What Is A Bundle Of Shingles

A bundle refers to how the asphalt shingle manufacturer packages the product. The package or bundle must be able to be lifted and moved around the roof fairly easily, which is why the manufacturer limits each package to a manageable weight. The contractor will determine the number of bundles needed for a project based on the measurements taken and the number of squares on your roof.

While roofing squares make it easier to determine how many bundles of shingles your home’s roof requires, other factors play a role in the estimating process. If your roof features architectural details, it will have more rakes, valleys, and eaves, resulting in more starting and stopping points. Contractors will also consider the number of overhangs and dormersthese features add to the style of the home, but they can also lead to shingle waste during the installation. Your contractor will add in a waste factor and potentially adjust their charges depending on the complexity and pitch of your roof.

How Many Bundles In A Square

Shingles are purchased by the bundle and different types of shingles are different sizes and the bundles contain different amounts. Standard shingles measure 12 x 36 and come in bundles of 29. Each bundle will therefore cover around 33 square feet.

This means that there are 3 bundles of standard shingles per square of the roof. This is similar to other types of shingles that are different sizes, even if they contain fewer shingles per bundle. However, it is still best to double-check because sometimes there are some discrepancies.

Measure The Footprint Of The House

The footprint of a house is a bit different from square footage because it refers to the perimeter of the exterior walls at ground level.

Image credit: Aluminum Lock Roof Inc

Square footage, on the other hand, includes the entire area of the house within the walls, including additional stories. Since you only need one roof regardless of whether its a one-story or three-story house, the footprint is a more accurate starting point than square footage.

To measure the footprint, use a tape measure or wheel and measure the length of each side of the house. Be sure to measure all the way out to the roof overhang, as you can see in the picture above, since thats where the roof ends.

Also, make sure to include any additions to the house like sunrooms, garages, or other bump-outs. As you measure, record your findings on your diagram so that you know which measurement corresponds to which side. This will be important in the next step.

How Many Roofing Squares In 1200 Squares

Lumber lawsuit challenges the size of a 2×4

As I mentioned earlier, a roofing square is a unit of measurement for determining the size of a roof, and it is equivalent to 100 square feet.

This large unit helps calculate the number of materials you will need for your roof.

It is a unit used in expressing 100 square feet. This unit simplifies the grouping of roofing materials like tiles, shingles, etc.

Only a few producers let you do free roofing square calculators online. You can let a professional assess your roof or measure it yourself.

If you want to measure the number of roofing squares your roof has, measure the total square footage of the roof and use the amount to determine the number of roofing squares it has.

Ensure that you have all the necessary equipment to climb your roof safely. You will need a measuring tape, a pen and notebook , and a ladder. You may read our post if you dont know how to climb up the roof.

Be extremely careful while climbing the ladder to avoid slipping off. Measure each roof planes length and width. There may be more than two planes on the roof.

Some features that may cause your roof to have more than two planes are dormer windows, protruding garage, skylights, covered porches, and others. First, calculate each planes area.

To get the total square footage, sum up the total of all the areas together. After getting the full square of the roof, convert it to roofing squares by dividing the number by 100.

You will have the pitch of the roof in mind to get the correct measurements.

How Many Rolls Of Felt Will You Need

Roofing felt is sold by the roll. The average roll of 15-pound roofing felt covers about 400 ft2, or 4 squares, while the average roll of 30-pound roofing felt covers about 200 ft2, or 2 squares.

Rolls of felt are 36 wide x 144 long for 15# and 72 long for 30#. Consider other underlayment options as needed, such as rubber or tar products.

Translating The Cost Of Roofing Squares

Some homeowners find the concept of a roofing square confusing and would prefer to see their roofing cost broken down by square footage. If youre in this boat, all you need to do is divide the cost per roof square by 100 to learn the cost per square foot. For example, if your roofing contractor tells you the cost per square is $500, then that comes down to $5.00 per square foot of your roof. This might help you better understand the approximate cost of your roof replacement project.

When you work with Long Roofing, always feel free to ask questions about your roofing upgrade. If there is any confusion with the terms of your roof estimate, we welcome you to ask us to explain the estimate so you fully understand the value of your investment. We want all of our customers to feel knowledgeable and comfortable with their home improvement projects. If that means explaining the process better, our team is happy to do so.

How Much Material Is Needed

The general rule of thumb is to order 15% extra to ensure you have enough materials to cover your roof entirely and cover any waste. The amount of roofing materials youll need will vary depending on the type of roofing material. For example, three bundles of tiles can cover 1 roofing square, while clay tiles can range from 80-100 per square. But tiles vary in size, so there can be a big difference in how many pieces will fill one square on your roof.

Calculate The Square Footage Of Your Roof

How to measure a roof and calculate square feet. | 01/2020

After considering the slope and complexity of your roof, youre ready to learn how to calculate the square footage of your roof.

To get a rough estimate for your roofs square footage, youll use this equation:

For example, if you have an easy up and over, walkable gable roof and a house that measures 56 feet lengthwise and 28 feet widthwise, your calculation will look like this:

56′ x 28′ = 1,568

1,568 x 1.3 = 2,038

Using this equation wont be 100% accurate, but knowing your roofs square footage is a great jumping-off point to learn how much youll have to invest in your replacement. After getting your roofs rough square footage, put that number in our free Roofing Calculator to get an idea on the cost of your new roof.

What Factors Will Affect The Number Of Squares I Need

When it comes to buying squares for a quilt or other sewing project, several factors can affect the amount you will need. The size of your squares will determine how many fit in a given area, but things like patterns and fabric choice can also play a role. For example, using larger squares with a complicated pattern may require more fabric than smaller squares with a simple design. In addition, if you plan on adding borders or sashing between the squares, this will also increase the amount of material needed. Taking these factors into consideration before starting your project can help ensure you have enough fabric. And remember, its always better to have a bit extra, just in case!

What Type Of Material Should I Use For Roofing Squares

There are many types of roofing materials to choose from when youre renovating your home. If youre looking for durability, go for asphalt shingles. Asphalt is the most common type of roofing material because its affordable and easy to install. Today, asphalt comes in a wide variety of textures and colors, allowing it to give off the appearance of more expensive roofing materials.

Composite roofing is an eco-friendly option if youd like to have the aesthetic appeal of a cedar or slate roof at a fraction of the cost. Its substance is often made from recycled plastics and sustainable materials.

If youre looking to use a long-lasting material for your roof, consider metal roofing. Its estimated to last for up to 50 years and requires limited maintenance. A metal roof also adds additional protection to your home, especially during heavy rain, wind, snow, or hailstorms.

  • What Affects The Cost

Time of year can affect the total cost of your roof installation. For example, if youre getting your roof replaced during the off-season, it may be less expensive. But other factors can also affect the cost per square. These may include:

    • Materials used: Each roofing material has different qualities which affect the cost. For example, shingles are cheaper than tiles.
    • Size of the roof: The larger the roof, the more materials you need and the more labor involved.
    • Roof pitch: A steep roof makes installation more difficult
    • Access to the roof: If your roof is difficult to access it can increase the labor and time involved, raising the installation price.
    • Warranty: If your roof is under warranty, you may have a discounted price. When purchasing a warranty, remember that you get what you pay for a cheap warranty may not cover much or last as long.
    • Removing old material: If youre replacing your roof, the installers will have to remove old roofing material before laying the new tiles or shingles, resulting in additional labor that will increase your roof installation cost.
