Install The Roof Rake Drip Edge

The third step is to install the drip edge along the rakes of the roof.

The rake drip edge is installed on top of the building paper so that any moisture will be diverted above the paper.

Cut the building paper off flush with the fascia board before installing the drip edge.

Start at the lower end of the rake and overlap the 2 inch return from the eve drip edge that was installed earlier.

At the ridge you can either cut the drip edge to terminate at the ridge or on smaller sheds you can use one piece of drip edge to cover both sides of the roof rakes.

Install The Asphalt Shingle Starter Course

The starter course is the first course of shingles at the eve. It is a course of shingles that have the tabs cut off. You can either buy a starter course shingle that has the tabs cut off or you can cut the tabs off the shingle with a utility knife. The first Starter shingle needs to have 6 inches cut off its end it to create a staggered pattern that does not line up with the full size shingle that will be placed on top of it. Turn the starter shingle upside down so that the sticky asphalt strip can stick to the underlayment just above the drip edge. Install the edge of the starter strip 3/8 over the edge of the drip edge. Install five fasteners in each shingle up 3 to 4 inches from the eve.

Cut The Overhanging Shingle Ends

The seventh step is to cut the shingle ends off after the first 6 rows are installed.

On this project we got ahead of ourselves and forgot to cut the shingles after the first six rows.. But the process is the same.

You will use the straight edge of a spare shingle to line up your cut. Flip a shingle over and line the straight edge up with the 3/8″ overhang of the lower shingle. On the top end you will hold the straight edge 3/8″ off the drip edge.

Use your utility knife to cut along the straight edge of the shingle. It sometimes takes several passes with the knife to cut all the way through.

Now, clean the cut edges of the shingles by using a scrap piece of asphalt roofing to burnish the cut edge of the shingles that are installed on the roof.

Step 1

Position and unroll the detail strip so its square to the line of the eaves. Fix it by nailing the top edge using 10mm galvanised clout nails. Form the drip edge towards any guttering, or nail to the fascia at 5cm intervals.

Step 2

When laying down your first strip, ensure the shingles are positioned square to the line of the eaves.

  • Align the tiles horizontally by interlocking side slots to the edges of the shingles

Step : Start Putting The Metal Panels Into Place

You want to make sure to start straight and keep the edges straight. Keep everything as square and symmetrical as possible.

This also applies to running the screws in a straight line. You can place the screws on either the flat surface or the raised ridges on the roof.

These screws are used for fastening the metal. Thus, the straighter they are, the easier it will be to fasten the metal.

When you install the panels, you will have to cut the valleys by hand. You can pre-measure closely and install them as you go along, or you can cut the panels close, leaving out some of the screws, and then come back later.

Also, be careful not to scratch the colored surfaces of the metal. If you scratch the metal now, it might lead to rust or other problems later. You want to keep any gritty substances from coming into contact with the metal.

Staple Roofing Felt To The Sheathing

The size of your shed influences the roof membrane selection. 30-pound roofing felt is less expensive than self-adhering water and ice shield. Its a shed, so I use roofing felt.

The roof deck is small, so I roll the felt out on the ground to the length of the roof, plus 1-foot. The extra foot allows for a 6-inch overhang at each end.

Roll the first piece out, so it overhangs at both ends and the front edge. Use stainless steel staples to hold it in place. Roll out the next piece, so it overlaps the first this will help to shed moisture better.

Repeat until the roof is covered. Use the lines on the felt to keep the rolls straight and aligned.

Make Sure The Roof Structure Is Sound Before You Start

But first things first, if you are building a shed from scratch make sure the shed frame is square and level before you begin your roof construction. Once all beams are in place, cover with 12 mm exterior-grade plywood sheathing. Make sure you buy exterior-grade plywood because it is moisture resistant and less likely to warp when exposed to outdoor conditions.

The plywood sheathing should be laid with the grain of the plywood perpendicular to the roof rafters. Laying the sheathing this way ensures that you create a sound structure.

Use a chalk-line to mark each plywood sheet, snapping the line to clearly mark where the rafter beam is located. Then, in accordance with local guidelines, nail the sheathing to the rafter beam using 2″ galvanized nails. Some local guidelines may suggest nailing the sheathing to the rafter beams every 4″ or 6″, the requirements vary based on local weather conditions such as hurricanes, tornados, and snow loads.

