How To Install Satellite Dish On Rv Roof

Mounted Antennas Vs Portable Antennas

Installing Dish TailGater on RV roof.

There are two basic types of satellite TV antennas for RVs: roof-mounted antennas and portable TV antennas.

If you opt for a portable satellite TV antenna, youll need to set your equipment up on a tripod each time you make camp. Portable antennas can take an hour or more to set up and get working, which can be frustrating depending on where you are. Youll need to set up the tripod, level it, attach the antenna, and then manually adjust it to the right angle to get a signal .

Since the antenna will be left outside day and night, youll also need to secure the antenna to your RV with a long chain and a padlock to prevent theft. Portable antennas are great for people who want satellite TV in several different vehicles, such as a truck for tailgating parties and a fifth wheel when theyre going camping with the family.

A roof-mounted satellite TV antenna is a lot more convenient than a portable antenna since you dont have to set it up each time you camp. A mounted antenna doesnt require any storage space in the RV, and its much less likely to be stolen. However, you may experience signal loss with a roof-mounted antenna when you park under tall trees. Thats something to think about if you camp in heavily forested areas a lot . Also, having your satellite TV dish mounted adds another expense, which can be a hindrance to folks who are trying to keep costs low.

And Finally Theres The Cost Of An Rv Satellite Tv System

To install the required hardware onto the roof of your RV is no easy task, and as we said, really a professional should do it. This is definitely an investment and is not inexpensive.

Granted, you can keep your dish in a storage spot on your RV and haul it out and set it up on the ground. If you have lots of storage for that dish, then I suppose that may be a way to go.

Also, if you want local channels its an extra cost and you have to call to set that up.

With the equipment costs, the monthly fee, and the hassle of getting it to work, weve decided it just isnt worth it for us.

When we sold our RV for a new one, we left the RV satellite system with it for the new owners.

On the rare occasions when we want to watch satellite, most times we can find an over-the-air signal that the built-in TV antenna we have on our RV can pick up. Or we can watch a movie on DVD.

Theres also Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime delivered over our cellular Internet connection. And if were in a campground, most have cable TV hookups.

So we really dont need satellite TV for our RV.

Since we got the new RV, weve had lots of questions about whether wed add satellite TV again.

Now you know why the answer is no.

I Installed The Cable How Do I Setup The Antenna For My Rv

This process also varies from TV to TV. Its also probably easiest done with the remote.

  • Touch menu or settings on your remote
  • The next step is most likely to go to settings or inputs
  • You should be able to select cable or antenna at this point
  • The TV will likely ask for a channel scan. Select channel scan
  • The TV will go through every available channel provided by your satellite. Youll also learn if your satellite is properly connected
  • Once this is complete, your setup is done. Check to see if it works
  • If Your Tv Is On A Mount

Some mounts do swing forward a bit to allow access to the backside. Try to first gently swing the TV forward to see if it does move.

Your next step would be to lift the TV off the wall mount and install the cable. This is likely a two person job unless you have some place to immediately set the TV down. Remove the tv and do the step from 2-4 above that applies to your HDMI or coaxial cable.

Can I Get A Satellite Tv Signal If Im Parked In A Forest

It depends on what satellite TV equipment youre using. The only downside to a roof-mounted antenna is that you might not get a strong signal when youre parked under heavy foliage. If youre using a portable antenna, you can place it away from trees and still enjoy the perks of parking in the shade.

    Connecting The Control Module

RV Dish Wally, VQ900 King Tailgater Pro Satellite Antenna & MB700 Roof Mount TV Install & Review

The Control Module is in one of those small boxes listed at the beginning. There are a few ports on the back, but only two you should care about: The six-port data plug and the power. Plug in the data cable, it has to go in correctly so line up the holes with the plugs, and push it in firmly. Next plug in the power cable, then at the other end of the power brick, plug it into power.

When you first turn on the control module, press and hold it for a few seconds. If you press it and release right away, it will turn on briefly, then shut off. When it turns on, it will start up the motor for the base up on the roof and begin searching for a signal. Thats all there is to it.

Now when you get to a campground, all you have to do is turn on the control module and it will automatically begin searching for a signal from a satellite. In our case, it never found one. This is not a slight against Winegard though as we are parked under several trees. If we were more out in the open, I have no doubt it would be able to find a signal.

