If you plan on building and installing your own gambrel roof, youll have to draw out plans first to determine the proper dimensions. Once you have the plans, you can cut and construct the rafters before installing them on your structure.

HOW LONG SHOULD A ROOF LAST?ELEMENTS

A lot of elements play a role in maintaining the integrity of the roof, but as a homeowner, the most important components to pay attention to are the underlayment, ventilation, and material.

Assembling Your Roof’s Substrate

  • 1Cover your rafter trusses with plywood sheathing. Put down your first sheet of plywood at the corner of one end of the roof. Make sure its lying horizontally across the exposed rafters, and that the edges are flush with the edges of the end rafters. Drive a nail into each corner of the plywood to hold it in place temporarily.XResearch source
  • Most constructions experts recommend using 716 in oriented strand board for small-scale roofing projects.XResearch source
  • Plywood sheathing will provide structural support for your new roof, as well as give you a flat, stable surface to attach your other roofing materials too.
  • 2Measure and cut additional plywood to fill in any gaps in the sheathing. Plywood is sold in large sheets, which means that youll most likely need to use multiple sheets and cut them to fit. Try to cover the remaining space using as few pieces as possible, starting from the lower portion of the roof.XResearch source
  • Its important to cut your plywood so that the end of each section covers half the width of the rafter its resting on. That way, the neighboring section will fit in easily beside it, and youll have a nice solid surface to nail into.XResearch source
  • Make all your cuts with your plywood oriented the same way to ensure that the strand grain is running in a single direction. A consistent grain pattern will increase the strength of your roof sheathing.
  • Warning: Avoid climbing onto the roof until the plywood has been completely secured from the bottom.

How Do You Install Roof Trusses On A Garage

Hillside Renovation: 27. The garage gets a roof.

After you have finished the process of creating your own garage trusses, then you will need to continue with installing them. You dont know how to install roof trusses on a garage? Just read onward to find out how to do it!

  • Initially, the first requirement here is to measure the garage area, as this will determine how many trusses you will need, if you have enough or if you need to create more. Once you have the measurements done and the necessary amount of trusses near you, then you can move onward to the next step.
  • The next logical step here is to figure out the location of each of those trusses. Create a plan and determine where each board will be placed, as this will allow you to obtain the desired outcome faster.
  • Once you have the marked areas, then all you need to do is to use a drill and screws in order to secure these trusses to the side of the wall. You will have to talk with a person and tell them to help you, because the trusses need to be held if you want to secure them tightly.
  • You might need to install brackets in the wall if you have some trusses that are located at an angle. These do require a lot of attention, so do try to secure them in the best possible way, because otherwise you are bound to face some issues as time passes, especially if you are located in a region that is prone to tornadoes and other things like that.
  • Do prepare properly and create a plan beforehand, to ensure that you bring the best experience.

This Is My Personal Favorite As It Adds A Lot Of Overhead Storage Space

Most of us have seen a number of old-fashioned barns with their tall roofs that have multiple slopes to them. What you may not realize is that this gambrel style of roof was not designed as a fashion statement. It was in fact created to build a roof that could stand up to the snows of deep winter found I many parts of the world. Although the general layout of the rafters might not seem to be that strong, the leveraged design makes them far stronger than they look.

Having two differing slopes allows rain and snow to slide off the roof and onto the ground. At the same time, the steeper sides of the roof give you a lot more usable storage space, especially for taller items. Like the gable style roof, this one is relatively easy to build and can be sheathed in wood and covered with shingles or sheet metal for added protection and durability.

Take a look at this how-to video:

    Pros
This style of roof offers plenty of extra space for storage without added expense Not recommended for areas of high wind or those with heavy snowfall
Simple construction with two roof beams and a series of gusset joints If not constructed properly tend to be structurally weak
Fewer materials mean lowered construction costs Need to be waterproofed at the ridges to prevent leaks regularly

How To Build Roof Trusses For A Garage For Maximum Ceiling Height

If you wonder how to build a roof truss, wellit is easy to do. You only need to put on your best attention while learning about this, and you are halfway to making it yourself.

Common trusses are planned to support up to 40o span, which you can get in todays houses. If you wonder how to maximize the ceiling height for the garage, you should know that it is genuinely possible to do. A roof trust can make a roof with a span of up to 80o without additional support, but that will be impractical and expensive to do.

Making such trusses that enable you to maximize the ceiling height is similar to making other trusses you commonly find in houses nowadays. Heres how to build garage roof trusses.

  • Plan how your trusses will look like
  • Planning isnt merely linked to getting the suitable materials for the trusses. Planning how far you will go for the slope is what you need to do in this step. Not to forget, you should consider what kind of roof you are willing to use as your garage roof. This is required to prepare the right timber product capable of accommodating the weight of the roof itself.

  • Purchasing the materials
  • Now that you know the budget and what kind of materials you are using for the truss, its time to purchase it. For sample purposes, we are referring to make garage roof trusses with timbers.

    Gambrel Garage Roof Style

A gambrel garage style roof is your typical barn-style roof. With a double-sloped design on either side of the roof, this style of roof also provides the most interior headspace, which makes it the perfect candidate for the addition of an attic.

