How To Fix A Small Hole In Your Roof

If you are looking to fix a small hole in your existing roof on your own, the first thing you need is some basic DIY knowledge. This means knowing how to use different tools and work safely up at high places. Some of the tools youll need include:-A tape measure- to get the correct measurements of your flat roof for cuts.-A box cutter or utility knife is used to cut through the damaged shingles and make more accurate cuts with a straight edge.-Roofing nails- to secure down any patches you make on your roof. Its best not to use screws as they will not hold down the patch as tightly.-A plastic putty knife- to help remove old asphalt shingles and place your replacement shingles correctly, without damaging them.-Nylon roofing cement -to seal up any cracks or a leaky roof that you notice while doing maintenance work on it. You can also use a caulk gun in place of the roofing cement if you have one.-A ladder- to get up onto your roof safely and have an excellent place to work from while you fix the hole in your roof.-Caulking gun -to seal any unpatched areas with asphalt shingles, such as vents or skylights on your roof. These are better sealed off since they dont require additional support.-A screwdriver replaces any damaged shingles during the roof repair process, such as if there are broken or missing nails in your roof patch. You can also use a drill for this purpose if needed.

Warning Signs Of A Hole In The Roof

Check your attic for one or more of the following warning signs of a hole in the roof:

  • Dripping. While water dripping from the attic ceiling is an obvious indication of a hole in the roof, its often not so easy to pinpoint the holes location. It could be several feet away from the drip.
  • Damp areas on your ceiling or walls. In your attic or upstairs, surfaces may actually be moist to the touch, or simply appear discolored. Unusual wall or ceiling bulges and peeling paint are also clues that you might have leakage from a hole in your roof.
  • Visible daylight. Inspect your attic on a sunny day. If you can spy one or more patches of daylight through the ceiling, unless your home is equipped with skylights, youve got a hole in your roof.
  • Missing or cracked shingles. If you can safely perform a roof inspection, check your shingles. Missing or cracked roofing shingles may mean a hole in the roof.

    Related Articles

Nail holes in a roof can come from nails that have slightly pulled out over time, holes that were not covered during a re-roof or nails that were pulled out of mounting holes when items like antennas or satellite dishes were taken down. In all cases, the holes will eventually conduct water through through the roof and cause a leak in your attic, warns Bill Ragan Roofing Company. But before you can fix nail holes, you have to find them, and that is the most difficult part.

    Tip

Wear gloves when working with sticky roofing cement. If possible, get the most inexpensive pair that you can find and treat them like they are disposable. Roofing cement is very difficult to remove once it comes into contact with a material. It may be in your best interest to use them for this project and then dispose of them.

If you find any nail heads that are sticking up from the roof, hammer them down and then coat the head with roofing cement.

DIY: Temporary fix for hole on the roof

Step 1: Climb onto your roof. As mentioned above, climbing your roof is extremely dangerous and you should always take the proper safety precautions before going on top of your house. Make sure your ladder is 100% secure before climbing up.

Step 2: Remove the shingles and nails that are covering the damaged area on your roof. Use a pry bar to slightly lift up the shingles above the damaged area

Step 3: Use a pry bar to slightly lift up the shingles above the damaged area. If the hole in your roofs plywood is irregular or an odd shape, use your reciprocating saw to cut out a square or rectangle shape around the hole. Remove the wood.

Step 4: Install a 2-by-4 plank underneath the hole the plank should be three times the width of the opening. Then, cut your plywood to be the exact size and shape of the hole. Make sure the plywood you are using is the same thickness as your existing roof. Then, insert the new plywood into the hole. Nail the plywood sheet to the plank underneath and cover the wood borders and bracing screws with roofing tar.

Step 5: Lay tar paper over the area with missing shingles, making sure the top of the paper is slipped under the flaps of the shingles above the now-repaired area. Nail the tar paper on every 12-18 inches along the perimeter. If you used more than one sheet of tar paper, nail down any overlapping areas, as well.

Before Attempting To Treat Any Spots Make Sure They Are Completely Dry

Always dry out the roof first before making repairs. You just need to dry out those parts that will be treated with cement or sealer.

You can use paper towels to dab dry small surfaces. One can use a torch but use caution to avoid unintentionally setting fire to your roof!

The roof will dry out faster if you wait for sunny weather. If you want to mend a wide area or the whole roof, youll need to make it cure on its own for a day or two.

How To Repair Aluminum Rv Roof

Have a metal roof on your RV? Heres how to seal and repair their punctures.

    Resealing aluminum RV roofs

For aluminum and other metal RV roofs, resealing is done with a special coating designed for the material, such as Dicors Metal RV roof coating. This forms a rubber-like top layer and is resistant to mildew and rust.

Of course, you wouldnt apply a thick white coating to a rounded metal RV like an Airstream. For these , sealing joints and rivets with a caulking gun is essential.

    Repairing punctures or tears

Depending on the size of the puncture, you may be able to repair your metal roof with a peel and stick patch. Make sure to buy one that is designed for metal roofs, as the adhesive formula is a little different. Simply clean the area, stick the patch over it, and roll out air bubbles with a small roller.

For more significant damages, the best way to repair a metal roof is by replacing the metal panel, which is a process that will vary depending on your particular RV.

If getting up on your metal roof is not something youre interested in doing, or its just something that you cant do anymore, then we suggest that you contact a professional metal roof repair and installation company, who can repair a roof in a safe manner and who will stand by and guarantee their work, meaning that you wont have to get up on the roof and check it yourself you can just trust that things are okay. If working on your roof is something youre comfortable with, contact Superior Products Inc. today to buy some of the best metal roof panels in Alaska.

    Install The Repair Patch

Apply a color-matched urethane sealant to the surface of the metal panel being repaired, staying just inside the marked pencil line. Apply the sealant liberally in the area, so that there are no gaps or voids at the leading edge of the patch.

Press the patch into place over the damaged area. The sealant should squeeze out from the edge of the patch along all sides. If there are areas where the sealant is not oozing, these are areas where moisture may later penetrate under the patch, causing a deterioration of the patch. Apply a little more sealant here to eliminate any gaps.

You should be comfortable working at some height if youre going to repair a roof leak on your own, even if its temporary. If you have questions or dont want to climb up on your roof which is definitely understandable work with a roof contractor.

  • If youre ready to go and cover or patch your roof, then youll need a couple of two by fours and some heavy plastic polyethylene sheeting thats large enough to cover the leaking section of the roof from the eaves to the peak with a couple extra feet in case you need to wrap it around spots in order to tape it in place.

  • Do the same thing with the other end and another set of two by fours.
  • Place the pair of two by fours along the eaves of your roof, and stretch the plastic to the ridge or the peak and down the other side for a few feet to make sure you have enough coverage.
  • Then use other pair of sandwiched two by fours to weigh down the poly sheeting on the other side, but dont attach or nail any part of this temporary cover to the roof.
