How To Choose Between Tpo And Pvc

How to Install Corolux PVC Roof Sheets

Both TPO and PVC roofing will serve most commercial buildings well. However, youll want to keep in mind a few factors when choosing between the two:

  • The climate. TPO roofing works well in most climates PVC doesnt hold up as well in colder temperatures. Conversely, PVC tends to hold up better than TPO in hurricane-prone areas.
  • The buildings purpose. TPO is fine for most general-purpose buildings . However, restaurants, chemical plants, and factories using high heat will most likely benefit from PVCs resistance qualities as opposed to TPO roofing.
  • Your budget.TPO is considerably more affordable than PVC, so if you have a limited construction budget, TPO may be the way to go.

What Is A Pvc Roof

PVC stands for Polyvinyl Chloride, and this material is used to create a single ply thermoplastic roofing membrane.

As you can see from the diagram above, a PVC roofing system is made up of a couple of layers of materials that make this roof durable, flexible and water-tight. PVC material itself contains numerous plastecizers and stabilizers that give this roof its unique properties and longevity. Ultimately, the quality of the chemical composition determines how well a particular PVC roofing product will perform.

The most notable feature of a thermoplastic membrane is that it can become pliable and soft when heated and then hard again when it cools. Because of this, PVC membranes are heat welded together at the seams, and dont allow any moisture to come through.

Highly Waterproof Membrane Systems

How To Install A PVC Roof

PVC membranes constitute a protection system independent of the integrity of the rest of the roof. That is why leaks or cracks will not affect its performance. This material is excellent for waterproofing low slope roofs. Hence, it is widely used in the construction and reinforcement of commercial and business roofs.

Are You Interested In Learning The Difference Between Tpo And Pvc

Because TPO roofs and PVC roofs appear to be similar, it is important to review the differences in these two single-ply roofing solutions. TPO membranes are different because they are made up of an ethylene or polyethylene thermoplastic bound to ethylene propylene rubber. The composition of PVC roofs is different. First, vinyl chloride monomers are polymerized, and then plasticizers are added to increase resilience. Both of these roof systems look quite similar, which is why its not unusual for TPO and PVC to be confused with one another.

Modified Bitumen: Quick Facts And Cost Installed

  • Modified Bitumen, an asphalt-based multi-ply flat roofing system, is considered a modern take on its close cousin, BUR or built-up roof.
  • Modified bitumen is installed in multiple layers , each of which is torched to the surface below at every ¼ turn of the roll. This is a very labor intensive process that absolutely must be performed by a professional.
  • This type of roof does have cold-rolled technologies available now as well, but it involves a lot of application of roofing tar.
  • Estimated costs are $7.50 to $12.50 per square foot installed, depending on the project and location.

Tpo Roofing Membrane: Quick Facts And Cost Installed

  • TPO, short for thermoplastic polyolefin, is a single-ply thermoplastic roofing membrane that offers good overall performance and great energy efficiency for the money.
  • TPO membranes are a newer product that made their initial appearance in 1990s but were plagued by performance issues. Since then, TPO roofs have undergone reformulation and seem to be performing quite well over the last decade or so.
  • Similar to PVC, TPO membranes are hot air welded, but the two systems have different chemical composition and hence cannot be combined.
  • TPO membrane chemically bonds rubber, ethylene, and propylene, as well as numerous filler materials. In that sense, its somewhat closer to EPDM rubber than PVC, although, unlike EPDM, TPO membranes seams are hot-air welded .
  • Similar to PVC, insulation boards are first fastened to the roof substrate. TPO also comes in rolls like PVC and can be mechanically fastened to the insulation boards or installed with the self-adhesive .
  • Costs are approximately $8.50 to $14.50 per square foot installed, which slightly lower than PVC. Overall, project costs can range widely, depending on the contractor giving you a quote, projects complexity, and your propertys location.

What is PVC roofing?

PVC Roofing Membrane is an engineered, thermoplastic, reinforced roofing system for low slope applications. PVC is heat welded at the seams creating a watertight roofing system that can withstand extreme weather, temperature and most environmental pollutants. Because PVC is reinforced using a woven fiberglass backing, called the scrim, it is puncture-resistant, flexible and resists tearing, making it perfect for residential roofs.

How is PVC roofing installed?

PVC comes in rolls that are installed in straight lines along the roof. Valentine Roofing mechanically fastens the PVC membrane to the roof then heat welds the seams together using hot air. This method of PVC roof installation creates a sleek appearance on any home. Once the seams have been welded the membrane is watertight and provides excellent protection against the Northwest weather conditions.

I heard PVC roofs cause condensation.

Isnt PVC just for commercial buildings?

PVC has become synonymous with commercial roofing because it is a durable material for a flat roof that requires very little maintenance. PVC is exceptionally flexible and easy to install requiring minimal labor resulting in quick installation. Because PVC is UV reflective it often helps reduce heating and cooling costs, which can be exorbitant for large commercial buildings. Consequently, all these benefits are the very same reasons that PVC roofing is the PERFECT solution for low slope residential roofing as well!

The Pros And Cons Of Epdm Tpo & Pvc Roofing Membranes

First off, lets define what a single ply membrane roof is and where it is used. Single ply membrane roofs are sheets of rubber or other synthetics that can be ballasted or chemically adhered to insulation to create a layer of protection for your commercial facility. Single ply membrane roofs are used on flat or near flat roofs, typically on commercial buildings.

There are 3 main types of single ply membrane roofs. They are EPDM, TPO and PVC. Each material has its own sets of pros and cons. To make an informed decision, we will go over the traits that each material possesses and the weaknesses that you will want to know about.

EPDM

EPDM, commonly known as a rubber roof, stands for ethylene propylene diene monomer and gets its name from the chemicals that are mixed in various proportions to form it. It is most used on low-sloped or flat roofs, typically on commercial buildings. However, it is also used on residential structures such as car ports and patio roofs.

EPDM is manufactured in large sheets or rolls it is quick and easy to install. This is one of the advantages of EDPM roofing, the reduced installation cost. At approximately $0.80/square foot, EPDM is one of the most inexpensive roofing materials around.

What Is Pvc Roofing

If you are thinking about replacing your low slope roof PVC is a great option to consider.

PVC stands for Polyvinyl Chloride and is made up of ethylene and chlorine which are derived from processed petroleum or natural gas and salt respectively.

It may be installed mechanically with special screws and plates or fully adhered with a bonding adhesive like a FleeceBack roof system.

Similar to TPO, PVCs seams are heat welded together using a heat welder .

How Is A Pvc Roof Installed

PVC roofing is installed one of two ways: glued or welded. In each method, attaching the plastic sheets to the insulation board helps prevent uplift. 1. Glued: A lesser used method is to glue the plastic sheets together. The edge of each plastic sheet are attached to a ridged insulation board using glue. 2. Welded: The most common method of installing PVC roofing is whats called hot air welding. This is where the edge of each 6 to 18 wide sheet is secured through ridged insulation onto a structural deck, and the next sheet roll is laid down over the fasteners. The overlapping sheets are then heat-welded with hot air to create a one continuous sheet membrane. Welding with hot air creates a permanent bond between the PVC roofing sheets, essentially creating one large roofing membrane for your building which can be walked on. The sheets can often be re-welded, with the exception of CSPE . PVC roofing works well on both large buildings, such as big box stores, and small roofs since its easy to weld with hot air.
