How To Place Shingles On Roof

Install The Flashing On Your Roof

How to Install Roof Shingles | Ask This Old House

The second step for installing roof shingles is to get any roof flashing in place that is not already there. Every one of the valleys in your roof, or the sections where one part of your roof runs into another part at a different angle, needs to have flashing added in.

Roll out flashing in each of these sections and lock it down using roofing nails at the outside edges, while leaving the center free of any nails. Nailing too close to the center of this flashing will result in leaks through your roof. As you are installing the shingles around valley flashing you have to remember to apply roofing cement underneath each row of shingles up close to the valley.

Also add flashing where the roof hits a wall of the house in the case of dormers or a multi-tiered roof. Add flashing around any chimneys or skylight windows to protect them against the elements.

What To Put On Shingles Once They Scab

To avoid further irritation and infection, it is important to keep the area clean and dry once the shingles scab over. A loose, dry scab will eventually fall off on its own. To speed up the process, you can use a cool, moist compress. Apply the compress for 20 minutes, 3-4 times a day. You can also apply lotion to the area to help with itching. Keep the area clean and dry, and avoid picking at the scab. If the area around the scab becomes red, swollen, or starts to weep, contact your doctor.

Installation

Now that you’ve conquered the underlayment and drip edge and plotted your course, it’s time to learn how to install roof shingles.

  • Work your way up and across to begin laying your courses. Be mindful of the proper nailing technique so that nails always hold the top edge of the course beneath it. For example: Hammer one nail about 2 inches from each end of a shingle. Then secure another nail an inch above each cutout. So, your next course of shingles should cover the nails by 1 inch vertically.
  • As you continue, follow the pattern of lining a full shingle up against the next and then nailing it into place. Follow the guideline specified by the manufacturer as each shingle style has its own cut pattern.
  • Cut your last shingle on each row to size, repeating all the way to the ridge. Once you’ve reached the ridge, bend the shingle over the ridge so that each side is equal and nail it into place with a single nail on each side.
  • Do the same with the next shingle, continuing this step until you get to the far edge of the ridge.
  • Cut the last ridge shingle to the length you need, but be sure that no part of the roof is exposed.

Tip: Be careful to drive nails straight rather than angled. Each shingle should be held by four nails. Six nails are preferred for areas that experience wind.

Plan Your Shingle Layout

One of the most important parts of learning how to install roof shingles is figuring out how to lay the shingles out. Plan your layout before you start nailing shingles in place.

Each shingle manufacturer will have a suggested layout and mounting technique that you can use to guide the process.

If you lay them out correctly, youll create a water- and impact-resistant barrier between your house and the elements. However, if you leave gaps or plan incorrectly, youll leave openings for water and moisture to get into your attic space.

With all defects repaired lay down new felt if necessary. Starting at the bottom of the roof, lay a strip clear across to the other side. Pay careful attention that it is straight with the edge most felt has lines drawn on it that can be used to line up the new shingles if the felt is installed absolutely straight. Most often felt is fastened with a simple heavy-duty staple gun staple every foot or so. Overlap the second piece about an inch and lay additional rows until the peak of the house is reached. Again, it is a good idea to snap a chalk line across the roof to make sure the felt is installed absolutely straight with the edge of the roof. If there is no ridge vent, leave the top piece extending over the far side of the ridge, where it can be folded down and stapled on top of the last piece to be installed on the other side.

Difficulty With Bumpy Surfaces

Shingles are meant to fit flat, even surfaces. When shingles are forced onto bumpy or gap-filled foundations, the old flaps will telegraph through to the new layer, making the top layer much harder to secure. This will almost certainly lead to problems later on as the shingles become more difficult to mount properly and accurately.

Proper Steps To Shingle A House Roof

  • A solid, watertight roof is absolutely essential to your home, but the asphalt shingles that protect your roof from the elements don’t last forever. The best shingles will last up to fifteen years, after which they must be replaced. With the right tools and material and cooperative weather, the project can be completed in a few days. But carefully consider the condition, location and pitch of your roof before deciding to do this project, which presents serious safety hazards to the do-it-yourselfer.

Only Stack Shingles On Flat Surfaces Whenever Possible

Some contractors will intentionally stack the shingle bundles over the roofs ridge. They may call this process breaking the bundles, which may help separate 3-tab shingles from one another. However, you must do this carefully. If you drop the bundles with force, you may damage them or the roof, especially in cold weather.

Also, breaking the bundles isnt recommended for laminate shingles because their two-layer construction resists bending. Flexing them could damage them or misalign the layers. It is ideal to lay them flat instead.

In the image above, you can see that the roofing team is unloading the shingle bundles with the help of a conveyor. The shingle bundles have been stacked correctly. If you were to stack the bundles higher than shown here, therefore concentrating the load of many bundles in a small area, you may cause long-term issues with the roof structure.

    Cut The Overhanging Shingle Ends

Cedar Shingles at a Wall/Roof Intersection

The seventh step is to cut the shingle ends off after the first 6 rows are installed.

On this project we got ahead of ourselves and forgot to cut the shingles after the first six rows.. But the process is the same.

You will use the straight edge of a spare shingle to line up your cut. Flip a shingle over and line the straight edge up with the 3/8 overhang of the lower shingle. On the top end you will hold the straight edge 3/8 off the drip edge.

Use your utility knife to cut along the straight edge of the shingle. It sometimes takes several passes with the knife to cut all the way through.

Now, clean the cut edges of the shingles by using a scrap piece of asphalt roofing to burnish the cut edge of the shingles that are installed on the roof.

