter weight landscaping materials like mulch or shredded bark , keeping trees trimmed clear of the roof, and having your roof checked out right away if you think there are wind damaged shingles or other problematic spots and you should do this before you experience high winds or other potentially dangerous weather, especially if you live in an older home or property that hasnt had the roof inspected or updated in a while.

You may also want to consider permanent manual or automatic storm shutters if you live in an area thats particularly likely to experience storms that include high winds if you go the automatic route make sure you can still operate them manually if the motor fails at an inopportune time.

Temporary plywood covers can be kept on hand if you dont have permanent shutters and a storm or other weather event is upon you.

Garage doors can also be reinforced with wood or metal stiffeners that you can attach if a storm is on the horizon.

You should also remove or anchor loose objects like BBQ grills, deck or outdoor furniture, fountains, and even trash cans in the event of an impending storm.

If you live in or own a mobile home, youre especially at risk for wind damage or even more serious problems. Anchored mobile homes can be significantly damaged when winds reach 80 miles per hour, and unanchored homes are even more at risk.

One Break The Seal On The Target Shingle

The images below depict Sedona Dynasty with ArmourZone shingles.

    • In the photo below, the target shingle is located.
    • The first step obviously requires the removal of the nails holding that shingle to the roof deck. To access the nails, the shingle will need to be lifted, but it is likely bonded to the shingle below by the shingles asphalt sealant spots. Although this sealant bond is quite strong , it can be broken by sliding a flat pry bar carefully under the target shingles edge.
    • This sealant separation is best done in cool weather, as the sealant bond will be more easily sheared by the pry bar when cool in hotter weather, the sealant will be more gooey and tenacious, and harder to separate cleanly.

A word of caution: In cooler weather, the shingles will be stiffer than in warmer weather. Exercise care to avoid distorting the shingles more than necessary.

    • Lastly, remember breaking all those shingle-to-shingle sealant bonds? Well, although the new roof shingle will likely seal to adjacent shingles in time with enough sun warmth, it is recommended to manually seal the new shingle in place now. Merely apply three small spots of asphalt plastic roof cement under the new shingles tabs, evenly spaced along the shingle length, and press the shingle flat down into place.
    • Seal down any surrounding shingles that may have had their sealant bond separated in the same way. This ensures the roofs wind resistance will continue as before, uninterrupted.

Once you have removed the shingle, it’s time to apply some asphalt roofing cement to the back of your new shingle. Make sure when you are reinstalling your shingles, you are working from the bottom upwards. Once your shingle is coated with the roofing cement, you can then slide the new shingle into place on the roof and use a hammer to nail it into place.
