How Many Bundles Of Roofing Shingles In A Roofing Square?

There are several different methods to calculate the square footage of your roof. If you remember back to grade school, youll recall that youll multiply the length times the width to find the area of a rectangle.

If you are lucky enough to have a simple roof, say a gabled roof with two identical sides or even a single sloping roof, then calculating your roof area will be a breeze. On the other hand, if you have a roof with hips and multiple gables, then youll need to spend a bit more time calculating your roof square footage.

Here are several ways to measure roof area for shingles.

## How Many Bundles Of Shingles Do I Need For 2700 Square Feet

Both types are generally \$20 per roll. 15 lb felt covers 4 squares per roll, and 30 lb felt only covers 2 squares, so youll need double the amount of rolls if you use 30 lb felt.

We have some advice from a professional roofer on selecting the proper underlayment . When it comes to asphalt saturated felt paper, there is only one true 30 lb UL. It is made by Tamko and it is called Tamko Underlayment 30 lb felt. It typically needs to be specially ordered. Regular 30 lb felt is a UL 15 or 16, just as regular 15 lb felt is typically a UL 8. GAF Shingle Mate lays nice and flat and is one more Branded Component needed to meet warranty requirements.

If you have a 30 square roof and go with 15 lb felt, it will cost about \$160. If you use 30 lb felt, it will cost approximately \$320.

Ice and watershield underlayment is installed in the valleys of a roof for extra protection. An average roof needs about 2 rolls of ice and watershield. Each roll costs about \$50, so total cost of ice and watershield is \$100.

Most homeowners are having new ridge vent installed on their home now. The average home needs 60 feet of ridge vent. Ridge vent comes in 4 foot sections for \$10 per section. After doing the math, ridge vent on a home costs \$150.

• ## Figure Out Your Homes Footprint

If you use the square footage of your home, youll only get a vague idea of what the square footage of your roof is. Thats why you have to figure out your homes footprint.

A person of average height will have a stride somewhere between 2 to 2.5 feet. To figure out your homes footprint, you can step off the dimensions of your roof by counting the steps you take to get the length of your home. You will then step off the width of your home.

After stepping off the length and width of your home, youll multiply the two numbers to get your homes footprint.

Length x width = your home’s footprint

Your calculations are going to be off, but measuring this way can give you a basic idea of your homes footprint. Keep in mind, square footage of a house does not equal the square footage of a roof.

## Regional Roofing Cost Differences

When you research shingle prices online and compare them to quotes from your local contractors you may discover a surprising fact: these prices can be VERY DIFFERENT.

This is not because online information is false, or roofers are out of touch with reality. Rather, actual roof installation costs vary widely, depending on where you live.

Different costs of living, from very high to very low, basically set the standard for labor rates in a particular region. If you live in an expensive city, such as New York or San Francisco, you will be paying a premium price for a new install.

This premium can be as high as 18% more than the national average. On the opposite end, if you live in a small town somewhere in the middle of Arkansas, you will be paying less than the national averages sited online. Often, as much as 16% less.

## Cost To Remove Asphalt Shingles

Removing asphalt typically costs between \$3 and \$5 per square foot. One benefit of asphalt shingles is that they can go directly on top of your old shingles provided the roof deck is in good condition.

If the roof deck is in bad shape, you have two or more shingle layers, or if your current roof is shake-shingled, roofers will need to remove all the old materials and roofing. Ask a roofing specialist near you to include this step in the estimate so you arent surprised by the added cost later on.

## How Many Shingles Do I Need For A 2424 Garage

For this example, well use the same type of roof a simple gabled roof. For our purposes, well say that the roof extends 1.5 around each side.

Well first calculate one face of the roof. The length of the roof is 24+1.5+1.5, which equals 27. The roof pitch is 4:12, which means the width of the roof is about 12.5. Add 1.5 of overhang to this number and you get 14 of roof width on one roof face.

Multiply 27 by 14 and you get 378 square feet for one roof face. The total roof area is 756 square feet. Divide this number by 100 to determine the amount of roof squares youll need, which equals 7.56 roofing squares.

Multiply 7.56 roofing squares by 3 bundles per square. Thus, 23 bundles of shingles are required to cover a 24×24 garage with 1.5 overhangs on all sides.