How to Measure Your Roof:

  • Use a tape measurer to find the length and width of each section of your roof.
  • Multiply each section of your Roofs Length x Roofs Width = Roofs Surface Area
  • Repeat for each section of your roof.
  • Add all of the Roof Surface Area sections together = Roofs Surface Space
  • Divide Roofs Surface Space/100 = Square feet also known as Squares
  • For example: a 10 Square Roof is actually 1000 sq. ft overall.
  • Use this number to buy the correct amount of asphalt roofing shingles and underlayment to cover your total roof area + 10%.

* Full Description below:

The simplest way to get the area of your roof will likely require you climbing up with your tape measure and getting help from a friend or family member. This may be a job best left to the pros if you have any safety concerns about being on a roof. Measure the length and the width of each section of your roof and multiply the two dimensions together. This gives you the roofs surface area of that individual section of roofing. Add all the roofs areas together to find out exactly how much roof surface space there is overall. Do this in feet and then divide the total that you come up with by 100 to get your figure from square feet to what is known as squares. A 10 square roof is actually 1,000 square feet overall.

Build The Open Metal Valleys

  • 4.1 – Install metal valley trim on the membrane, starting at the bottom of the roof.
  • 4.2 – Center the trim on the valley and secure the edge with roofing nails. The nail head must maintain the flashing in place. Do not perforate the metal.
  • 4.3 – Continue along the valley and lap sections of trim by at least 6″. Coat each overlay with plastic cement.
  • 4.4 – Establish two lines on either side of the valley where the shingles will end.
  • 4.5 – Place a line at the top, 3″ from the centre on both sides of the valley.
  • 4.6 – Deviate 1/8″ per foot as you bring the line down to the drip edge, where the maximum deviation should be 8″.
  • 4.7 – Snap the chalk line on both sides of the valley

Take Down Existing Shingles

  • Remove the existing shingles, felt and nails from the roof with a pry bar. Start at the top of the roof, inserting the pry bar under the shingles and pushing downward. The downward motion forces the opposite end of the pry bar upward, easily removing the shingles and nails in one fell swoop. Start at one side and work your way across the roof, one row at a time until you reach the eaves. Pry out any remaining nails that are left in the sheathing after the shingles are removed. Leave the metal drip edge in place if one already exists.

How To Finish The Lean To Roof Leading Edge

A lean-to shed leans up against another structure. Waterproofing on type of shed is important, but it is doubly important with a lean-to style shed.

Water that infiltrates a lean-to style shed not only risks the integrity of the lean-to but also the structure it leans against. Thus, ensuring a watertight connection between the lean-to roof and the other structure is critical.

Unlike a stand-alone shed, finishing the top row of shingles on a lean-to does not involve cutting strips. However, you will need a couple of different types of sealers to ensure screws and gaps are not exposed.

Heres how to shingle the last row of a lean-to roof:

Install your shingles to the top edge of your lean-to roof. Ideally, the top edge of the last shingle row is flush with the top edge. If there is only a little space left, then youre fine and dont have to lay another row yet.

If the gap allows you to put another course of shingles, then do it. You may have to trim some off the back to allow it to fit flush against the top edge, which is fine as long as the adhesive strip is still there.

You now have a final row of shingles with lots of exposed nails. These must be covered. Instead of using roofing cement, you will run a final course of shingles.

Overlap the final course of shingles, being sure to stagger them just as you would your other shingle rows. Make sure the last course completely covers the nails of the previous row.

Cover the nail heads with roofing cement.

Install Waterproofing Membrane At Eves Valleys And Where Damming Occurs

How To Build A Shed: Install Roof Shingles

Waterproofing membrane is a very thick material that forms a waterproof barrier in areas that are prone to leak. It is typically required along the eves of sheds that are heated to better protect the edges from ice damming. It comes in several forms and is either sticky back or non sticky back. I prefer the bituminous sticky back membrane because it stays where it is put and sticks to itself when it is layered for larger areas, it also does not need fasteners to install it which is good because you are not putting holes in the membrane that is protecting the most leak prone areas of the roof. Install the membrane in valleys by running the 36 wide material straight up the valley. Install it in damming areas like where a wall and valleys that are close to each other or in roof pitch transitions.

If you use a non sticky back membrane and have valleys on your shed, make sure to step on the center line of the valley to get it fully in contact with the wood valley and then attach the outer edges with fasteners about an inch from the edges.