The gambrel garage roof style is also popular, although not as common as the gable garage roof style.

The curved roof is the most time-consuming part of this project. Here are some tips to make the job go smoothly:

    • Use a jigsaw to cut the curved rafters. Don’t worry about making the curves perfect. The roof sheathing will smooth over bumps and dips.
    • The gaps between the pieces of sheathing at the ridges will allow the ridge cap shingles to curve gently over the ridges. If you place the sheathing pieces tightly together, you’ll get a sharp ridge and the shingles will crack when you bend them.
    • Cut full-size shingles into 4-in. wide strips with a utility knife, using a framing square as a guide. Each of the three tabs on a full shingle is about 12 in. wide., so you’ll get nine small shingles from each full shingle.

How Much Will Replacing A Garage Roof Cost

The cost of the material is one of the most important things you should consider when calculating the projects overall cost. Luckily, this is a factor you can easily control if youre operating on a tight budget. By choosing more cost-effective materials, you can save money and control how much you spend.

However, keep in mind that less expensive materials often have a shorter lifespan than those that cost more. Once youve picked the type of roofing material you want to install, its time to calculate other aspects that factor in the roof replacement process.

Another crucial factor to consider is the size of your garage. This is something you cant control. To make it easier, break down the square foots cost to get the most accurate calculation of how much materials you need.

Besides the size of the roof and the type of material, many other aspects can factor in the cost. Depending on your roofs condition, you might also need to replace the flashing, decking, vents, or gutters. If all of this seems overwhelming, its best to leave the estimate to licensed roofing professionals.

How To Build Roof Trusses For A Shed

The roof trusses for sheds are one of the most vital pieces to design. These consist of 2 rafters that will hold up the structures roof. Once completed, the roof trusses are installed and lifted onto the top part of shed frames.

The trusses you require may depend upon the sheds length. The longer your shed is, the more roof trusses you will have to make. The good thing about roof trusses is that they are simple to construct.

    Step #1

Begin by determining the measurements of the roofs slope. This will be the rafters length. If your roof has a long slope on one of the sheds side, one of your rafters should be longer.

So, know the number of the roof trusses youll need, then double the number for you to acquire the number of the rafters youll need when building the roof trusses.

    Step #2

Cut the rafters from 2×4 piece of wood. Cut it to the length you require and add the plumb cut to its ends. This plumb cut should be a 45-degree angle cut.

    Step #3

Cut the bottom cord of the roof trusses.

    Step #4

Make the gussets, which are the half-inch thick plywood pieces that will cover the 3 ends of the roof trusses.

    Step #5

The saltbox garage roof style is also common however, it is considered a runner-up to the gambrel garage roof style in popularity.

How To Build A Garage Roof

Hillside Renovation: 27. The garage gets a roof.

This step by step diy project is about how to build a garage roof. Building a roof for a single car garage is easy, but there are a few thing you should take into account, such as the shape and structure of the rafters. Build the components from weather-resistant lumber, if you want to build a durable roof for your garage. A front and a back overhang will add style to your construction.

First of all, you should remember that in most of the cases you need a building permit, when making a garage. Therefore, we recommend you to plan every aspect form the very beginning and to make sure the plans comply with the local building codes. Work with attention and with great care, if you want to build a rigid structure that will support the weight properly.

We strongly recommend you to use tongue and groove plywood sheets, if you want to get tight connections. Secure the sheets to the rafters with nails / screws every 6-8. In addition, if you want to enhance the look of the shed by fitting trims, we recommend you to leave an overhang of about 3/4 over the end rafters. Use a good miter saw to cut the ends of the trims before attaching them into place with finishing nails. Dont forget to check the rest of our garage building projects.

    Gable Garage Roof Style

The gable garage roof is your typical, A-frame roof style. With a central ridge and a simple, symmetrically-sloped roof, the gable frame offers a simplistic, traditional look to your property. The garage door is typically placed below the gable on single-car garages, but can be placed on the gable or side walls on larger multiple-car garages.

The gable or A-frame garage roof style is the most common garage roof style.

    Garage Construction & Design

Garage construction is essentially the same as that of a house, both in process and usually in the materials used. Though a standard garage is of course a simpler structure, it is still subject to building permits to ensure it meets code.

Building begins with the laying of a foundation, most commonly some kind of slab. Unlike home construction, however, where walls are framed in place, garage walls are typically constructed one at a time alongside the foundation and then raised. Temporary bracing holds them in place, a mudsill is attached to the foundation with concrete anchors, and then the walls are secured to the mudsill.

The walls are constructed with rough openings for doors and windows in typical fashion, with headers providing support.

Ceiling joists are added to the tops of the walls to support and connect the structure. Rafters are added to the joists, and then the ridge board is added to the tops of the rafters to hold them in place. This forms the skeleton for the roof, which oftentimes matches the homes roofing and is finished in the same way, with sheathing, underlayment, and then shingles.

The windows and doors are set in place, and then the siding is installed in this order: insulation, sheathing, building paper or house wrap, and then the siding. Finally, any exterior trim, such as the fascia and closed cornices, are added to complete construction.
