How Much Underlayment And Other Materials Will My Roof Need
Roofs not only have shingles, but also felt underneath the shingles and ice and watershield in the valleys. You can get 15 lb felt or 30 lb felt. Both types are generally $20 per roll. 15 lb felt covers 4 squares per roll, and 30 lb felt only covers 2 squares, so youll need double the amount of rolls if you use 30 lb felt.

For this example, well use the same type of roof a simple gabled roof. For our purposes, well say that the roof extends 1.5 around each side.
Well first calculate one face of the roof. The length of the roof is 24+1.5+1.5, which equals 27. The roof pitch is 4:12, which means the width of the roof is about 12.5. Add 1.5 of overhang to this number and you get 14 of roof width on one roof face.
Multiply 27 by 14 and you get 378 square feet for one roof face. The total roof area is 756 square feet. Divide this number by 100 to determine the amount of roof squares youll need, which equals 7.56 roofing squares.
Multiply 7.56 roofing squares by 3 bundles per square. Thus, 23 bundles of shingles are required to cover a 24×24 garage with 1.5 overhangs on all sides.
Importance Of Quality Underlayment
I mention DeckArmor above, because in my opinion it is the best synthetic underlayment available on the market, based on quality and price.
Compared to FELT underlayment, price per square foot of deck armor is $0.202 vs $0.079 for felt or about 4 times more expensive. In reality its even less, because you have 60% more overlaps with felt, thus the actual coverage is much less.
However, since most roofs are about 1600 sq.ft., 2 rolls should be enough for a typical house. In the grand scheme of things, Deck Armor will cost only$249 more. However, it is hands down a much better WATERPROOFING product, so it is very much worth it!

How Do You Calculate The Roof Square Footage Of 1500 Square Feet House
Figure out the area of the house plus overhangs:- determine the squre footage of the shed foot print by measuring the length and width of the shed including the overhangs. Assume the overhangs are 1 feet both sides eves and rake then you have 2 feet extra, so each dimension for 30×50 = 1500 sq ft with overhangs is around 32×52 = 1664 square footage.
Find the roof pitch or slope:- the roof pitch is the amount of slope. The slope is described by the rise in inches or how far up it goes over the run in inches or how far horizontal it goes. We will use a 4 in 12 pitch. For every 4 inches the roof goes up to the peak it goes 12 inches horizontally.
Calculate the square of rise and run and sum it:- square of rise 4×4=16, square of run = 12×12 = 144, add both 16 +144 = 160.
Find the square root of the sum:- square root of 160 = 12.649
Sum divide by 12 to get the product:- square root of 160 = 12.649 is divided by 12 as 12.649 ÷ 12 = 1.054, hence 1.054 equals the product
Multiply the product by the flat roof area and divide by 100:- our house is 1500 square footage which as 1664 sq ft with overhangs, so 1.054 x 1664 = 1754 square feet, 1454 / 100 = 17.54 squares.
Add 10% for wastes and starter:- wastages 10% of 17.54 squares = 1.754, so final squares of shingles do you need = 17.54+ 1.754 = 19.294 squares, it is rounded to 19 squares.

You will need approximately 63 bundles of standard size 3-tab asphalt shingles or 84 bundles of architectural shingles for 2,100 square feet.

How To Account For Shingle Wastage
There will always be a certain amount of wastage when constructing a shingle roof, but this can vary hugely depending on the shape of your roof and any extra features it has.
For a complex roof with lots of corners, you can expect to go through more wastage and offcuts of shingles compared with a simple roof. Roofs with dormer windows or skylights will also have more wastage compared with those that dont, as you will need to make more cuts in the shingles, and the leftover portions will be unusable.
For any roofing project, you should buy between 10 and 15 percent more shingles than you have calculated. So for a roof that measures 20 squares, you should buy an additional 2 or 3 squares to account for wastage. This is because 10 percent of 20 is 2, and 15 percent of 20 is 3. If you are ordering your supplies in bundles, then this will mean you will want between 6 and 9 extra bundles, based on the fact that there are 3 bundles in each square.
Although this might seem like needless extra expenditure, you dont want your project to be delayed if you run out of shingles and cannot get hold of more of the same ones immediately. It is always safer to have more shingles than you need as opposed to less.
If you have shingles left over at the end of your project, you should save them for future repairs or replacements on your roof, so you wont have to have mismatching shingles.
