First you have to make sure that your local building codes allow you to add a roof to an existing deck. You might wonder why, I know that I wondered about that myself. The reason is that decks that aren’t originally built to have a roof may not be able to handle the weight of the roof . That means that it could come crashing down so it’s a safety code, among other things. Here’s an article that explains that issue and what might be done to fix it, but it doesn’t sound like it will be inexpensive. 🙁 Wishing you the best.

Can Your Deck Support A Roof
A deck alone can never support a roof. For instance, you cannot rely on your deck joists or beams to support your roof as well as your deck. Load tables for joists and beams consider 10 psf dead loads, which is the amount of lumber used on the deck alone not a deck and a roof. Therefore, adding a roofs weight onto a deck negates the structural integrity of the deck.
A deck roof will need to be supported by posts and a beam. The posts will need to be on concrete footings, deep enough to go beyond the frost line in your area. A beam will connect the posts and will be sized according to the local building code. The rafters will support the roof itself and connect the beam to the house.
If you already have appropriately sized posts supporting your deck, there is the possibility of integrating existing deck posts with the roof posts however, in most cases, the deck roof will require new footings.
What Is The Roof Over A Deck Called

How To Put A Roof Over An Existing Deck
Hopefully, you now have a clear idea of what the finished deck cover should look like. But now comes the hard part. Taking it from your imagination into the real world.
The way that the deck cover is built will often depend on the type that you selected. It will also depend on the type of building codes that are in place. For example, in some cases, you will be able to bolt the cover onto the existing deck structure with heavy-duty screws. This can be a great way of saving time. However, in other cases, you will need to put in new structural support posts and caissons.
Once youve got the support posts and beams in place, youll be able to start installing the rafters. This is what will hold the roofing in place. They will be cut at an angle. This will create the pitch of the roof, stopping the rain from accumulating on it.
Finally, the roofing will need to be attached. There are a few types of materials that youll be able to use. Some people might prefer to use wood or aluminum while others will want to use corrugated polyvinyl. When youre putting in the roof, be sure to use all the correct fasteners that will get you signed off on an inspection. This will secure the roofing for years to come. Overlap the roofing materials slightly. This ensures that the roof wont start to leak.
Restoring A Roof Deck
Although Karmins condo is also in a historic district, and her deck also needed to be invisible from the street, a roof deck of sorts was already in place when she and her husband bought the condo.
We bought the top-floor unit in our building because we wanted a private roof deck, Karmin said. The previous owner had placed pavers on the roof and used some heavy planters around the edge to function as a makeshift railing. When the condo building replaced the entire roof, they removed the planters but put back the pavers, so there was no railing at all.
The lack of a railing is a safety code violation, as well as scary, so Karmin consulted the contractor handling the interior renovations on their condo about the roof.
The roof deck includes a stainless-steel railing welded together to make a structurally strong frame for the deck, Landis said. Because a roof deck existed before Karmin and Strauss moved in, a staircase and door to the deck were already in place.
The real challenge was that this building is eight stories high, and we needed a crane to lift up the materials, Landis said. We had to close the street for safety during the project. We also hired a metal specialist who designed the handrail system.
The resulting deck has space for more than 60 people to enjoy fireworks and cool breezes. A wet bar just inside the door to the deck makes entertaining easier.

What Types Of Covers Are Available
For most of us, the most exciting part of the project is planning it out. There are so many possibilities that youll be able to explore. This will give you confidence that youll be able to find the perfect cover to suit your style. Lets take a quick look at some of the most popular deck covers.
First, you might want to have a retractable awning. Youll be able to put these out whenever you are using the deck. When youre not using it, youll be able to put the awning away. Most modern awnings will extend and fold back with just the push of a button. These tend to be the cheapest option and will be the easiest for you to install.
Another option is a pergola cover. This is the most traditional look and tends to have the most stylistic approach. It has joists and beams going one way, and then smaller 2×2 slats going the opposite direction letting a set amount of light through.
With this design, youll be able to use wood like cedar, giving your roof a more natural appearance. Suppose low maintenance is high on your list. In that case, an alumawood all-aluminum material has the look of wood without the yearly upkeep.
Though these are some of the most popular types of covers, there are still plenty more for you to choose from. Often, your builders will be able to present a portfolio of work that they have done before. These might spark some design ideas. Check out our project gallery by clicking here .

Installation Of A Roof Deck
Since most roof decks are floating structures that sit on top of flat roofs, its crucial to weatherproof the roof below the deck to prevent water from leaking into the building below. Flat roofs are prone to leaking even without decks because of design errors, improper materials, and improper installation. Many times when roof decks are installed, they further damage roofs causing more severe leaking and drainage problems. A rubber watertight membrane adds extra protection. The membrane will act as an extra barrier between the floating deck materials and the roof materials below.
After the waterproof membrane is secure, 2 x 6 sections of wood called sleepers are added for support. They are placed every 16 and provide a structure for the deck materials to lay on. This also allows the deck to be removed easily, in case the waterproof membrane is damaged and needs to be accessed for maintenance and repairs.
You will have many options for materials and design when building your roof deck. Choosing sustainably sourced wood and decking is a great option for the environment, and most eco-friendly building materials hold up incredibly well against wear and moisture. Youll want to ensure the materials and design you select are a good fit for the climate in your area. For example, some materials are more susceptible to water damage and warping, so youll want to steer clear of those if you live in a rainy state like Florida.
