Let’s Look At Cold Roofs To Start With
Cold roofs are termed ‘cold’ as the roof joists and deck are above the insulation and so cooler than the internal room temperature.The picture below demonstrates a typical cold roof detail.

As you can see the shed roof insulation is fitted between the roof rafters, there is a minimum of 50mm air gap required above the top ofthe insulation and the underside of the roof deck. The purpose of this air gap is to allow any moisture that gets into this void toescape. Vents are required in the eaves at each end of the roof to allow this.
Below the joists there is a Vapour Control Layer which is designed to stop any of the warm moisture laden air at ceiling levelgetting through and into the roof void. The plasterboard roof finish is applied beneath the VCL.
The problems with cold roofs occur when insufficient cross ventilation is achieved. And also, when holes in the VCL fordownlighters or other reasons allow moist air into the ventilation void and it condenses.
The cold roof is a useful solution but a better way exists.
How Much Does It Cost To Diy Your Shed Insulation
If you are going to do it yourself, using 50mm insulation, here are some approximations based on £35 including VAT per sheet of foil-backed insulation.

To insulate the walls, floor and roof you will need approximately 10 sheets of 50mm foil backed insulation. Based on the prices above, this will cost approx. £350 including VAT.

Medium shed/summerhouse 10 x 10
To insulate the walls, floor and roof you will need approximately 15 sheets of 50mm foil backed insulation. Based on the prices above, this will cost approx. £525 including VAT.
Add 12 sheets of lining at approximately £40 = £480
Total price for 10 x 10 = £1005
Large shed/summerhouse 16 x 12
To insulate the walls, floor and roof you will need approximately 24 sheets of 50mm foil backed insulation. Based on the prices above, this will cost approx. £840 including VAT.

Tip : Working Around Outlets
You cant insulate over an outlet or window, for obvious reasons, so youll need to cut out the insulation around those areas. Try to leave NO empty space. The batts should be pulled apart from the outlet up to where the wiring comes down so the wiring is sandwiched in between the middle of the batt.
If youre wondering if the outlets might let in cold or hot air, the answer is that they do. I buy foam insulators for any outlets on the exterior of my home to prevent this. Theyre VERY easy to install.
Are The Windows And Doors Of The Shed Intact
After years of use or a particularly stormy winter, sheds can be left in a state of disarray. Its important to check, before planning a shed insulation project, that the windows and doors of the structure are intact. Theres no point in insulating the structure if the windows are compromised as the effect of the insulation will be automatically lost.

How To Insulate Shed Walls
Theres a lot to consider when insulating shed walls. How to make them airtight, moisture control, vapor barrier, wiring and plumbing, and whether to insulate inside or outside or both? Much of the process is similar whether a retrofit or new construction.
Cracks and crevices in the walls should be eliminated as much as possible using caulking or another barrier material. A layer of spray foam on the inside of the 2×4 or 2×6 walls and gable ends will make them air tight and, once cured, creates a vapor barrier.
An inch of spray foam at R6 would provide R18 at 3 inches thick. The spray foam also seals and insulates around wires, electrical boxes, ducts and pipes.
Using mineral wool or fiberglass batts between studs is less expensive than spray foam, but needs to be cut around wires, electrical boxes, pipes and ducts. Slit the batt to go over wires and pipes, and stuff behind and around electrical boxes.
Batts also require a 6 mil poly vapor barrier to be stapled or tacked to the studs over the insulation. If the walls arent air tight, moisture damage can occur inside the walls.
The main difference between retrofit and new construction is the moisture barrier. The moisture barrier protects the whole structure, not just the inside living space.
A new construction moisture barrier would be an ISO board or a polystyrene board applied with or on a reflective barrier, and then a weatherproof siding applied over it. Many shed conversions skip this step.
Installing Baffles For Ventilation
Hilarious, but for some time, I was calling these things waffles. HA! Nope, completely different.
Baffles are attached to the underside of a roof with staples to protect the fresh airflow coming in from the outside of the shed via the soffit vents. You dont want your roof insulation blocking that air flow.
This is where the Arrow Fastener T50 heavy duty stapler comes in handy!
But first, I created some additional holes in the bays above the double top plate to allow for additional airflow. My shed isnt built like a traditional construction on a new home, where there is an air gap between the overhang of the rafters or trusses.
My trusses stop at the edge of the double top plate, and the engineered wood wall meets the roof. Therefore, there really wasnt a sufficient pathway of airflow. With these holes drilled at the same angle as the roof, the draft from the soffit vents should provide a good airflow!
To keep the baffles in place, I used my Arrow Fastener T50 stapler with Arrow Fastener staples to attach it to the roof.

