As we mentioned previously, the best thing to do is to prevent your rooftop dryer vent from clogging in the first place.
Not using a screen will help airflow go through the vent easier and reduce clogging risks. The cap of the dryer should be enough to keep birds out and still allow the lint to escape your system.
Long drying cycles also facilitate clogging. It is a lot more efficient to run your dryer in cycles of 30 to 40 minutes and give it a break before you restart it. Long drying cycles increase moisture levels and attract more debris as well as more lint, creating the perfect conditions for clogging.
Dont Vent Your Clothes Dryer Through The Roof
As soon as Im in charge, there will be no more venting of clothes dryers through the roof. I think the roof is a stupid spot to terminate clothes dryer vents because its difficult to clean and its a major contributor to ice dams. Clothes dryers should be vented through the side of the house, preferably within reach from the ground.
How Tall Of A Roof Do You Need For A Dryer
Less than 5 1/2 above ceiling level, it is also invisible for minimal visibility. For areas with moderate snowfall and/or higher profile tiles, choose the larger 486, which is just as effective but larger. Neighbors Are Close By
If your property is in close proximity to others, then roof ventilation will in all likelihood be better than venting through the wall. This is because wall ventilation, in this instance, could cause your dryer to vent directly into your neighbors property, to the point where they may even smell the fumes inside there home.
If youre living in a townhome, where the buildings are often adjoined, then its quite likely wall ventilation will not even be possible. Therefore, venting the dryer through the roof will be the only feasible option in this instance.
No Other Access To The Exterior
If theres no other way to reach the homes exterior, then venting through the roof will be necessary. Say, for example, you have a laundry room thats in the interior part of your home. If its more than 35 feet away from all exterior walls, then venting through the roof will be best. This is because most homes have the space for vertical ductwork construction, and in a lot of cases the ductwork will be out of sight and out of mind.

Ensuring Roof Venting Is Up To Code
As was mentioned earlier, the International Residential Code endorses roof venting, which isnt that much of a surprise considering its been found to be an effective way of eliminating moisture thats the result of clothes-drying. But just because roof dryer venting is endorsed doesnt mean you can set up any kind of dryer vent installation and call it adequate.
Your system will need to be in line with local building codes, and youll also want to have certified dryer exhaust technicians oversee the installation. These experts will also make sure your system is maintainable, and this is important as a dryer vent system can last a couple decades if its taken care of well.
Difficulty Cleaning Dryer Vent
Dryer vents should always be vented through the side of the house and not vented through the roof, and ideally, the exit should be fairly close to the ground. Keeping a clean dryer vent is much easier when you can safely reach the exit. These terminals need to be cleaned on a regular basis to prevent lint buildup.
A buildup of lint can cause reduced airflow and limit the efficiency of your dryer. If this goes unchecked for too long it becomes a fire hazard. Cleaning a dryer vent isnt normally too complicated. You simply need to pull the lint out. This can become difficult if the system is especially complicated, or if the vent is vertical and requires roof access. Clothes Dryers That Vent Into The Crawl Space
Our second clothes dryer vent exhaust mistake is shown above: the installer hung the vent opening at the crawl space vent screen.
Not only did lint clog the crawl space vent, but most of the damp dryer exhaust air soon was being spilled into the crawl space ceiling.
Special provisions for dryer venting in mobile homes
Above: a clothes dryer exhaust vent installed in a mobile home can be vented down through the crawl space and outside through the skirting wall, but must never be vented to terminate right in the crawl space.

Dryer Vents Through The Roof
I have noticed a trend in new construction which is gaining in popularity. That is to install dryer vents through the roof. This is a practice that really rubs me the wrong way.
Why am I so disapproving? Many reasons!
To me this is all a big duh! But apparently not to architects and builders. I don’t understand the trend. I consider this to be a safety issue!
This is the most common design of what I am seeing lately.
There are many variations of this, to be sure.
So, when I see one venting through the roof, I go through my little spiel of the downsides of such installations.