## Importance Of Quality Underlayment

I mention DeckArmor above, because in my opinion it is the best synthetic underlayment available on the market, based on quality and price.

Compared to FELT underlayment, price per square foot of deck armor is \$0.202 vs \$0.079 for felt or about 4 times more expensive. In reality its even less, because you have 60% more overlaps with felt, thus the actual coverage is much less.

However, since most roofs are about 1600 sq.ft., 2 rolls should be enough for a typical house. In the grand scheme of things, Deck Armor will cost only\$249 more. However, it is hands down a much better WATERPROOFING product, so it is very much worth it!

## How Do You Calculate The Roof Square Footage Of 1500 Square Feet House

Figure out the area of the house plus overhangs:- determine the squre footage of the shed foot print by measuring the length and width of the shed including the overhangs. Assume the overhangs are 1 feet both sides eves and rake then you have 2 feet extra, so each dimension for 30×50 = 1500 sq ft with overhangs is around 32×52 = 1664 square footage.

Find the roof pitch or slope:- the roof pitch is the amount of slope. The slope is described by the rise in inches or how far up it goes over the run in inches or how far horizontal it goes. We will use a 4 in 12 pitch. For every 4 inches the roof goes up to the peak it goes 12 inches horizontally.

Calculate the square of rise and run and sum it:- square of rise 4×4=16, square of run = 12×12 = 144, add both 16 +144 = 160.

Find the square root of the sum:- square root of 160 = 12.649

Sum divide by 12 to get the product:- square root of 160 = 12.649 is divided by 12 as 12.649 ÷ 12 = 1.054, hence 1.054 equals the product

Multiply the product by the flat roof area and divide by 100:- our house is 1500 square footage which as 1664 sq ft with overhangs, so 1.054 x 1664 = 1754 square feet, 1454 / 100 = 17.54 squares.

Add 10% for wastes and starter:- wastages 10% of 17.54 squares = 1.754, so final squares of shingles do you need = 17.54+ 1.754 = 19.294 squares, it is rounded to 19 squares.

## How Many Bundles Of Shingles Do I Need For 2100 Square Feet

You will need approximately 63 bundles of standard size 3-tab asphalt shingles or 84 bundles of architectural shingles for 2,100 square feet.

Thus, for a 2100 square foot gable roof, you would need 63 bundles of shingles plus 10% of ridge, starter and wastages. Thus, it will take 63 bundles of 3-tab standard size shingles to cover 2100 square feet roof. Thus, there are 63 bundles of standard size 3-tab shingles you will need to cover 2100 square feet roof.

## How To Account For Shingle Wastage

There will always be a certain amount of wastage when constructing a shingle roof, but this can vary hugely depending on the shape of your roof and any extra features it has.

For a complex roof with lots of corners, you can expect to go through more wastage and offcuts of shingles compared with a simple roof. Roofs with dormer windows or skylights will also have more wastage compared with those that dont, as you will need to make more cuts in the shingles, and the leftover portions will be unusable.

For any roofing project, you should buy between 10 and 15 percent more shingles than you have calculated. So for a roof that measures 20 squares, you should buy an additional 2 or 3 squares to account for wastage. This is because 10 percent of 20 is 2, and 15 percent of 20 is 3. If you are ordering your supplies in bundles, then this will mean you will want between 6 and 9 extra bundles, based on the fact that there are 3 bundles in each square.

Although this might seem like needless extra expenditure, you dont want your project to be delayed if you run out of shingles and cannot get hold of more of the same ones immediately. It is always safer to have more shingles than you need as opposed to less.

If you have shingles left over at the end of your project, you should save them for future repairs or replacements on your roof, so you wont have to have mismatching shingles.

## Why Is It Important

A roofing square is an important measurement for roofers. It is the most common way to measure a roofs size. Roofers use this measurement to calculate the amount of material they will need to cover a roof. This measurement is also used to price a new roof. A roofing square is equal to 100 square feet.

Roofers will measure the length and width of a roof and divide it by 100. This will give them the roofs square footage. Most roofs are not perfect squares, therefore this measurement may be difficult to calculate without a roofing square ruler or tool such as a credit card that is 100-square inches long.