How Does Shed Insulation Work
Foilboard® Shed insulation works by reducing heat transfer through the existing structure. Steel is well known to be an excellent conductor of heat and will transfer that heat in or out of the shed by thermal bridging if not insulated. Foilboard® insulation panels insulate the steel by creating a thermal break, a disruption of the thermal bridge. Foilboard® also provides a radiant barrier that will reflect the radiant heat absorbed by the metal cladding and radiated inside. Conversely, if the shed is heated the insulation will reduce the heat transfer from inside to outside. Heat always travels to cold, so by creating a seal the insulation can reduce the amount of air transfer making the shed more comfortable for longer.

Yes. Insulating your shed is almost always worth it. The costs associated with not insulting can become astronomical even ongoing if youre finding youre replacing equipment year after year due to heat damage.

Step : Cover All The Staples And Openings With Tuck Tape
As mentioned above, you dont want to mix any of your conditioned space that will be heated and cooled with any air behind the vapor barrier in your walls or ceiling.
To prevent this, tape around the electrical boxes, recessed lights, and any staples, including any holes or tears in the plastic, around electrical boxes, recessed lights, etc.
Ill admit that I likely over taped, but I would rather have over-taped than to not tape enough. By the time I was done, it looked like I walked onto the set of Showtimes Dexter New Blood. HA!
Around my workbench, that was the hardest because of the 2x4s. In fact, I did over-tape in this area because later, when the drywallers came to install the drywall, I ended up having to remove some of the tape that extended past where the 1/2 drywall would be so that the tape wasnt exposed. Not a biggie, but just be mindful of not using too many staples in places where staples may not be needed, especially if youre using large sheets of plastic that can stretch across the width without needing to overlap another piece.

Spray Foam Insulation: Our Ceiling Solution
While I had originally planned to insulate the ceiling myself, it was VERY high and I wasnt sure how to manage it because the studs on the ceiling or on the short side above the 9 walls werent similar to my wall studs- there was no neat spot to pop the insulating bats into.
I decided to splurge on this and hired a company to do spray foam insulation on the roof. This ran $1500 for the roof + an additional $400 to put a special coat of paint on it to seal it so I could use the ceiling as is without adding sheetrock or paneling.
The spray foam was closed cell foam R-21. Spray foam companies come in with special equipment because the foam is pretty toxic. Youll want to plan to be out of the space for a few days after they spray it until the smell dissipates.
I wish theyd been able to do the floor as well. The main issue that the spray foam company mentioned is that the lack of insulation in the floor meant that moisture could come into the shed through the floor and get trapped inside the shed. This could cause issues with mold. My minisplit has a dehumidifier, however, and I havent had any moisture issues in the shed.
Insulating Around Recessed Lights
If your shed will have recessed lights such as mine, make sure theyre IC rated, which means Insulation Contact is allowed. Recessed lights can get hot with traditional bulbs and you dont want to start a fire .
Many people are switching to LED lights, including the kind of lights that can simply be cut into the drywall after its been hung, and plopping them in that way.
Regardless, make sure the cans are rated IC.

Like shed ceilings the wall is a large area that is capable of raising temperatures in your shed work space. Using Foilboard® as shed wall insulation will improve the comfort by reducing the transfer of heat by radiation, conduction and convection. Foilboard® Rigid panel insulation will not sag so can be placed between the wall girts allowing for the wall to be internally cladded.

Unvented Roofs Are Easier
In many ways, its easier to build an unvented low-slope roof, and there are several ways to do it.
If you install a combination of closed-cell foam and vapor-permeable insulation, you also need to be sure that the foam is thick enough to keep the roof sheathing above the dew point during the winter. The International Residential Code specifies the following minimum R-values for the foam layer of these hybrid insulation sandwiches: R-5 in zones 1-3, R-10 in zone 4C, R-15 in zones 4A and 4B, R-20 in zone 5, R-25 in zone 6, R-30 in zone 7, and R-35 in zone 8.
While vented roof assemblies are designed to dry to the exterior, unvented roof assemblies are designed to dry to the interior. Thats why an unvented roof assembly should never include interior polyethylene. If a building inspector insists that you install some type of interior vapor retarder, you can always install a smart vapor retarder such as CertainTeeds MemBrain to satisfy your inspector.

A vented roof needs intake vents at the attic perimeter and cupolas at the center of the roof to maintain airflow between the sheathing and the top of the insulation. The ceiling must be airtight to prevent condensation on the underside of the sheathing.
