Weeks 3 Through : Framing And Exteriors
Over the next few weeks, youll see your house take shape! Builders will frame a skeleton of your house with lumber. Youll see the rough openings for windows and doors, as well as interior walls. If your new home has more than one story, all levels will be framed at once.
Builders will add exterior sheathing to the outside of your house, which isnt the final exterior. Its job is to keep the house dry while construction is finished.
Your roof will also be completed during this time. The builders will apply sheathing and nail it in place. Then your roof shingles or tiles will be applied. By the end of this period, your roof will look like a finished houses roof.
As part of the framing, your windows and doors will be installed. However, theyll still look rough. Thats because the casings that surround them wont be installed for another month.
Expect at least one more inspection during this timeframe. A building inspector will check the framing and verify its safe. Theyll make sure the frame is bolted securely to the foundation. Theyll also check that the lumber is good quality and that the house will support the weight it was designed to.
Once a building inspector approves the framing, the final exterior finishes will be applied.
Safety Considerations When Roofing A House
It needs to be pointed out that any time you are working up on a roof, you need to take extensive safety precautions both for yourself and for anyone on the ground below.
Dangerous roof falls are more common than you think, especially if you are hauling heavy materials up and down a ladder. Thats why many people advise using a full fall protection kit.
Moreover, since you are working outdoors, there is always the risk of a slip-and-fall caused by unexpectedly slick surface areas on your roof. The type of shoes you wear matters very much: they must be able to give you plenty of traction on the roof surface.
With that in mind, here are a few basic safety guidelines to keep in mind:
- Use a fall protection kit comprised of a safety harness, rope and hook
- Wear shoes with rubber soles capable of gripping the roofs surface
- Wear hard hats in the vicinity of your roof

- Extend the ladder to more than 3 feet beyond the edge of the roof to make it easier to get up and down
Additionally, the types of tools and materials that you use also matter. The higher quality the tools you use, the less waste you will have, the less energy you will exert on the job, and the less chance you will have of making a mistake.
Fold Flashing Over The Peak
Cut the flashing back to the peak along each crease. Then fold the flashing over the peak and cover the cut ends with self-stick underlayment. Roof valleys channel a lot of water, so they need extra protection. Start by installing self-stick underlayment on the decking. This process is much easier with two people. Cut the underlayment to size , and peel off the entire plastic backer. With a person on each end, fold the underlayment in on itself, sticky side out. Then lay it into the valley and unfold it. Try to push it down into the crease of the valley as tightly as possible. If this self-stick ice-and- water underlayment bridges both sides of the decking, leaving a gap underneath, it could tear once you install the metal valley flashing. Run the underlayment past the drip edge at the eaves, and trim off the extra with a utility knife. Once it’s smooth, nail it down on the outside edges.
Finish installing felt paper on the rest of the roof, overlapping the self-stick underlayment. Be careful when you trim back the felt paper so you don’t slice into the underlayment. Photo 7 shows the underlayment covering the felt on one edge a couple of inches. This will keep water farther away from the inside corner of the fascia. You can extend the center out even more but not so far that water overshoots your gutters if you have them.

Week : Painting And Landscaping
Week 10 is another exciting week! The inside of your house will be painted, so youll be able to see what rooms will really look like. Drywall will get its final coats of paint, and trim will also be painted.
If youve chosen to landscape as part of the building process, this will happen outside the house during this point in the home construction timeline. The lot will be leveled one more time, and trees and shrubs will be planted. Lawn, mulch and gravel will be put down.
Sometime this week, you and your builder will do a walk-through of your new home. This is a chance to make sure your home has the correct paints and finishes. If you have concerns about something that looks unfinished or just not what you imagined, this is the time to mention it. The builder will correct any issues over the next few weeks.
Frames And Trusses How Long Should They Take To Put Up
Ive got a two storey 35sq house Im planning on building. Roughly same size on each level. Ive noticed that frames for two storey homes often go up in 3-5 days, and then the trusses generally only seem to a take a day after that. What I dont see is how many men are working to get the frame and trusses up in that timeframe?Whats a reasonable timeframe I should allow just myself and an offsider to get a prefab ground floor frame up? My guess two days?Subfloor joists? 1 dayYellow tongue floor? ï¿½ dayTop floor frame? 2 daysTrusses ? 2 days?7 -8 days for two men? Sound reasonable?Another question? Is is possible to do it yourself without an offsider? I highly doubt it, but I would imagine it possible to stand up prefrab frames? Dodgy work happens everywhere in every trade and the frame inspection is only as good as the guy doing the inspection. Say no more.
if you have no experience in timber framing, especially 2 storey then I suggest you get someone with the relevant experience to at least oversee the project to get a decent level of quality & safety.