Always remember to shut off the dish and make sure it has folded back down into position before you travel. You do not want to driving around with a dish sticking up as it will cause wind resistance could tear off, as well as increasing your height profile. Make sure you have a checklist and add satellite dish to the checklist.

What Satellite Tv Equipment Do You Need

Once you have selected which satellite provider you want to use for your RV, the next step is choosing your satellite equipment. If youre lucky enough to have a newer RV that came prepped for satellite service, you can skip this step.

To get a signal, youll need to have an outdoor satellite TV antenna and an indoor router and modem. Satellite TV antennas are small satellite dishes that give you access to your favorite satellite TV programmingand theyre designed to go with you on your RV adventures. Satellite TV antennas should not be confused with portable TV antennas .

If youre getting DISH, youll need to purchase the equipment up front. The advantage to this is that DISH offers a pay-as-you-go plan instead of requiring you to sign a 2-year contract. DIRECTV offers you the option of renting or buying your satellite TV equipment, but youll have a 2-year service contract either way. If you want to have your satellite dish permanently installed on the roof of your RV, youll need to pay for your equipment up front.

There are a few satellite dishes that work with both providerssuch as the KING One Pro Premium Satellite Antenna or the Winegard RoadTrip T4. But most satellite antennas work with just one satellite provider, so thats why its important to pick your provider first and then get your equipment.

King Vq4100 Quest Portable/roof Mount Rv Satellite Dish

Our second KING product is a model thats in the running for being the best tailgate satellite dish. This status comes from the KING VQ4100 Quest Portable/Roof Mount RV Satellite Dish ultra lightweight design.

But this area isnt the only one where this product excels. This device also has dual coaxial outputs, which is smart jargon for saying it can support two TVs. As you know, this aspect is something I value greatly.

Another feature I love about this model is its ability to act as either a portable or roof mounted satellite dish. This aspect gives it a little more versatility than some other models and provides the user with a choice about how they want to use it.

And if you choose to use as a portable model, you can also benefit from the 50 foot coax cable. This feature will give you a bit of flexibility about where you can position it and how far it can be away from your RV or camper.

Its an aspect thatll come in handy for deep forest campers who have a tough time getting a stable TV signal using roof mounted dishes. It also helps that this model comes with a fair price tag, which makes this whole process much easier to swallow.

In the end, this product is a lightweight, low cost option that many DirecTV users should consider heavily. It covers almost every base you could ask for in one of these devices with its features.

    What Is The Warranty

MAXVIEW 65CM CRANK UP SATELLITE DISH ROOF MOUNT MOTORHOME ...

The warranty will differ from product to product depending on the brand and model of the product youre buying. But the best options will feature some warranty and should offer some insurance against accidents or a faulty product.

Of course, the years will vary, but you can expect between one and five years at least with these products. Honestly, theres no reason why a company shouldnt offer a warranty given the number of things that can go wrong with one of these dishes.

King Vq4550 Tailgater Bundle Portable Satellite Tv Antenna

The KING VQ4550 Tailgater Bundle Portable Satellite TV Antenna is one of the more handy products on this list. You see, this model can be used either as a portable device or mounted on top of your roof.

In both situations, this device performs at a top tier rate thanks to its set of wonderful features. These features include a lightweight design, which makes the setup and install much easier than you might imagine.

For instance, this model can be easily moved wherever you might need it, such as during a tailgate or barbecue. This feature will come in handy when I go to my annual NFL game and need a useful satellite dish during my tailgating.

I also love that this product can support up to two receivers, which means multiple TV viewing. This aspect is crucial for me as I have two TVs onboard my RV, and I need a dish that can at least support both of them.

This model is automatic as well, which is another feature that makes it a great model. I mean, I want no business with adjusting these dishes myself. Honestly, it sounds like a recipe for disaster given my clumsiness.

You shouldnt overlook the 50 foot coax cable either. This feature will come in handy when the best location for your portable satellite is far away from where your camper or RV is parked.

This device is also usable with six different DISH receiver models, which makes an ideal fit for anybody who plans on using DISH. Plus, this product comes at a good price when you compare it to other dishes.