Five: Putting A Hole In The Attic Floor
Once the exterior components have been secured, the next step is drilling a hole in the attic floor, as through this hole the pipe passes on its way to the dryer below. You may need to cut a hole through multiple floors to accommodate the pipe, or it may be in a location that requires only one cut before the dryers location is reached.
The tracing procedure addressed above should be followed every time a hole needs to be cut in the floor/ceiling. Taking precise measurements here is essential, as all the holes must line up perfectly to ensure the pipes path to the dryer is not obstructed.

Through the roof, of course. Most of the time. This arrangement will work fine at first, but just like dryer vents that go through the side of the house, the terminal will eventually get clogged with lint.
Beside above, how long can dryer vents be? The maximum developed length of a clothes dryer exhaust duct shall not exceed 35 feet from the dryer location to the wall or roof termination. The maximum length of the duct shall be reduced 2.5 feet for each 45-degree bend, and 5 feet for each 90-degree bend.
Keeping this in consideration, can you run a dryer vent through the attic?
The International Residential Code allows you to run a dryer vent through the attic, but you can‘t terminate it there. Doing so would fill your attic with warm, moist air that could rot the framing and ruin the attic insulation, and lint from the dryer could create other problems.
What is the code for dryer vents?
It is better to join the pipes with foil-backed duct tape. The vent should be as straight as possible, and the code sets a limit of 25 feet on its length. If you have to install bends, you should reduce this limit by 5 feet for every 90-degree bend and 2 1/2 feet for every 45-degree one.

Is My Exterior Wall Large Enough To Vent Directly To The Outdoors
If you answered no to option 1 or 2, or if your area doesnt have an enclosed outdoor area, venting may need to be installed indoors through an open window and vent all the way up out of a vent hood on your roof. This is fine as long as theres adequate ventilation in that room already . Some homeowners choose not to vent inside at all but install an exterior vent hood with a vent cap instead. This will keep out bugs and still vent moist air.
Maintenance Of The Dryer Vent
There has always been a recommended step by step process for maintaining your dryer vent. As with anything in your home, it is important to be proactive in your maintenance on a daily basis. This will reduce any future issues that might arise.
The most important thing that you can do is to check the lint grate on your dryer. Do this before you run any laundry to dry. You can clear this lint trap very easily and it will save you a huge headache moving forward.
Its also important to vacuum around the dryer to make sure no extra particles can get into the vent or potentially start a fire. If you notice a fire starts, shut off the electricity immediately.
Use one dryer sheet at a time, as they release chemicals into the dryer vent. Lastly, it is recommended that you air dry sheets and pillows so that they dont produce more lint that can attach to the dryer vents.

It is close to impossible for one to own a clothes dryer minus a laundry machine. Yet, thats how much our lives are dependent on technology.
The amount of laundry you do depends mainly on the number of people in your household and childrens presence. Children need a change of wardrobe more frequently than adults do.
The more the laundry, the more the lint, and this will determine how often you do maintenance around your home.
Why Is This Dangerous
First of all, that could be a fire hazard. Your dyer is pushing heat through the lint. Plus, its going to cause your dryer to work harder, making it less effective and shortening its service life.
If its possible to get the vent off of the roof and out a sidewall, lets get that done. Have a plumber, an HVAC company, or a duct guy get that off of there and then we can change the roof line and close off the top.
If the vent cant be changed, then maintenance needs to be a priority. The roof should be looked at once every two to three years to make sure that its not plugged at the top. And have a duct-cleaning company, or an HVAC company, clean that thing out on a regular basis.

The dryer exhaust guidelines in International Housing Code section M1502 specify that the dryer’s exhaust duct from the dryer to an exhaust vent in a room, wall, or ceiling must not exceed 25 feet. However, only 25 feet is indicated if it is a straight line from the dryer to the outlet, which is rare.