    Gather The Right Tools

Installing a shingle roof is not a casual job you can complete in an hour or two. It takes skill, knowledge, and lots of equipment. Youll need the following roofing tools and materials before you get started:

    • Work gloves and boots

Acquiring all this equipment is expensive. If you dont have it on hand, you can likely rent it from a local home improvement store. However, if you have to buy or rent most of this equipment, youre probably better off spending that money on a professional installation from a local roofing contractor.

    Work From The Bottom Up

Not only are we working from the bottom of the roof, were also starting with the bottom-most layer, in terms of roofing components. The asphalt roof shingles are the visible part and the first line of defense against inclement weather, but whats underneath them really counts. The first material installed at the eave is the drip edge. It literally provides a clean, sharp edge for the start of the roof and protects the lower edge of the roof deck from water damage by preventing water from defying gravity and wicking back up before it leaves the roof.

Drip edge is installed under the ice and water at the eaves and on top of the ice and water and underlayment on the rakes.

    Install The Drip Edge

Metal drip edge isnt usually required , but it gives roof edges a nice finished look, prevents shingles from curling over the edge, and keeps water from running directly down your fascia boards.

Before you install the underlayment, fasten the drip edge that covers the fascia on the eaves. The whole length of the fascia is probably not perfectly straight, so dont snap a line just hold the drip edge snug against the fascia and fasten it through the top into the decking with roofing nails. Nail it every couple of feet.

Install the drip edge on the gable ends of the roof after you finish installing your underlayment. Start at the bottom side of the gable, and overlap the sections of drip edge a few inches as you work your way up the roof . Use a tin snips to cut the drip edge to size.

    Where To Nail Shingles

    How to Install Roof Shingles

Each shingle manufacturer has its own requirements forproper nailing, including where roofing nails should be placed. Roofingcontractors should follow those guidelines and take care not to overdrive nailsas this can lead to water infiltration.

Owens Corning® Duration® shingles, for example, provide a reinforced nailing zone, called SureNail® Technology a tough, engineered fabric strip embedded on the face of the shingle that offers outstanding nail pull-through and nail blow through resistance while providing a highly visible nailing target for roofing contractors. Its easy to see where the nails are supposed to go.

How To Install Wood Shakes And Shingles

Before you can install wood shingles on your roof, you need to create the vent structure or sheathing. This keeps them from warping in the dampness and heat.

Once the structure is in place, plan the layout of the shingles and nail them into the sheathing. Take care to measure the shingles placement throughout the job to make sure youre on the right track.

Is My Roof Suitable For Roof Shingles

Survey your existing roof structure to decide if it requires maintenance or strengthening before installing any shingles. Make a note of your roof construction you will need to have a decked roof fixed to rafters, or supported on a trussed roof structure.

You will need to measure the slope of your roof with a protractor. This will help determine whether you can fix shingles, and any preparation you need to do. See our three options below for more details.

    Roof deck

Roofing shingles must be laid on a roof deck fixed in accordance with the relevant British Standards & Codes of Practice. Shingles can be laid over existing roofing felt, but the surface must be flat and in good condition.

    Minimum roof slope 12.5 degrees

    Minimum deck thickness 12mm

    Underlay

Roofing felt underlay must be used on roof slopes below 20 degrees or a 1 in 5 gradient. Its good practice to always use a roofing underlay below shingles. Roofing felt underlay should be laid on the roof with 15cm end overlaps, and fixed by nailing with 10mm large-headed galvanised clout nails at 10cm intervals.

    Tear Off The Old Shingles

Its impossible to properly install new flashing and underlayment if you dont tear off the old roof beforehand. When tearing off the existing shingles, be sure to remove all the old nails or pound them flat. Protruding nails will tear holes in your new shingles. If you have movable items near your house and youre worried they might get damaged, relocate them. Invest in a few large tarps to protect your plants and landscaping and to catch the thousands of nails that will rain down off the roof. It can be downright impossible to remove old self-stick ice-and-water underlayment, but its OK if you have to leave it in place. And if at all possible, have the rented trash bin parked close to the house so you can toss in the old shingles right from the roof.

Roof planes that butt against vertical walls at the end of the shingle course are protected by metal step flashing at least 125 mm high and 125 mm wide . When applying the new shingles, each shingle course will be covered by a step flashing.

    Metal Step Flashing Pieces

There are two simple rules to follow:

    • Each flashing should overlap the one below by at least 75 mm , but not be visible below the shingle top lap.
    • Imbed each step flashing in a 75 mm wide application of asphaltic plastic cement, and nail in place. Then the end of each shingle overlapping a step flashing must also be well embedded in plastic cement.

To install the flashing piece on the first course, place it over the end of the starter strip. Place it so the tab of the end shingle covers it completely. Secure the horizontal flange to the roof deck using two nails. Do not fasten the flashing piece to the vertical wall. This will allow the flashing piece to move independently of any differential expansion and contraction that may occur between the roof deck and the wall. Place the second step flashing piece over the end shingle in the first course by positioning it 143 mm above the bottom edge of the exposed asphalt shingle.

Ensure You Have The Correct Tools Fixings And Materials

Shingles will typically come in strips or packs of strips, so it is important to the take the time to measure the area of your roof to determine how many you will need. At this stage, you should also make sure that your chosen shingles are suitable for your roofs pitch. Most metal and felt shingles can be used down to 10°, but this may not be the case for all of them. Some products, Coroshingle included, will also require detailing strips which will have to be fitted across the eaves, verge and ridge. These will be available in a range of colours to suit your shingles and provide a smart and neat finish. Again, you should measure the lengths to ensure you order the correct number.

As for fixings and tools, you should refer to the specific manufactures guide for a complete list, however you will almost certainly need:

    • Suitable adhesive sealant
    • 10mm large headed galvanised clout nails
